Why did God pick one people group to associate himself with in the old testament? Does the fact that he never gave any of the other nations a chance mean they all go to hell?

Are they the same? Is knowing rejection of God the equivilent of belief in another faith, (whether you were raised that way, or whether you decided that something made more sense than Christianity) will they be judged the same, or will simple non believers be given a little slack?

I am a conservative Christian, and one of my atheist/ex-Christian friends sent me this e-mail. I don't know how to respond, advice? "Now.. I'm not sure I want to be convinced that your beliefs are true, because if they are, (according to Hebrews 6:4-6) I'm eternally screwed and have no hope...
