I'm fully aware of that psychological saying of if god talks back you are psychotic. But that is basically saying people like moses were just psychotic when they heard the lords voice. I also do admit that a lot of the people you see on the news who say god told me to shoot up a building or commit some other sin aren't hearing gods voice but are indeed psychotic. However what if you can ask god questions, he responds in your mind and the answers align with the bible hence you aren't psychotic? It's only when we don't know what the bible says and try to talk to god and listen and get responses that aren't biblical that people get in trouble.

Or for instance you ask jesus questions and get responses and google the answer and find out they are true? I'm not going to go into any detail with my experiences but I would just like to hear what other christians think. I'm expecting people to say that anyone who asks god a question and gets a response back is psychotic. Because this is what they are taught. But if you really believe the bible theres no reason why we couldn't communicate with the lord on the daily like they did in the bible.

We are indeed told to fellowship with the lord and that involves more than just prayer and us doing all the talking. Sometimes we gotta listen as well.

Uh... is this meant for atheist?

I mean cause most who claims/identifies as a Christian believe in a two way conversation method with god.

That method is called prayer. Prayer=communication with God and then through out the day or after what you said to god of course you listen out for God. Prayer isn't a one time event, you do it throughout the day as well which is why a Christian may speak to God in the morning and hear from him later at noon. He doesn't communicate with everyone the same way though, that's the mistake people tend to make. The way he communicates with others also depends on the walk of each individual too, someone just starting out may not have a good discernment ability to detect God.

IK some who have heard his voice, some (myself) he hits with scripture/ maybe a message from a preacher online/from my pastor. IK some through situations/things they do during the day, others through metaphors basically objects or things that relate to their thought I guess you can say.

I pray almost constantly. God 'answers' me, but usually not by an audible voice.

I get 'thoughts and impressions' that lead to ideas related to my problems or studies. More than not, they work out in accordance with Scripture and verifiable records of events and concepts.

This isn't as quick and clean as it might sound. Usually it's a process and takes a while, depending on the urgency of the matter. In God's view, of course.

Well I can say i'm enjoying these responses. Because i remember listening to a christian call in show on the radio and a guy said he heard gods voice and the pastor said god doesn't speak to people anymore. Now if the voice you hear from God is loud then its probably a hallucination but if its inline with normal thoughts and in line with scripture and not dangerous in any way then i think its legit. I also agree that its not something a new christian will be able to do very well. But once your foundation of who god is, is solid then i think you can communicate with god and get some pretty consistent solid responses. I didn't know this was possible till the last few years when I became serious about God. It's really humbling that the god who created the universe is willing to spend the time to talk to some random but then you realize he doesn't see you as a random sinner but as a legit son or daughter and once you have the right view of god and open your heart to him he enters your life and thought life and its a wonderful experience. I hope all christians experience god on the daily because it is my concern that the average christian is not having fellowship with the lord.

I have had times when I have had a dream about my future. I thought that was God telling me that this was His plan for me. Turns out this was not His plan at all. Sometimes he shows us what is going to happen if we do not get ourselves straightened out and on the right track with Him.

That pastor is half right, and in this case, all wrong.

He is correct in that God does not act through prophets any longer. The last of the "Old Testament" prophets was John the Baptizer. Jesus is often called 'prophet', but not quite as the OT prophets were.

There are no 'new' revelations of God's nature or plan to reveal. So, in that sense, and that sense ONLY, God no longer talks to people.

Does God comfort, lead, and counsel His followers? You betcha, Red Ryder! Probably not commonly in 'voices' (like Joan d'Arc or Son of Sam) but the comforting, direction and advice is still there.

We do not have prophets we have the gift of prophecy just like pastor is a gift. In the OT the Holy Spirit came upon people, now we are baptised in or filled with the Holy Spirit. There are gifts and fruits of the Spirit that are manifest in us. Gifts of Wisdom. Knowledge. Faith. Healings. Miracles. Prophecy. "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control." love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control.

Correct. Acts 21:9 mentions some with the gift and 1st Corinthians 14:1 has Paul encouraging Christians to pray for the gift of prophecy.

