Article in Commonweal that puts the spotlight on the overall tax burdens of people in various developed countries. Of them, the U.S has one of the lowest overall tax rates. Almost every other country has increased overall tax rates in the past few decades, but the U.S. has been stable. Obviously, taxes vary from place to place, but the U.S. has low payroll taxes and low sales taxes, and (surprise) a low average income tax rate.

If you think the income taxes you pay are high, do this simple test: take the dollar amount of the actual federal taxes you owed last year and divide that by your total income, before adjustments, credits, and deductions. You will have a number which is the percent of your gross income you actually paid in federal income taxes. You should be surprised at how low the actual percentage is.

Very important article that helps put the political debate over taxes in the United States in better perspective.

It would be good for our country to have as many voters as possible read this, absorb it, and take it into account when they listen to what candidates for political offices are saying and when they decide how they will vote in November not just for President (Although it is important to take it into account there as well), but also for US Senate and US House races, and for various state and local races. :)
