A movie presenting an alternative to religion doesn't bother me. However, Maher's depiction of religious people as primitive loons who are all just out to con people out of money is insulting and brainless. Yes, science has explained how a lot of things work. Most religious people won't argue about the structure of a cell or how the seasons change or things of that nature. But there are plenty of holes in the scientific story, just as athiests will claim that religion has holes. The biggest hole on both sides is concrete proof of where it all began. Do we believe that this was all created by an all-powerful being that just somehow magically always existed? Or do we believe that there was this explosion outta nowhere from this matter that just somehow always existed? Neither one is entirely comprehendable to the human brain. Maher makes the mistake of thinking that if he can't understand it, it can't be true. It's the most pompus and arrogant assumption a human being can make. For us to think that we're the most intelligent beings to ever live, and thus must be able to understand God's Plan or else he can't exist, is downright stupid. The mere fact that we are smarter than horses proves that one being can be more intelligent than another. Who's to say that there isn't a God out there who is more intelligent than us? Who's to say that, if we DID possess his intelligence, we wouldn't be able to understand things like his eternal existence and the meaning of life? Bottom line, neither can be conclusively proven by the human brain, and therefore BOTH SIDES (yes, both Mr. Maher) rely on faith. I can understand Maher's anger and resentment toward extremists - I share in it. The problem is that our definitions are quite different. An extremist is someone who uses religion as justification to forcefully impose their will on others. Yet Maher says that anyone who is religious is an extremist: http://www.stltoday.com/stltoday/entertainment/stories.nsf/peopleinthenews/story/432AE813ABA461A8862574D000067BA4?OpenDocument Anyway, the movie will likely end up just like Expelled - largely ignored and gone from theaters within a month or two.