This seems to be different from the Old Testament concept. No "new" teaching or revelation comes from God since the time of Jesus. As an example, in Acts 11:28 Agabus prophesied a severe famine - which happened.

So God doesn't 'speak' to us in the "old" sense. But God does speak to us in 'communication'. Which is where the aforementioned pastor was confused.

Nothing in the Bible adds to what God gave to Moses. God gave Moses all of His plan of salvation. ONLY we get a better understanding. Moses may give us three Hebrew words and later on there maybe three pages to better explain what Moses was talking about. Of course a lot of Hebrew words would take a whole book to explain their meaning. Everything that God does in the Church today is a shadow and a type of what God did in Israel. Or whatever term it is you use for the Hebrew people, the descendants of Abraham and Sarah. The work God began in the Garden of Eden He always intended to spread from there to the rest of the Earth. Now we look forward to a new Heaven and a New Earth where everything will be renewed and made new. Everything was good in the beginning and God is doing a work to restore the Earth so everything will once again be good.

You seem to be talking about different things. God sometimes wants to say something to someone through another person. Sometimes he wants to give a message to a group of people. He does these through the gift of prophesy—which he many not ever do again through that person. The NT prophetic gift is often thought of as a pattern of how God is choosing to use a person repeatedly.

OT prophets did more than speak God's words for Scripture. God does not modify or add to (or subtract from) the Bible by any method. But OT prophets also gave God's words to individuals (like an NT prophet, although there are differences). OT prophets were God's voice, which is different than just speaking words from God. They were stand-ins for God, and God sometimes testified to that by associating miracles with them. (And, if a prophet proclaimed something that wasn't from God, he was to be executed.) But today, there is no need for people to stand-in for God since we all have access through Jesus Christ. So that is one of the senses in which there are no longer OT prophets.

@ImAllLikeOkWaitWhat, I think the short answer is, you can control how much you speak to God, but you can't control how much he speaks to you. He chooses to speak words clearly to some people daily, but it is more common that he will move our spirits or hearts to give us a sense of his will or as an answer to a question.

Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. (Romans 12:2, 1984 NIV)

It is convenient to interpret this verse as simply, when you know the Bible, you will know God's will, but that is not what it says. It is better to interpret it as, through thankfulness and submission to God, our minds will be transformed into Christ's mind, and as a result we will come to know what pleases the Lord. In this passage, knowing what pleases the Lord is not exclusive to deductions from Scripture. It may include when someone needs to know God's will for some decision they must make in their own lives (whose situation is not covered or clear in Scripture). It is what can happen when we have a mind more like Jesus'.

God loves you and is in you and with you, but we are to learn to live by faith. I think he speaks more to people who have learned to live by faith, such that God speaking to them doesn't really increase their faith as much as strengthen, encourage, or comfort them. (1 Corinthians 14:3) As with all things, keep your eyes fixed on Jesus (rather than what you hear or don't hear from him) so your faith will grow (Hebrews 12:2) and then you will hear from him more.

I would not call it audible speech but I have had some instances when God distinctly communicated with me.
I was in a restaurant once. I ordered something, can't remember what. When the waitress brought my order I bowed my head and gave thanks, the waitress walked up and asked me if there was something wrong with the food. I said no, she walked away. I immediately thought this was a good opportunity to witness so I said a quick prayer for God to give me another chance. A moment later the waitress walked up again and asked "Are you sure there's nothing wrong with your food." So I said "No there is nothing wrong. I am a Christian and I was thanking God for the food that He provided."

Hi, well this is news to me! Do you have some information that verifies this - is there an official belief in medical communities that having a personal relationship with God is classified as being psychotic? I will need to be aware of that!

Take a look at this material that I am distributing: Adonai Reigns : The Holy Spirit

I know that this explains some of the aspects of spirituality in a useful way for people, and have received feedback from it that it has freed up their faith where previously they were afraid to be open about it.

