Is Heavy Metal Satanic?

My son has started listening to heavy metal recently. I've listened to and read the lyrics to some of his favorite songs while he is at school, and they seem to be very satanic and anti-religion. For example the band Cannibal corpse seems obsessed with murder and the band Behemoth has an album called The Satanist. What are you're thoughts on this?

Yes it is. But I think often its treated as an artistic genre thing, rather then religious. It is anti religious with dark macabre sentiment. Rather than actual theistic satanism in a faith based sense. Or, its philosphically calculated, like "I am liberal, and so - apparently - is satan, so satan is the good guy." Also, I think the metal crowd want early revenge for being told they'll be sent to hell in the future, so they are messing with peoples minds - youre in hell now and satan is my lord, forget the after life, this one matters and metaphysical revenge (i.e my toying with your categioriesto my dark advantage rather than yours) ... "early karma" for you baby, revenge is sweet. Its a artistic exploraiton of the dark side in other words. A bit childish perhaps. Pensioners usually prefer opera maybe?

Yes it is.

No it's not.

While there are bands who have occult/satanic imagery in their lyrics, they're in the minority, and the entire genre shouldn't be written off just because of those bands.

As with any style of music, there are musicians who follow the wrong god. Mussorgsky was a brilliant Russian classical composer. He was also a satanist and his "Night on Bald Mountain" piece was about a satanic ritual.

Blues legend Robert Johnson supposedly sold his soul to the devil for fame and fortune at the "Crossroads."

There seems to be more groups and individuals into cultic beliefs in rock but there are also strong Believers in there as well.

I would say in general, yes.

And your justification for that statement? It's fine if you don't like a certain type of music, but condemning it without providing a good reason is a different matter.

It's the particular artists, not the genre. You can find artists in any style of music that are anti-God, either overtly on woven throughout the themes of their music. Are some metal artist more blatant? Probably, because they are typically appealing to teenage and young adult listeners who are ready to feel rebellious and counter-culture, etc.

You can't apply something like this to an entire genre of music. It more or less comes down to the individual bands themselves. I mean, you have a band like With Blood Comes Cleansing that was a christian deathcore band. There are ton of metal bands(or their respective sub-genre) that are christian in their beliefs and in their music.

There are Christian metal bands out there, so the problem is not with the style of music, but with the content.
Of course the anti metal crowd would have you believe those bands are actually satanists pretending (lying) to be christian.

And with the impact the lyrics make on the individual. For some of us, negative lyrics remind us of what we don't want. For others they point to a path that invites them to wander to something they may think they want because it is different or intriguing.

To me, Cannibal Corpse is not the best example to use to judge heavy metal. They are the most extreme example of the death metal sub-genre. The singing is growling and the lyrics are absolutely brutal, and the music is super fast. It's like a parody of metal. For real metal, look at Judas Priest. They are the best example of true metal. I prefer older bands like AC/DC, Deep Purple, Kiss, Led Zeppelin, etc. They are all loud and heavy, but the songs are much more enjoyable than Cannibal Corpse in my opinion.

Look into the music of Mortification. Steve Rowe has an amazing testimony and I bet your son will love their sound.
Scrolls of the Megilloth = classic. I'd start him on that album. He'd probably also like their self-titled.

What? It was based off of a Russian folktale regarding a witches sabbath and Czernobog on Kupala Night. Mussorgsky himself was Russian Orthodox, and is buried in a monastery in St. Petersburg.

That does not negate the fact he was a practicing satanist.
