Sheryl Crow sparked bewilderment among her fans when she moved in with her adopted sons into her 50-acre Nashville property that contained a church, a house, a barn, and other structures. The cause of the bewilderment was Sheryl’s claims that she did not subscribe to just one religious group, and fans wondered why she built a church in her residence.
Sheryl Suzanne Crow, popularly known as Sheryl Crow is an American, songwriter, and singer born in February 1962. Sheryl was born to Bernice and Wendell Crow in Kennett, Missouri. She obtained a BS ED Degree in Music Education and was a part of the University of Missouri’s local band Cashmere, a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority and Sigma Alpha Iota international music fraternity.
Crow has been featured in television series like; Cop Rock, 30 Rock, Cougar Town, and One Tree Hill amongst others. She has released eleven studio albums, three live albums, and five compilations and has sold over 50 million copies. The actress and singer has won 9 Grammy awards out of 32 nominations and has been nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year.
Crow has been speculated to be a Christian and a lot are still confused about the actresses’ religious stance. This article will provide answers to satisfy your curiosity on this issue.
Is Sheryl Crow Religious?

Sheryl has been vocal on religious issues and has done some things few people consider religious acts. The actress mentioned that she was exposed to religion at a young age and that while growing up, she was surrounded by church-going and hardworking people.
In a 2005 interview with New York Post, the actress revealed that she embraces multiple religions. According to Crow:
“I believe in God. I believe in Jesus and Buddha and Mohammed and all those that were enlightened. I wouldn’t necessarily say that I’m a strict Christian. I’m not sure I believe in heaven.”
She told the Wall Street Journal that since her teen days, she had a kind of connection with something she felt was a higher power and that God might be female and not the male everyone thinks. The actress also revealed why she needed to have her church. In her words:
“Since I was 21, I’ve always had a strong relationship and an everyday, ongoing dialogue with a higher power. He or She seems to be most evident, which I guess is why I’m so environmentally driven to preserve what we have around here.”
In 2016, it was reported that she had acquired a church on her Nashville property. The actress explained that the church was to be used as a sacred space and a getaway from work.
“When I bought this property, I thought it would be nice to have a space that has nothing to do with work – just a quiet and sacred place to gather”
Sheryl attempted to buy an old Zion Church in rural Tennessee and even saw an old church being auctioned for $5000 on eBay. Both options didn’t work for the entertainer and she went ahead to build one in her Nashville home and equipped it with religious statues, figurines, paintings, and other collectibles.
Sheryl has also released a couple of religious-themed songs. Her songs “Letter to God” and “I shall believe” are perfect examples. Below are some lines from “I Shall Believe”
“Come to me now
And lay your hands over me
Even if it’s a lie
Say it will be alright
And I shall believe
I’m broken in two
And I know you’re on to me
That I only come home
When I’m so all alone
But I do believe”
Sheryl grew up in a somewhat religious home. Though some reports state that she does not subscribe to specific religious principles, the actress is mostly associated with Christianity.
Does Sheryl Crow believe in God?

Crow addresses herself as a Christian and believer. On various occasions, she has outrightly stated that she believes in God though her beliefs are a bit complex because the actress mentioned that she also believed in other supernatural beings.
An article by Celebs Haunt reported that Crow is meta-religious because she expressed beliefs in various spiritual beings. She said, “I believe in God. I believe in Jesus and Buddha and Mohammed and all those that were enlightened”
The actress has also taught her adopted kids to believe in God and uses her faith in God to describe the situation that brought them together as a family. She explains to the kids that though they were born differently, God has a hand in their union because he brought them together.
She told Christian Post in 2013, “The kids also believe, as do I, that God put us together. They know how blessed I am to get to be their mommy, So when they’re mad that I won’t let them play video games, I say, ‘God put me in charge. I’m raising you – all the best I can, and some decisions are not fun.”
Is Sheryl Crow a Christian?

