Do you think murder is worse than stealing a cookie from the cookie jar? Is raping someone worse than cursing when you slam a hammer on your thumb? The Bible tells us that there should be a progression in the Christian's life toward greater and greater holiness. If I'm saved at twenty and struggle with the same sins when I'm fifty, there is something seriously wrong with my relationship with God. We are saved from the power of sin, the Bible says, and no longer ought to live as though we had no power to resist our sinful habits or defy temptation. Romans 6:6-7 6 knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin. 7 For he who has died has been freed from sin. Romans 6:11-14 11 Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord. 12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts. 13 And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God. 14 For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace. Romans 8:3-4 3 For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh, 4 that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. Romans 8:12-13 12 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors--not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. 13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. It is a modern belief that it is okay or normal for a Christian to be constantly failing and confessing, failing and confessing, failing and confessing. This is the way a spiritual babe carries on, not a mature follower of Christ. Just as a baby stumbles and falls while it is learning to stand and walk, but eventually is able not only to walk but run, so, too, the Christian "new-born" is in a continuum of growth that may begin with stumbling and falling but progresses away from this state to one of mature stability and strength. Peace. Peace.
