Lots of possible natural disasters could do the trick.

Collision with a celestial object. I've heard that there are possible volcanic explosions that could do it. Disease. Global warming causing Famine. The article you posted.


The thing that bothers me is that people poo poo the possibility of each of the different things mankind is doing to destroy the environment, because each alone is unlikely. When you put the chances together, something major starts to get a lot more likely.
