Im a KJV kind of person but am looking for something more accurate in translation. If anyone has a suggestion i would be grateful. Thank you.

Here is an example of what im referring to. This KJV scripture refers to "Easter" yet Passover is a more accurate translation.

Ac 12:4 And when he had apprehended him, he put him in prison, and delivered him to four quaternions of soldiers to keep him; intending after Easter to bring him forth to the people.

What is wrong with it? EASTER is the Christian (new testament) celebration for the risen saviour.?

Passover, could have been used here, but there is a reason the use of Easter is used, not Passover.

When I hear Passover, I think Jewish celebration. And it is a great thing to celebrate. But as a Christian, I celebrate EASTER now. My risen King.

Do you feel that the word is to PAGAN?

No, i just think Passover is more accurate, I'm not sure why Easter was even used in that scripture. But my only point is that im looking for opinions on a better version, maybe NKJV? Something else maybe?

Hi:) i quite like the New American Standard Bible. it is very accurate (apparently on of the most accurate) and i like how it reads. It also uses Passover in the verse u mentioned (most modern versions do). hope that helps!

Thank you, i'll see what others say too, maybe they will agree. NKJV corrected the word but if there is something better than even NKJV i would like to know. Thanks for the input.

One thing that comes to mind is why the KJV is so popular, supposedly the KJV used manuscripts which were taken from places in the world close to where the apostles actually taught, and while some other newer versions boast of using older manuscripts than the KJV used they are not necessarily better, the claim is that those older manuscripts were flawed and not as reliable as what KJV used. And none are actually original anyway, they all have been copied since they were originally penned, but supposedly some were changed on purpose. Maybe NKJV is better. I don't know

I was hung up on this for awhile. Then I used online bible.cc. It has multiple versions and links to the concordance and translations. I find that it is better to dig deep into a little scripture than to lightly glance over big chunks. In the end it is God that does the leading and will reveal Himself in the Word the more you trust that He is there to be revealed.

Yes that's true, i agree. And many things are reiterated throughout the bible anyway. And taking what we learn and comparing it to other scripture is important too, its useful in helping us understand.

The ESV is my preferred translation, haven't looked that much into the NASB, the NKJV has the added bonus of comparing the TR with the NA27 in the footnotes (I think there is another other language version in there as well but dunno)

I would definitely recommend either the NKJV or the ESV

if I were Protestant I would use the King James version for spiritual readings daily and the New International Bible for more scholarly research

this is how I am with Catholic translations of the Bible too, I use the Douay Rheims Bible (an old translation from around the same time as the King James translation) because I like the poetry of the language, it is very close to the King James version in a lot of ways, but I use the New American Bible for more in depth study

also, I like the King James version because for a while it was a Bible translation that english speaking people seemed to agree upon, it helped foster unity between the different denominations
you could visit a differant church and the Bible sounded the same.

there are some ultra-modern translations that I just can not stand, and you go to a church that uses it and it just sounds so different, like they are not even speaking the same language.
I understand the idea behind this, it is to make the Bible sound more "modern"
but... I am not sure that should be the goal... i dunno, i do not want to derail your thread lol

someone told me once
the best bible translation is the one that you will read

so as long as it is not some crazy translation (like the Book of Mormon), just go with the one that you like the best

Thanks Rhamiel.

Just as a note the NAB is far more formal equivalent than the NIV, the HCSB is probably about the same formal-dynamic equivalence as the NAB

This page may be of help:
Bible Versions and Types - Word for Word (Literal), Thought for Thought, and Paraphrase

The only reason why I wouldn't recommend the HCSB for someone in your position is that it's different in rhythm to the KJV, while most others such as the RSV, NRSV, ESV, NKJV do have that same rhythm, I would look up some favourite passages in the Bibles you are being recommended to see which one you prefer, just a bit more food for thought.

Just get a good concordance and use it as you read.
Blue Letter Bible - Home Page has a lot of versions, and the Strong's concordance of Hebrew and Greek.

Then, read, read, read. Compare, compare, compare.

I never was an NIV fan, i have seen it posted i think and it seems loosly translated and wreckless, if memory serves me. Im leaning toward NKJV and KJV both, im not sure what manuscripts ESV, RSv or other translations are based on to be honest, but that's why i started this thread, to get opinions
