So long, but such a stressful and horrible two years. My family has gone through so much heartache. Not only do we have a son with autism, our daughter was just diagnosed bipolar. On a good note, my husband and I are in the process of healing our marriage, and our family. Once I let go and completely gave my life over to God (I had been struggling to let go!), the Lord has done miraculous things. One of which is making good from a bad situation. He is our attorney, he has laid our entire case out before us, we see it so clear; however this is the plight of the Christian parent who fears taking their children to secular hospitals or therapists.
The Christian parent who has a kid claim to be transgender is in constant fear of suicide, especially if the parents only bring their child to Christian counselors and psychiatrists. If she were truly transgender we would still love her 100%! However she was diagnosed bipolar and with Asperger's Disorder previously, and we were left out of her care plan, and I feared her being taken away from us, which they ended up doing because I was away from home.
I am pasting the basics of what happened, as they were written in our Notice of Intent to Commence Action against the Hospital. I don't want to deal with this, but everything is statutory in our state when it comes to malpractice suits. You give notice, they respond, you submit it to a panel to decide if you have a case, if you do you file. To make things more stressful and confusing, I am a 4th year psychology student at the University where this happened. I have lost faith in the school, and we feel we need to get our daughter out of this state soon. She is coming around and has told us some of what happened...I think she is deciding she isn't a boy...but we call her by her chosen name, as we want her to feel she can share with us, which she doesn't. I guess I'd like support and confirmation I am doing the right thing maybe? I feel God is leading us down this path, however I have so much doubt and anxiety.
The details:
1. During a phone day treatment LCSW (who was her psychotherapist), failed to inform my husband and I about our daughter’s severe anxiety, depression, and reported suicidal ideation. Medical doctor, psychiatrists, and several other day treatment staff were aware of my daughter’s written reports of suicidal ideation.
2. LCSW and Medical Doctor failed to obtain informed consent to admit our daughter into Adolescent in-patient treatment, and falsely claimed that our 14 year old daughter agreed, notating in progress notes/medical records that she was self-committed.
3. From August to the present time, our daughter's usual psychiatrist, the in-patient and Day Treatment teams at Hospital, including LCSW, Psychiatrist #1, Psychiatrist #2 nnd Director of Day Treatment, employees and contracted professionals failed to provide us with a written evaluation, diagnosis or clarification of a previous diagnosis.
4. In-patient and day treatment doctor’s, psychiatrists, therapists and staff, overseen by Day Treatment Director, failed to allow my husband and I to participate in and make decisions in regard to our daughter’s care plan.
5. Although I alone gave permission for staff to use our daughter’s name of choice; the entire treatment team referred to our daughter as a male by using only male pronouns such as “he”, “his”, and “him”, and refused to stop doing so even after our multiple vocal and written complaints and requests to stop.
6. Employees and or contracted professionals Psychiatrist #1, #2, and Usual Psychiatrist discontinued our daughter’s mood stabilizer and gave her SSRI or antidepressants without obtaining my husband’s or my informed consent. UNI employees and contracted professionals including LCSW were aware of the dangers of doing so.
7. Psychiatrist #1, #2 and Medical Doctor Dr., Usual Psychiatrist and the rest of Hospital staff discharged, or were aware of our daughter’s discharge from in-patient treatment without a proper psychological evaluation, and with the knowledge that our daughter had adverse reaction to SSRI’s and antidepressants in the past due to Bipolar Disorder. As such, our daughter climbed out of her window at night on three occasions, resulting in our having to file a missing person report.
We refused to bring our daughter back, she stayed under Usual Psychiatrist's care, however still no evaluation, and her ASD evaluation is not until mid-February. These "professionals" played my husband and I against each other and didn't allow us to participate in our child's care, yet we still trusted them. I feared them taking her away for us being intolerant. We aren't intolerant! Our child has Bipolar Disorder. She was finally diagnosed last week.
