There are so many threads debating which day the Sabbath is to be observed, yet I find so little said about how one observes the Sabbath. I am interested in the specifics of your Sabbath observance -- what you do to differentiate your Sabbath from other days. I am specifically interested in practices other than corporate worship in the church of your choice. How else do you observe the Sabbath?

If this thread deteriorates to yet another "which day" discussion, I pray a Mod will be along to swiftly kill the thread. There are plenty of other places for that discussion.

How does the Bible say we are to keep Sabbath in texts like Ex 20:8-11, Lev 23:1-4 and Is 66:23??

And should we be honoring the Word of God on this subject? Or should we focus primarily on our own whims? preferences? customs?

Mark 7:6-13 says something about this subject.

I am quite familiar with what the Bible says. I am asking people what they do, not what they read about. Perhaps my original post was unclear. I was not asking what your church teaches, what the Bible says, or what one "should" do. I am asking people to talk about what they actually do...their individual practices, actions, or inactions.

What I actually do is follow the instruction given in Exodus 20:8-11, Leviticus 23:1-4 and Isaiah 66:23

Because I believe 2 Timothy 3:16 , 1 John 5:1-4 and Romans 3:31

I go to church, usually take a nap, go to small group Bible Study, and then spend the evening with my family, typically. In my years as a Christian, I admit that I have compromised my weekly day of rest on a handful of occasions, and generally I have regretted it. There is a reason that God wanted us to set aside one day per week for worship and rest. (And, I agree with the OP: if you want to debate what day of the week that should be, start your own thread or argue it in a more appropriate venue. Regardless of your view on when it should be, perhaps a good start for many people is just to start with the idea of Sabbath, which is what I presume this thread is about).

I confess as I am not as stringent as I would like. My grandparents kept a strict Sabbath. The day was devoted to rest, play, and Bible reading. They did not work on their Sabbath nor did they cause others to work. They would not patronize a restaurant nor would they go shopping. They were farmers. If it was planting season and their Sabbath was the last sunny day before seven days of rain, they would not enter the fields. The crops were just going to get in late that year, and perhaps crop yield and income would have to suffer. Their television remained off all day. If a big bowl game was on or it was the 7th game in the World Series, you would have to wait until the next day to know the outcome. Instead, there was conversation, laughter, board games, and yard games. Baking was work, and therefore forbidden. Making candy was fun, and therefore permissible. Mowing the lawn or doing laundry was unthinkable. I admire their discipline, and regret that I do not have as much of it, although I do try with varying degrees of success.

This thread will probably be moved to the Sabbath/Law area soon I predict upon which most folks will abandon it and it will become another war of Law vs Grace. Simply put Christians are nowhere required to obey the Sabbath command and not even Jews are required to worship on the Sabbath either so those promoting such as part of Christianity aren't in obedience of anyone but their own selves in their efforts of works based righteousness.

I must confess my Sundays are not like this. Technology and household chores do often take up a portion of the day, more than I'd like to admit.

Doesn't that verse verify that rules are based on principles, but that rules can end up violating principles when someone takes advantage of circumstances?

I hope not. I did not seek a "war of Law vs Grace" or a discussion of scripture or "shoulds." I merely thought it would be interesting to learn the manner in which different people observe a Sabbath or not. I knew it was a topic at risk for thread drift. If we allow that to happen, we have failed.

That is what that subforum was created for. To be honest discussing in Christian theology how people observe a Sabbath is promoting observance of the Sabbath itself because it creates a situation where people who aren't observing one now call themselves into question if they should perhaps observe one and end up thinking that they have to associate themselves with Sabbath Keeping groups and then be drawn into the idea that their salvation hinges upon keeping the Sabbath Day and joining groups that promote such who also believe in works based salvation.

For most people Sabbath ( or rather sunday) is no different then any other day. Besides the 1h or so they spend in church. After that they are completely indistinguishable from the rest of the world. We try to keep it much along the lines of your grandparents. . No work and getting together with like minded folk for bible study

Actually, not... to be really astute would be to notice that the words used were "foolish questions, contention and strife about the law"... notice that the adverbs used are in the negative or against the subject of the law... it is these foolish slanders against the law that would profit no one and were prideful. Careful you don't be found twisting straight testimony or the end result will be worse.