Several pieces of evidence suggest that Sheryl Crow might be a Christian. However, the fact that she holds faith in other religions, that is directly conflicting with Christianity. The actress even owns a private church where she prays and meditates. CHVN 95.1 FM reported that the beams above the church’s window have an inscription “Gloria in Excelsis” meaning “Glory to God in the highest.” Sheryl describes her church as a “Sacred place” where people can gather and she uses the place to meditate and pray.
Crow associates herself with Christianity more than any other religion. She revealed that she was raised as a Presbyterian and grew up around churchgoers, hard-working and religious people. Even though she was raised as a Presbyterian, Sheryl Crow no longer conforms to specific religious principles.
Country music is deeply rooted in Christianity and as a country music artist, her songs are embedded with Christian themes and messages. An example is the “Promised Land” where she featured gospel artist, TobyMac. The song shows the artists asking God for the Promised Land as he promised Moses and the children of Israel in the Bible.
“Yeah, I’m wondеrin’
Still, I’m wonderin’
Where’s my promised land?
Well, I’ve run this Earth for many years
If there’s one thing I know
There’s nowhere on this side of Heaven
Where streets are made of gold
I’ve long laid down my grand illusions
Lookin’ toward the day that I’ll be home
I won’t give up on this race
Broken but I still have faith
That this old life is all part of a plan
And I can feel it in my soul
One day, I’ll stand before the throne
With nothin’ left but hope in these two hands”
Some of her songs address some Christian beliefs and strongly criticize Christian dogma. An example is a letter to God. Here are some lines from “Letter to God”
“……Well, I’m sending a letter to God
How will it be when I’m gone?
And what if everyone is wrong?
I took you in
Made a bed for you
In return, you gave me some
Words to go on
Told me I was saved
But you never said what from
A solid case
For the innocent
Could be made and laid to rest
They say, “It won’t do
If you aren’t like us
Then you’ve failed the final test
What do you feel
When you look to the East and the We
If this is real
Does it feel like some never-ending test?
A finance deal
If this is my one last chance to invest
I’ve one request
I’ll be sending a letter to God”
Is Sheryl Crow Baptized?

Sheryl Crow grew up in a Presbyterian home and considers herself a Christian. However, she does not subscribe to specific Christian principles. The actress holds different ideas about faith and not the traditional religious ideas she learned while growing up. A book by Gable “The Words and Music of Sheryl Crow” disclosed that Crow was born again at 17 years. This could mean that the actress got baptized around this time or had already been baptized. Since Crow has not made statements about being baptized and there is no public information on it. We can’t say if the actress is baptized or not.
What did Sheryl Crow say about Jesus?

As someone that holds Christian beliefs, Sheryl Crow acknowledges the birth, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. In the interview with New York Post where she revealed she believes in God, the singer also mentioned that she believes in Jesus Christ.
She has also made songs about Jesus Christ and an example is “Go tell it to the Mountains” where she sang about the birth of Jesus Christ. Below are some lines from the song:
“Go tell it on the mountain
Over the hills and everywhere
Go tell it on the mountain
Jesus Christ is born
The shepherds feared and trembled
When they look above the earth
Rang out the angel chorus
That hailed our Savior’s birth
Let me tell you now”
Conclusion
Sheryl Crow has made claims that she is a Christian and has done things that reflect Christianity, for instance owning a church where she meditates and prays. However, the singer does not believe in some Christian ideals and principles like the concept of “Heaven and Hell.” She clearly said, “I am not sure I believe in Heaven.” On the other hand, what makes someone a Christian is their faith, spirituality, and connection to God and not necessarily fulfilling the outward and materialistic requirements that somehow connect to the religion. From all we’ve discovered about Sheryl Crow, she might be a Christian, but we are going to give this rating a “no” for now.
Think we were wrong? Write your reasoning in the comments and prove us wrong!
Sheryl Crow evidently believes in the birth, death & resurrection of Jesus Christ. Whether or not she has received Jesus as her only Lord & Savior is not clear. But she believes in him, which is hopeful! Words from Jesus in JOHN 3:16: “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.” NIV
What I would say to Sheryl, to clear up any confusion is:
Jesus Christ is the Savior of the world that took our sins upon himself and by his grace, welcomes us to an eternal life with our Heavenly Father. Jesus alone is The Way, The Truth & The Life, and no one comes to God the Father but through him; JOHN 14:6. Our faith in Christ cleanses us from our sins and reconciles us to God the Father; ROMANS 5:8. Though other gods are worshiped & acknowledged by their cultures, they have not done, nor will they ever do what Jesus Christ has done for the world. Our Creator God exemplifies the greatest love for us by becoming flesh, taking all the world’s sin upon Himself, dying with all of it on the cross, and resurrecting to new life so we can be freed from ourselves and united to Him through faith in Christ alone, ultimately living an eternal life of peace in the presence of the only God & Savior that never dies. Other gods pass away and will never reign after this life. Jesus Christ will always reign as our Savior, Redeemer & Friend, forever. We even have access to his Holy Spirit that gives us wisdom & strength. Christ’s Spirit is always present with us through our faith in him and learning God’s Holy Word. You can trust what the Christian Bible says! Jesus Christ alone is worthy of our praise and he will never fail us.
P.S…God gifted you as a musician in such a beautiful way. Thank you for your music, and for giving praise to God through the “Promised Land” song! You & Toby Mac rock!🎵
