. . .Every local authority in the country had to publish a "gender equality scheme" earlier this year to meet new anti-discrimination legislation

As a result hundreds of schools have adopted schemes that suggest boys should take up traditionally female pursuits - and vice versa . . .

Schools are encouraged to develop "open-minded attitudes" and promote positive role models for boys and girls.

They are also asked: "Does your school challenge gender stereotyping?" . . .

That's going to just tire them out, and make them hate P.E. all together.

When I was in elementary school, they had us do two activities in an hour schedule. We spent half an hour outside with a male-dominant activity (like kickball), and a half an hour inside with a female-dominant activity (like dance). Many of us had to take naps afterwards.

Just allow either side to play the sport they want too.

Dance does help with coordination, so boys would benefit from learning, girls can play "boys" games and
some prefer it.
Just don't descriminate, and punish those that would
torment either side for wanting to do their sport.

(Have no idea what "netball" is. I guess I must have been descriminated against when in school)

Netball stinks.
Netball is a non-contact sport similar to, and derived from, basketball. It is usually known as a women's sport
Girls get the ball, can't move until they pass it, then can't hold it for more then 3 sec. Doesn't sound very
athletic, and very restrictive.

Why even make girls play it?

When schools become the problem, community contact football leagues are a very good solution. There are a few brave souls of the gentler sex that dare to tread onto the field, but by and large, football separates the girls from the boys in a way that teaches us to appreciate the differences.

this is the good thing about Catholic High Schools too. There is nothing like the bruising pain of a football game to put the message of Christ into a broader perspective than catechism alone can teach.
How... painful.

That would explain BYU kicking UNLV's butts every year... :(

Thus keeping hundreds of otherwise useless public servants employed, chewing up millions in tax dollars and stealing money from more worthwhile causes. Political Correctness = more poverty.

So, what exactly is Voeglin saying here?

Voegling jumps on things that he can lable liberals with. In this case, he is saying that their are boy activities and there are girl activities. If a girl were to beat him during these boy activities, would that make him inferior to the boy standard?

Just asking, because I think that that is what he is implying.

In Jr. High School everyone had to take dancing, gymnastics, sewing and cooking.

Dancing was kind of lame as they taught us mostly old sixties dances, sewing was worse because I was no good at it (you'd be surprised how hard it is to make a shirt from scratch). However, I really enjoyed gymnastics and cooking...cooking so much that I took Food Studies as an option in High School and it remains the only practical course that I use on a daily basis from my High School years.

The girls had to take mechanical shop, electrical shop and rugby...have you ever played co-ed rugby??? ;)

So it wasn't all bad.

Try making a shirt with no pattern. Hard to find 13th century patterns.
Co-ed rugby? Sounds like a lot of torn shirts, and probably some tears. Is it required to wear a cup?
Otherwise tears from both genders.

But, for NEtball, I see no reason to force kids to play
a less strenuous game, just to be PC. How about we push girls to do more. Girls can play basketball.

I didn't realize that the goings-on at schools in the UK had such an impact on you :)

Stupidity isn't limited to the UK. There have been several instances of such things happening here, too.

Games such as dodgeball, king of the hill, and tag have been banned and in some places, recess is being done away with altogether.

Based on my reading of the article I don't think anybody is being forced to play anything and that the intent is to offer sports based on interest regardless of the gender of those that are interested.

The are offering traditionally gender offered sports to both genders. The article would seem to mention that schools are encouraged to offer basketball for girls in the same way they are encouraged to offer netball for boys.

"Do you encourage girls to participate in rugby, cricket, football and basketball and boys in netball, rounders, badminton and dance?"

I think just let kids be kids and let them play what they want to play. If there are boys who want to dance - then great for them. I don't think of dancing as gender specific anyways. And if girls want to play football or some other "boy" sport then let them.

More and more we are letting our kids be kids less and less...
