Many premillennialists and dispensationalists visualize this picture or something similar (basically Jesus suspended in the skies):

The preterist relies on scripture to interpret scripture; this is how the preterist interpret "coming in the clouds" (we don't visualize or paint with mental pictures!) :

Clouds and darkness are round about him: righteousness and judgment are the habitation of his throne.

Psalm 97:2

I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him. And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed.

Daniel 7:13-14

The burden of Egypt.

Behold, the Lord rideth upon a swift cloud,
and shall come into Egypt:
and the idols of Egypt shall be moved at his presence,
and the heart of Egypt shall melt in the midst of it.

Isaiah 19:1
=
And the Egyptians will I give over into the hand of a cruel lord;
and a fierce king shall rule over them, saith the Lord, the Lord of hosts.

Isaiah 19:4

Acts 1:1-And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.

10 And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel;

11 Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven

Yeah, he left in the clouds, he comes back in the clouds (Psalm 97:2; Dan. 7:13-14; Matt. 26:64) in the spirit of judgment.

The clouds mentioned are not natural clouds but supernatural sight to the third heaven. After all the men of Galilee saw angels which defies natural day to day occurrences.

If you read acts of the apostles you will find the events are sequential records. Further down Saint Stephan a man if Galilee witnessed the Lord coming with the clouds of heaven whilst everyone else was oblivious to what he saw.
These clouds are not our earthly natural clouds but a projection into the supernatural heavenly realm.
It seems death (symbol of the thief) was the trigger that opened Saint Stephan eyes. Others could not see what he saw.
