They did not wrap it up. The Fox Network screwed over the entire series. First they showed the episodes so out of order that it was almost impossible to see the character development. Then they pre-empted it for various playoff games so that no one could find the series. combined this led to Fox killing off what was one of the great sci-fi programs of the last 20 years.

I am glad that we were able to get a movie as a closer to the series.

Yeah, we never did find out about Book's life before taking Holy Orders.

I didn't like the movie, I thought it was too out of charecter for the crew portrayed on the show to have a "save the universe" plot. They should have shown Mal and Co. acting in the wake of some square-jawed hero type pulling that off if anythig.

Although I suppose what they did with River (which I don't like) makes a battle like that inevitable.

Cowboys in space

Yeah, they went pretty over-board on that, down to Recontruction and many Western outlaws being Confederate veterans. It even had a (bad) analogy of Indians.

I saw the series on TV originally, but I didn't really appreciate it until I saw all the episodes in order on DVD. I liked parts of the movie, but sometimes the characters felt completely unnconnected to who they were in the series. The "fly through the field of Reavers" thing was perfect Mal, though; I think his characterization worked best.

I love it, have it all on DVD and watch it relatively frequently.

I don't think Reevers are a "Indian" analogy . . . . more a twist on the idea of Zombies as an element of Sci-fi.

If you are lucky, Browncoats may gather somewhere near you and host a viewing of the movie on Joss Whedon's birthday. Proceeds help a really great charity.

The first time I ever saw the series was in college, and so I didn't have the unfavorable experience of watching them on tv all out of order! So, because of that, I loved it. Also it was around finals, and we forced ourselves to only watch one or two episodes a night, and it gave us something to look forward to!

The movie, I thought, was a really bad way to sort of try to end the series. I don't know if I should put any spoilers in, but who they killed off really made me upset. It seemed unjustified and not needed. I don't know if they were trying to bring out more emotions, but I would have been much happier to know they all got out of their together and alive. Disappointing.

But I do so wish they could bring it back. I love to re-watch the lonely and only season!

I came to Firefly/Serenity through the movie. In trying to pick a movie to go to, I saw this movie called "Serenity" with Nathan Fillion (who I knew from the soap opera One Life To Live) in it. Loved the movie...found out it was a TV series...ordered the DVDs and got hooked.

What I think is really impressive is that even now the show has such a huge following. It really shows the impact of the show on the fans, both of when the show was on TV to those who became fans later on, like myself.

Most of the Firefly universe is built around a post-Civil War Reconstruction mentality. The "Battle of Serenity Valley" which started the storyline was a space reconstruction of the fall of Richmond.
The Reavers were loosely based on a Civil War group of guerillas called "Quantrill's Raiders".

I saw the movie, Serenity, first. Then much later, I found out it was based on the series Firefly, which I didn't even know existed. Found some old episodes on the internet. Now I love both the show and movie. Great theme song on the show, too.

Firefly is one of the greatest sci if series created...those who cancelled it should hang their heads in shame.

Looking at empty safe..."Great now I can give up my life of crime and retire"
"Brace yourself it's going to get rough"
"How rough?"
"Oh god oh god we're all gonna die"

I realize I reacted on this thread two years ago; I've slept since then. Without going into boring detail, I have since discovered that they were not based on Quantrill's Raiders, but on the way the Apaches were portrayed in old Westerns...with a bit of zombie thrown in.
The Reavers were madmen with no moral inhibitions whatsoever, extending to cannibalism. Mal shot one man in the movies who missed being rescued, knowing that being shot to death was far more merciful than leaving him for the Reavers.

Our daughter came home from collage with the series and it became a hit with all of us. Star Trek suffered the same crap. It was suppose to be a five year series but in the second year they pushed it out of prime time and then even later at night before canceling it in the third year. They thought it would die..... We hope Serenity goes the same way.

I came late to the Firefly series. After seeing it's demise bewailed on several other TV shows ie "Big Bang" and having several friends sing it's praises, I finally sat down and watch it. I have to say, I couldn't see what all the fuss was about.

Part of the problem was how they put that series on. As one who watched the series in order I never experienced the discontinuity those did when trying to watch it on TV. So this might explain why you did not see as much about that series or it may not be your style of show.

It may be that there have been so many other space shows since then that for me it didn't seem as original as perhaps it would have at the time.