If God talks back to you it is believed to be some form of psychosis. Thats why they believe people like the apostle paul was bipolar. Also just forget the medical community and go up the average joe on the street and tell them you communicate with god every day and see what they say. They will think you are crazy.

Yes, we can only be effective to witness of Him when operating in the power of The Holy Spirit.

In short, the nature of the hallucinations of Jesus, as they are described in the orthodox Gospels, permits us to conclude that the founder of the Christian religion was afflicted with religious paranoia." (Charles Binet-Sanglé, La Folie de Jésus, The Madness of Jesus, 1910, p 393)
  1. "Everything that we know about him [Jesus] conforms so perfectly to the clinical picture of paranoia that it is hardly conceivable that people can even question the accuracy of the diagnosis."(American psychiatrist William Hirsch, Conclusions of a Psychiatrist, 1912, p 99)
  2. "Jesus Christ might simply have returned to his carpentry following the use of modern [psychiatric] treatments." (William Sargant, "The movement in psychiatry away from the philosophical," The Times (English), 22 August 1974, p 14)
  3. "For example, as we will show, a materialist readily believes-without any reliable evidence whatsoever-that great spiritual leaders suffer from temporal-lobe epilepsy rather than that they have spiritual experiences that inspire others as well as themselves." B. Psychiatry diagnoses apostle Paul had temporal-lobe epilepsy (TLE)

Even apostle Paul suffered from delusions because of temporal-lobe epilepsy (TLE). This is the basic view of most psychologists today.
  2. Mario Beauregard in his book, "The Spiritual Brain", p 57, says, "Sister St. John had temporal-lobe epilepsy (TLE), caused by a tiny tumor above her right ear. She was told that "temporal-lobe epilepsy sometimes caused changes in behavior and thinking even when the patient was not having seizures. These changes included hypergraphia (voluminous writing), an intensification but also a narrowing of emotional response, and an obsessive interest in religion and philosophy." (Mark Salzman, Lying Awake 2000 p. 120.) She was also informed that the apostle Paul and the foundress of her own religious order, Teresa of Avila, were "likely candidates" for temporal-lobe epilepsy. The tumor could easily be removed, at which point the visions would cease. So were the visions never more than a disease? Sister John saw that her whole life could be viewed, from a materialist perspective, as a mere pathology, a sort of mental disease: The ideal of continual prayer: hyperreligiosity. The choice to live as a celibate: hyposexuality. Control of the will through control of the body, achieved through regular fasting: anorexia. Keeping a detailed spiritual journal: hypergraphia." Hi thanks for providing this. Wow this is really sad! All of these medical professionals, when they write, they do not love God at all! Why? Who doesn't love God?!!

Do you know what the normal regard and application is for these views in medical institutions? Is it necessarily their first desire to rehabilitate people who claim to have a relationship with God, or do they accept that people can be considered healthy and to safely exist in the community while personally knowing Him?

I do certainly know of, and am deeply saddened by a large number of those who are misled in their spiritual experiences, to mistakenly worship antichrist, and so naturally because of the doctors' high exposure to cases of dangerous delusion, they might have formed by habit or momentum, a natural aversion toward us.

I suppose I should receive this as an idea too, for me to investigate whether some ministry toward people in those positions can help to educate them on ways of repentance, to authentic worship of Christ that they might be healed and freed to live prosperous lives to the glory of God!

I am very grateful thus, that you are sharing what you know :wave:

Well I just want to start off by saying that there are some christian psychiatrists out there. There was a christian psychiatrist that gave a lecture at my church. So I want to say that not all hold the view that talking to God and him talking back to you is psychotic. That said there are some in the psychiatric field and neuroscientific field who hold some pretty negative views about this. There is a good chance you will be prescribed some kind of antipsychotic if you tell a doctor something like God talks to me. They will assume its a hallucination. In general in society even among christians other christians will think you are crazy if you say that god talks to you. It is very controversial and if anyone doubts it go up to a random person and say "God talks to me" you will be labeled crazy. I think it must be hidden for that reason. Like speaking in tongues shouldn't be done in public because people will think you are crazy.
