About 15 years ago, my boss at work had something smeared on his forehead. I was about to point it out to him but out of the blue it suddenly came to me that it was Ash Wednesday! Phew!Interestingly the Orthodox do not impose ashes. The RCs use, or used to use, the ashes of palm fronds from Palm Sunday.

Repentance means to never do that again. If you do it again, you didn't truly repent.
