A racist named Omar Thornton killed 8 white people in 2010. Yawn, right?
Simply not comparable. Omar Thornton got caught stealing from his employer and was brought in for termination. He then opened fire. He claimed racism but had never filed a complaint with the company or the union. No rantings on social media.

He a personal vendetta going. He told the dispatcher that he did not want to kill anyone else.

Maybe we could try to stay on topic? We have threads on the flag itself and recent black church burnings.

This one is about a particular flag being lowered at Fort Sumpter, where the Civil War began.

Except that it's not up to the victims of racism to let go and move on...
There's the problem.

I don't think it is the victims of racism that can't move on--it is some white people that can't move on.

Except that it is up to the victims. In recent years they have turned justified shooting after justified shooting into racial incidents ... and refused to let go even when the facts showed that there was no racial animosity involved at all.

As for flying the Confederate flag at Fort Sumter I have to wonder just why it was being flown there at all? Perhaps the Obama administration was trying to make a statement?

Its an historical site! Good grief! Are they trying to change history?
Well duh.

I mean........you racist!!

Other than atmosphere what does a flying flag prove? ]
um - history? Like kind of the whole point of that place?

Except that it's not up to the victims of racism to let go and move on...
Yeah, actually it is. Sadly, many people don't get it. THAT'S the problem.

PS and FYI: that's pretty irrelevant anyway, as precious few of those people are alive.

This isn't the 60s. Get over it.

Not until they have equality.
They've had it for quite some time now. Again: please join us in present day reality. You might start by looking towards the White House.

We did elect one black guy president, but most black people still have huge barriers to success compared to white people (partly because of inertia from past racism, and partly because subconscious racism is still extremely common and leads to massive discrimination). But hey, I only have study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study after study to back that up.

Some of those studies are fascinating; you should give them a look. It turns out, if you send out resumes that are otherwise identical, the ones with "white-sounding names" get 50% more respones than ones with “black-sounding names,” and white job-seekers who were just released from prison get more responses than blacks without criminal records.

Not only did you try to minimize these deaths, and dismiss the racism from this boy and his clear confession that it was racially motivated, but you finished off by being wrong about Omar Thornton.

A trifecta failure for you. Well done.

This.

Also, no one is trying to change history. The history is still there? History doesn't go anywhere. I'm not sure why people fight taking the flag down. If the nazi flag was being flown at the site of concentration camps there would be an uproar.

Ah the liberal propaganda machine, alive and well - surprise, most if not all of your studies are from colleges, who are notorious militant left-wingers these days. Gee no bias or agenda there

I also notice you conveniently ignore the long-standing nation-wide policy of "affirmative action" (which only "affirms" reverse discrimination in the name of quotas to prevent these alleged "huge barriers" you rant about)...but hey, enjoy that laughable self-righteous cocoon you've done such an impressive job of building up around yourself, clearly nothing can penetrate it. Dude, it's the 60s! No nukes! Impeach Nixon! Free love! You go girlfriend!

"Liberal propaganda machine"? Do you really think researchers would make propaganda on a massive scale (requiring truly massive effort and falsification of data) by writing academic studies that nobody reads -- knowing very well that most people will reject studies that don't agree with their prejudices? They must be really bad at propaganda. If they really wanted to convert people to liberalism, they would at least jazz up their writing styles; most people don't want to read ultra-formal writing filled with concepts they don't understand described with scholarly jargon they don't know.

Anyway, find one study that says blacks have equal opportunities--or even that they're not discriminated against. I bet you can't, because I searched and I couldn't find any. If you're right, there should be one: most academics are liberals, but not so many that an apolitical or conservative academic couldn't find some evidence for your view, if it had any. That's even if every liberal in academia is willing to constantly falsify data.

I also notice you conveniently ignore the long-standing nation-wide policy of "affirmative action" (which only "affirms" reverse discrimination in the name of quotas to prevent these alleged "huge barriers" you rant about)...

There's no way affirmative action makes up for discrimination against blacks. For one thing, blacks who graduated from elite universities get fewer call backs than whites from middling universities, and for lower-paying jobs. Even white high school dropouts are wealthier than blacks with college degrees. And it's not like discrimination is the only cause of unequal opportunity.

but hey, enjoy that laughable self-righteous cocoon you've done such an impressive job of building up around yourself, clearly nothing can penetrate it.

Yes, because you've clearly tried everything. If a bunch of fact-free grumbling about liberals won't change my mind, what will?

That doesn't seem to be a problem. The issue seems to be letting go ... and moving on.

Oh, so people of color, the descendants of slaves and the children/grandchildren/victims of Civil Rights era racist oppression are just supposed to let go and move on, but "proud Southerners" should be respected for bitterly clinging to a piece of cloth that represents sedition and a pointless loss of life and property? I see rednecks saying things like, "we'll never forget our heritage!", but they expect black people to just "get over" racism?

Yep, and look at how the racists came out of the woodwork after Obama was elected.

What exactly are you angry about?

Look at how any criticism of Obama is attributed to racism.
