Anyone else here over 65 (and don't mind sharing it :D)? Do you have any comments or thoughts on being an older Golden Eagle, being retired or anything else?

I have a thought, something I'm wrestling with abit ...
Lord willing, I will be 70 this year. But 70 sounds soooo old!!!
()

I don't 'feel like' a 70-year-old person ... I don't even know how to be a 70-year-old person! lol
(I actually subscribed to AARP magazine to hope to better understand this phase of life I find myself suddenly in!
Been watching informative senior videos on YouTube, too.)

For years, my late husband (10 years older than me) was very sickly. His sickness did make him look older.
(A couple times when we were out together, he was actually asked if I was his daughter?!?! For real!)

But now that he is gone (last year), it is like I suddenly realize that I, too, am old.
(And it must be true (???) that I am (lol!), because I notice now ...
how others treat me (nicely) like an old person in restaurants, stores, etc.)

Anyone else feel this way ... wrestled with these kinds of thoughts ... as they approached 70?

I've always heard that age is a state of mind. ;) And I guess that's true. We all approach it in our own way, both mentally and physically. I'm a few years from 70 yet, but I remember being excited about turning 65. It's one of the milestones I suppose. But I didn't feel any different! I don't feel like an 'oldie'. My body does sometimes, but not my heart and soul. Getting older is different for everyone. Some hate the thought and try to stay young, others embrace it. I like to think I've embraced it. :)

 ... I think embracing it is the way to go!

That's what I want to do ... once I get it figured out!

I think what's thrown me for a loop is that till recently I was a caregiver, and I watched two elderly loved ones (ages 96 and 78) die while caring for them. While they were around, I was kept very busy. I really didn't think much about things like my age, etc. I was very busy. And I realize now that I felt pretty young while being around them because I was noticeably younger and healthier than them. But since they've departed, somehow my identity has changed. It's like I suddenly aged, but apparently I was aging all the time and just didn't notice it! (Except that the physical aspects of caregiving were becoming more difficult for me.)

... maybe one key to aging well is to keep busy?

We're all going to get old(er). o_O I think it's much easier to accept that if we keep doing what we've been doing that's gotten us this far!

I fully understand about being a caregiver. My mother is 94. She's still on her own, lives in her own house, does daily activities, but I physically check on her twice a day and help with what she can't get done. My dad died at 81 of Lewy Body dementia. We both cared for him for a number of years. It does keep a person busy, but I think it also is a blessing to us. Things like that show us the strength of the human spirit. Yes, we're getting older. Yes, we'll run into problems along the way. But aging, while bringing along with it physical and often mental problems, is a gift from God. If we live our lives right, and to the fullest we're able, we're doing well.

Maybe not realizing you were aging was a gift, too!

I do think one way of coping with aging is to keep a good sense of humor about it!

I have my secrets, unintentionally though. Most I found do not want to hear any of it. They don't want negative news that they perceive it to be, though it is really positive things I have tried to share. I am old enough to post here, yet, see that profile picture I use? I really think of myself not so different, I identify with the image and I am really like it. I don't mean my hair is like that and not grayed. I mean otherwise I would be just like that, in the wooded environment like that too when I can be. But besides the things that may make me look aged, I am not doing things as if I was, I move well, maybe better than I have in the earlier times in my life. The way I eat is making a great difference for me that I am seeing.

You have a positive outlook! That makes for a better life. There is so much negativity in the world. We only need to look around us to see the various outcomes of that outlook that is shared by so many these days. Elders were once looked upon as wise. Proverbs 16:32 says "Gray hair is a crown of glory; it is gained in a righteous life."

What do you eat?

Admittedly I have yet had discouraging things through life. But my approach that I maintain is yet toward betterment and it includes learning and never stopping while there is still more to learn. And I do learn new things still. There is much more to my well-being than what I eat, but my choices there are really important to it. I wish I made changes for it much more early in my life, I should have learned the information, with which I would have, earlier. But such information was not easily found back then. After having stopped drinking a couple of decades ago, a couple of years later I stopped eating meat, having read information showing we are not healthier with having it, and having the needed nutrition in other ways. I wish then there had been more information than that, which I did find much later. But I had no good reason to keep on having meat if I could probably have better health without it, and after no longer drinking, I saw it was not hard to give up meat. I made things I like without it. But since I felt good about removing contribution to harming animals which had to be slaughtered, when I was online finding more communication about these things, I saw there were terrible issues from all animal agriculture, not just to animals also in the dairy and egg industries, but to there being greater demand on resources by far, taking more land and more water, more contribution to diminishing natural environments, leading to extinction of species, and with emissions being a great contribution to change of climate, I saw there was very great reason to no longer get myself things with any animal products. That was eleven years ago already. Over eight years ago I found the Forks Over Knives Plan, showing the really healthy way with this, involving avoidance of processed foods, and with this way helping to avoid many problems, including cancers, circulatory problems, diabetes type 2, high blood pressure, rheumatoid arthritis, and many other issues. Diet is very involved in these issues prevalent in our society particularly. This is information I wish I saw earlier. I found there are very enjoyable meals I like as much or more than anything that are healthier to have instead. I was changing late in life, but others changed later than me. I encourage any to be looking into their sire, the documentary for it, and the book to it which I found first.
