Juror says Texas Gov. Abbott's rush to pardon shooter a 'travesty'

Like, why pardon him? He is 100% guilty and a racist, awful person.

EDIT: I have removed the transcript between Perry and an acquaintance that pretty clearly shows his intent. A very naughty word was missed but thanks ThatRobGuy for pointing it out!!!

There is absolutely 0 reason to pardon him.

But in case the racism isn't quite clear enough, we have this little comparison.

And please, if you are going to argue that 70 years for spitting on a cop is reasonable, just don't.

The video of him murdering someone?

First of all, he didn't murder anyone. At least from what I can tell from the video. He shot someone who was pointing a gun at him. What I can't tell for certain from the video is if he meant to hit anyone with his car or if he was simply trying to get through the intersection.

The jury disagrees with you

1) That is SOOOOO weird. I always hear from the right "innocent until proven guilty in a court of law". Well, we have that. And now you still say he didn't murder anyone.
The jurors, WHO ARE PRIVY TO MORE EVIDENCE THAN YOU, rejected the "self defence" line.

Do racists just get carte blanche to kill people now? Even when convicted in a court of law, folks ignorant of what was presented in court are STILL willing to absolve a racist killer of all wrong doing.

2) His victim was not a threat. Every damn day in the USA some nutjob walks into a Dunkin Donuts strapped like he's taking Vimy Ridge on his own. If someone just walked up to that guy and shot that dude in the head BEFORE he had a chance to level and aim a weapon at anyone, that would be murder. I don't see how this would be different.
Because I can't help but think this is okay because it was a BLM protestor (and a peacful one at that) and for no other reason.

Not sure why some on the right are rallying around this guy as their poster boy for "good guy with a gun".

Clearly this a "looking for a reason" type of guy.

If the guy who had shot the armed robber at the Houston restaurant back in January had been given prison time for it, he would've been a better case to "virtue signal support for self-defense". However, he wasn't charged with anything...likely because he was minding his own business and wasn't blabbing about how he was going to drive to a place where he knew they may be trouble, and didn't convey any "macho talk" about having an itchy trigger finger.

This guy shouldn't get pardoned, it'd be a slap in the face of justice, and to the millions of gun owners who actually do try to make a case for responsible gun ownership. People like this guy make the rest of us look bad.

Gov. Greg Abbott vowed to pardon Army Sgt. Daniel Perry before unsealed documents revealed racist, threatening messages

Texas man who killed BLM protester sentenced to 25 years in prison

After the governor took to Twitter to promise a pardon, unsealed court documents revealed that Perry regularly shared racist memes and threatening content in private messages and social media posts, including descriptions of killing protesters and minorities. Abbott hasn’t commented on the documents. From the beginning, he has rebuked local prosecutors for bringing charges against Perry, alleging that the case was politically motivated.

“The issue for the governor is he has painted himself into a corner,” Rottinghaus said. “There has always been a perception among the far right that he’s not committed to the cause. Backing down now may hurt his image.”
The board will probably wait until all appeals are exhausted before making a recommendation, sparing Abbott from having to make an immediate decision. The governor appointed all those who serve on the board.

Eh, who hasn't posted racist, threatening messages and killed someone doing nothing wrong?

Texas Gov. Abbott issues full pardon for Army sergeant who killed BLM protester

Daniel Perry was convicted last month [I think the crack journalists at FOX are off by a year] in the 2020 shooting of a BLM protester who was legally carrying an AK-47 rifle

"Texas has one of the strongest ‘Stand Your Ground’ laws of self-defense that cannot be nullified by a jury or a progressive District Attorney. I thank the Board for its thorough investigation, and I approve their pardon recommendation."

Perry was convicted of murder last month in the 2020 shooting death of 28-year-old Garrett Foster, who was legally carrying an AK-47 rifle through downtown Austin during a summer of nationwide riots.

Prosecutors argued Perry could have driven away without opening fire and witnesses testified that they never saw Foster raise his gun.

I would need to review some more of the details, but it sounds like this wasn't exclusively an "Abbot decision".

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott on Thursday pardoned Daniel Perry, an Army sergeant sentenced to 25 years in prison for shooting and killing a protester in 2020. The Republican governor issued his pardon after a unanimous recommendation by the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles.

The Board also unanimously voted to recommend a full restoration of Perry's firearm rights.

If you go to the board members list here:

They have quite a bit of tenure and combined experience, so perhaps they're privy to some information that we don't have.

It wasn't just a room full of "stuffy old white guys letting him off the hook willy nilly"

One also has to keep in mind the backdrop, whether or not people like or dislike the stand your ground laws in Texas, the laws are what they are, and that's what they have to use when making their decisions.

No, it's a room full of people making $131,000 a year for a cake job, all appointed by Abbott, who came out immediately saying that he wanted to pardon Perry. Perry also became something of a cause celebre among the right.

I'm sure there was no political pressure at all to come to this conclusion.

One also has to keep in mind the backdrop, whether or not people like or dislike the stand your ground laws in Texas, the laws are what they are, and that's what they have to use when making their decisions.
The stand your ground laws are what got him convicted. Perry was the one who committed vehicular assault by running a red light and driving into the crowd, and as loose as they may be, the TX stand your ground law explicitly excludes people who "provoke[d] the person against whom the force was used.[url]"

In the interest of accuracy, the chair of the board was appointed in 2009; Abbott's first term as governor was in 2015. Abbott did name him the chair though.

Alright....I'll ask the stupid question.

What does racism have to do with this case?

The shooter is white, the victim is white.

Even assuming that the shooter is racist towards black people....what does it have to do with him shooting a white guy? A guy the left insists can never be a victim of racism.

I believe @rambot was pointing out the disparity between the two cases as racism - a white man is convicted of murder for shooting a protester, but the governor pardons him because he was "defending himself" (despite the fact that the jury rejected that argument). On the other hand, a black man spits on a cop and gets 70 years in prison "to send a message".

Perry's documented racism just serves to demonstrate his motives for instigating the confrontation that led to the shooting, as well as illustrating that he's hardly someone who should be considered a model member of society - I don't think anyone has claimed that Foster was a victim of racism (at least not directly).
