When Trump and/or the most vehement MAGA adherents talks about news being a "hoax" or "fake", I believe they're not actually arguing these things aren't true. It's my opinion that they know these stories are true, or more than likely true. I think what they're expressing is that these things are intellectually difficult for them to acknowledge or to reconcile with their existing beliefs, or they dislike that they cast the leader of their movement in a negative light. Therefore they're not actually going to engage with reality as presented. Instead, they're going to argue the 'Party line' (in the 1984 sense) and just lean fully into reality denial. ("The Party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command"). And so, cognitive dissonance kicks in. "I believe my side is right and proper and American and patriotic and Christian and upstanding and good. Therefore it wouldn't have done a thing that isn't right, proper, American, patriotic, Christian, upstanding or good. Therefore it can't be correct that my side has done this thing. This new information is from a biased source, or it's fake, or a hoax, or there's a conspiracy. After all, you can't trust the media/Democrats/intelligence officials/law enforcement/judicial system/juries/bureaucrats. They're not right, proper, American, patriotic, Christian, upstanding or good." Oh, I do. I read foreign press constantly. But, here's the rub - the foreign press are generally even more eager to poke holes in the statements of Trump and explore the parallel universe that MAGA operates within. And, they're better at demanding straight answers too: Take this ABC Four Corners interview with Sidney Powell: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-08-30/sarah-ferguson-interviews-sidney-powell/13520448 Or this Australian journalist (working for Axios, a US news outlet) when he interviewed Donald Trump: Or these Dutch journalists interviewing Pete Hoekstra (Trump's appointed Ambassador to the Netherlands): If you limit yourself to US news media with views that are beyond centre right, it's a roundly poor showing: Newsmax, OAN, Epoch Times, Washington Times, Breitbart. That's without getting into 'alternative' media like TheBlaze, Daily Wire, Gateway Pundit, Infowars, Natural News, Townhall and similar.
