The US had warned of a possible terror attack taking place in Moscow earlier this month.

U.S. citizens in Moscow have been warned to avoid large gatherings Friday and Saturday because of heightened fears of a terrorist attack.

The U.S. Embassy in the Russian capital said it was "monitoring reports that extremists have imminent plans to target large gatherings in Moscow, to include concerts, and U.S. citizens should be advised to avoid large gatherings over the next 48 hours."

The embassy did not elaborate on who or what poses the apparent threat to the Russian capital, or what kind of attack may be imminent.

But Russia's FSB security service said Thursday that it had foiled a planned attack by an Afghan offshoot of the Islamic State terrorist group on a synagogue in the Kaluga region, southwest of Moscow.

Popular rock band was to play sold-out venue that can hold 9,500

A popular rock band was scheduled to play what appeared to be a sold-out show at the Moscow concert hall where there were reports of gunmen in combat fatigues opening fire.

The multilevel facility in Krasnogorsk has a maximum capacity of 9,527 people. Booking sites show the event was sold out.

Russian news agency RIA Novosti said on Telegram that the fire at the concert venue is getting stronger. Russia’s emergency officials are using two helicopters to dump water on it.

Andrei Vorobyov, Moscow's regional governor, said on Telegram that more than 70 ambulances have been dispatched to the scene of concert venue attack.

“Everything is being done at the scene to save people," he wrote in the Telegram message.

More than 60 people have been killed and more than 100 injured in an attack at a Moscow concert hall, Russian authorities say.

Russia's Investigative Committee said at least five gunmen burst into the Crocus City Hall and sprayed visitors with automatic gunfire, killing and injuring dozens and starting a massive blaze.

Russian news agency RIA reports that the gunmen are presumably still at large.

The death toll in the Moscow concert hall attack has risen to 133, Russia’s top state investigative agency said Saturday.

The update from the Investigative Committee comes as authorities are combing the charrred wreckage of the Crocus City Hall on Moscow’s western edge for more victims. Officials previously put the death toll from Friday’s raid at 115.

The attack also left many wounded.

Russian President Vladimir Putin told his nation in a televised address Saturday that 11 people had been detained in connection with Friday’s deadly attack on a popular Moscow concert venue, including the four gunmen who had opened fire, killing at least 133.

The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the Friday night attack, already one of the most deadly in modern Russian history, which left about 140,000 square feet of the venue in Krasnogorsk in flames according to Russia’s emergency services. A U.S. official, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive information, told The Washington Post that the United States had “no reason to doubt” the claim from the Islamic State.

The U.S. government issued a public advisory to Americans in Russia on March 7 that described the risk of a “planned terrorist attack in Moscow — potentially targeting large gatherings, to include concerts,” National Security Council spokeswoman Adrienne Watson said in a statement on Friday.

“The U.S. Government also shared this information with Russian authorities in accordance with its long-standing ‘duty to warn’ policy,” Watson said.

On Friday, Russian oligarch Konstantin Malofeev called for a nuclear strike.

“Let’s give the civilian population of Ukraine 48 hours to leave the cities and finally end this war with the victorious defeat of the enemy. Using all forces and means,” Malofeev wrote on Telegram.

The FSB public relations office said Saturday that the assailants were “intending to cross the border into Ukraine,” where they had contacts.

Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, has denied any responsibility for Friday’s attack, writing on social media that Ukraine “certainly has nothing to do with the shooting/explosions” and that “everything in this war will be decided only on the battlefield.”

Ukraine’s military intelligence agency [said Russia] would probably use the fallout to build support for their war in Ukraine and possibly to launch a second round of mobilization.

The options appear to be:
  • Islamic State - But they previously taken credit for attacks they had nothing to do with.
  • Anti-Putin Russians - But no obvious value in such an attack.
  • Ukraine - But at complete odds with any prior tactical or strategic actions.
  • False flag attack by Russian Security Forces - Which is straight out of their playbook.
  • A.N.Other - Chechens doing it for real this time?
Regardless of who is responsible we can be certain Putin will make maximum mileage out of this and use it to justify all kinds of actions.

Putin has just declared that the attack was perpetrated by Ukraine.

Ukraine’s military intelligence agency [said Russia] would probably use the fallout to build support for their war in Ukraine and possibly to launch a second round of mobilization.

From Putin's address to the nation Saturday:

“The criminals in cold blood, purposefully went to kill and shoot at point-blank range our citizens and our children, as the Nazis did who committed massacres in the occupied territories. They planned to stage a demonstrative execution, a bloody act of intimidation,” he said. “All perpetrators, organizers and sponsors of this crime will be fairly and unavoidably punished, whoever they are or whoever directs them.”

Obviously, he will use this attack to ramp up Russian rage toward Ukraine. The US warned Russia. Putin dimissed the warnings publicly. And perhaps he made sure the Russian security services would do nothing to stop it....for the pure propganda value of such an attack. He is certainly capable of such a crass decision.

“The U.S. Government also shared this information with Russian authorities in accordance with its long-standing ‘duty to warn’ policy,” Watson said.

Putin addressed the warnings a couple weeks later, criticizing the warning three days ago as "provocative."

Per TASS, the Russian president said on March 19 the aim of "the recent provocative statements of a number of official Western structures about the possibility of terrorist attacks in Russia" was harming Russian society.

"All this resembles outright blackmail and the intention to intimidate and destabilize our society," Putin said, according to state media reporting on his remarks.

Maybe we shouldn't have titled the memo "ISIS determined to strike in Moscow"

Given that other attacks on western countries are declared as false flags by the usual suspects on this forum, I therefore declare this a Putin false flag attack.

He ignored warnings and denied the attack could take place, lulling Russians into a false sense of security. Now he blames it on Ukraine. Obvious false flag.

Russian President Vladimir Putin dismissed warnings of a terrorist threat days before the deadliest attack in Moscow in more than two decades killed at least 60 people and wounded 145.

Meanwhile, Anatoly Antonov, the Russian ambassador to the United States, denied a statement from a U.S. State Department official Saturday that the U.S. shared information on a possible attack with Russian authorities in accordance with its longstanding "duty to warn" policy.

"Nothing was passed," Antonov told Russian state news agency TASS while answering a question about whether any information was handed over by the U.S. side before the terrorist act.

He added, "No concrete information, nothing was transferred to us."

A U.S. State Department official said Saturday that the U.S. government had shared information on a possible attack with Russian authorities in accordance with its longstanding "duty to warn" policy.

That's pretty rich, given that the US publicly told US citizens in Russia about the warning.

The Embassy is monitoring reports that extremists have imminent plans to target large gatherings in Moscow, to include concerts, and U.S. citizens should be advised to avoid large gatherings over the next 48 hours.

U.S. told Russia that Crocus City Hall was possible target of attack

More than two weeks before terrorists staged a bloody attack in the suburbs of Moscow, the U.S. government told Russian officials that Crocus City Hall, a popular concert venue, was a potential target, according to U.S. officials familiar with the matter.

The high degree of specificity conveyed in the warning underscores Washington’s confidence that the Islamic State was preparing an attack that threatened large numbers of civilians, and it directly contradicts Moscow’s claims that the U.S. warnings were too general to help preempt the assault.

The U.S. identification of the Crocus concert hall as a potential target — a fact that has not been previously reported — raises new questions about why Russian authorities failed to take stronger measures to protect the venue, where gunmen killed more than 140 people and set fire to the building.
