I learned in high school. I was already interested in learning, and would sometimes sneak into the piano rooms which belonged to the band, and I would sit at the pianos until someone kicked me out (I wasn't in band lol). I played football, and even though I was intelligent (I aced BC Calculus for example), no one would look at me and think, "piano". Well, this girl and I fell in love with each other ... storybook type of stuff. I mean, the stuff of legend type of falling in love. And when she saw me play the piano for the first time, the way she watched me and came and sat next to me, etc (I'll spare the details), let's just say I connected the piano in those moments to almost falling in love with it. And I became obsessed with it. And that girl I fell in love with, wrote a poem to me with Beethoven as the key figure in the poem, and I became obsessed with Beethoven as well. I would find any and every piano I could around the city: churches, hotels, wherever, and sit at them and play, teaching myself songs, teaching myself techniques, making up my own music. And I befriended a girl who was deaf, but who was a prodigy at the piano ... which only further caused me to be obsessed with the piano, Beethoven, and finding my own voice with it.</p><p></p><p>When we broke up, in the same way our relationship was the stuff of legend lol ... so was our break up. Like ripping two worlds in half. And that caused me to even more become obsessed with the piano, because it became my outlet and would help heal me. In fact, from high school, I would go on to the US Naval Academy ... and when we first got there, we weren't allowed to have but only a few personal items (like photographs of family, gf/bf, etc). Most of the guys would have a photo of a girlfriend, or their family. Well, I had a horror of a home life, and the girl I had been in love with, we had broken up shortly before I went to the Academy. So what did I have a picture of ? A picture of the piano I learned to play on from my high school. So while these other guys would sit and stare at pics of their gf ... I had a pic of a piano <img src="data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7" class="smilie smilie--sprite smilie--sprite1" alt=":)" title="Smile :)" loading="lazy" data-shortname=":)" /> It was a link to love, life, passion, and pain. And in my off time, as I could, there was this piano there at the Academy in this main Hall that I would sit at and play, and the tourists would come and listen to me play. And when we had leave, the other guys in my Company would bring their gf's to sit and listen to me play haha, which was a bad idea for them <img src="data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7" class="smilie smilie--sprite smilie--sprite1" alt=":)" title="Smile :)" loading="lazy" data-shortname=":)" /> And I was still very much brooding and caught up in my own Renaissance thing going on ... all very poetic, dynamic, and I loved it lol <img src="data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7" class="smilie smilie--sprite smilie--sprite1" alt=":)" title="Smile :)" loading="lazy" data-shortname=":)" /></p><p></p><p>It's one reason I don't publish vids, because it's still very personal to me. Every now and then I'll still sit down at a piano in public and play, but not as much as I used to. And the few times I'll make a vid for someone, is on request, and typically for someone I'm in a relationship with <img src="data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7" class="smilie smilie--sprite smilie--sprite1" alt=":)" title="Smile :)" loading="lazy" data-shortname=":)" /> I appreciate peeps who can perform in public, or show their passion in such a way that they don't mind who is watching them ... but I also appreciate the person who saves their genius, inspiration, or fire ... and shares them very specifically, so that when they do share it with someone, it's like a gift that is only for them and no one else. Also, my hands don't move as fast as they once did either, I've had surgery on my wrists. You can't tell from looking at them I've had surgery (unless I show the scars), but if I get moving too intensely, it's painful. I also prefer the guitar most days to piano. I need that spark in my world for the piano to come alive, and the last year that spark has become a fire, and not the romantic kind.
