FBI admits no major cases cracked with Patriot Act snooping powers | Washington Times

FBI agents can’t point to any major terrorism cases they’ve cracked thanks to the key snooping powers in the Patriot Act, the Justice Department’s inspector general said in a report Thursday that could complicate efforts to keep key parts of the law operating.

Inspector General Michael E. Horowitz said that between 2004 and 2009, the FBI tripled its use of bulk collection under Section 215 of the Patriot Act, which allows government agents to compel businesses to turn over records and documents, and increasingly scooped up records of Americans who had no ties to official terrorism investigations.

The FBI did finally come up with procedures to try to minimize the information it was gathering on nontargets, but it took far too long, Mr. Horowitz said in the 77-page report, which comes just as Congress is trying to decide whether to extend, rewrite or entirely nix Section 215.

Backers say the Patriot Act powers are critical and must be kept intact, particularly with the spread of the threat from terrorists. But opponents have doubted the efficacy of Section 215, particularly when it’s used to justify bulk data collection such as in the case of the National Security Agency’s phone metadata program, revealed in leaks from former government contractor Edward Snowden.
...
Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who is leading the fight to protect the NSA program, is counting on his opponents not being able to muster the 60 votes needed to pass the bill, leaving them with the choice of either extending Section 215 or seeing all of the powers expire — including those that would go after specific terrorist suspects. Mr. McConnell believes that, faced with that choice, enough of his colleagues will vote to extend all of the powers.

I notice that the new Attorney General didn't contradict Rand Paul's contention about this when interviewed for network TV. She chose her words so carefully as to seem to be disagreeing with him but couldn't bring herself to claim that any terrorist act had been stopped because of the current policy. BTW, Sen. Paul took a big leap up in my estimation because of this principled stand he took.

That is because the in spite of being warned they ignored the Boston bombers. The purpose under Obummer is not not look for Islamic terrorists which he denies exist. The intent under the current government is to keep track of Americans that support freedom and the constitution. It is evident that many in government are committed to ending American sovereignty and instead being part of a one world government. Patriots are the enemy of not only the current tyrant but also a large part of government and the public in general.
Jade Helm is another indication of that purpose. They are preparing for Marshall law. Not fighting terrorism. The scandal in the IRS proves this.

There is a problem when there is too much data. Data is meaningless without assessment. That's like going through the 30,000 garbage cans looking for something that might be evidence of a potential crime. It would be dumb luck to find something useful and would exhaust a great deal of time and resources. Now, if there were some actual probable cause to point to a small number of people, it would make sense to search those people's garbage cans.

Profiling ... what an interesting, and imminently logical, concept.

Those green cans are the ones you gotta watch out for. Probable cause requires something besides what color can you have.

But on the flip side, the government knows everything you have purchased with your debit card, every phone call you have made or received, what internet sites you visit, what you have downloaded and uploaded to the internet, what books you read at the library, where you get your gas and where you travel to, every time you have entered and left the US, what guns you have purchased, where you bank account money comes from and what you did in your bedroom last night.

So you see, we ARE safer.

That's analogous to buying a bookstore and claiming to possess all that vast knowledge. Owning the data and being able to do something with it are not the same.

Noting that El Al is one of the safest airlines flying, once one gets past the ticket counter. El Al's use of profiling has averted several attempted hijackings. If one gets past the ticket counter without violence then one's flight on El Al is likely to be uneventful.
