I was not suggesting people can't observe or not observe whatever holidays they chose to (or not to) observe, I was merely wanting to understand what it was about them that they felt was inappropriate. There are some on this forum (CF, in general, not SR-R) that are very vocal about the issue, and I wasn't looking for debate, just an understanding.

Do you celebrate Christmas?

Is it a cultural tradition or religious tradition?

Do you believe the Bible teaches that we should celebrate Christmas?

Christmas has gone wrong but our families still enjoy the fun. They want to keep having fun no matter how wrong it gets so Christmas is a movie day and eat out, alone.

Cheaper that way.
Guilt games are played in the fun.
Bigger the presents, the more you get loved.
You gotta give me a present cause I gave you one. Don't you love me????
That's not what I wanted, you don't care about me.

Besides all that I lost my job based of economys of Christmas.

Even though the johavahs witnesses might be cults, I think they got the holidays right.

If Christmas was never a biblical holy day Christ was never in Christmas to begin with. It all seems so silly....but, if you like being silly, you go for it! lol

Well I have this Christmas decision in a different manner than others, but no matter who you are, if you live in a western country, which I do, you find it is only polite to entertain the giving of gifts to co-workers and such.

This year, that particular entertainment will be doubly expected I suppose, from those who know I am a Christian now.

So I was thinking, on the day of my birth this year, about the day called Christmas and I came to some personal conclusions for what I will personally do.

In my tradition the birthday person has no chores on that day, and a nice meal, whatever the favorite meal is, and if there is enough money even a small gift.

But... on the day of Christs birth what would you really give to Christ - should he be in the gift receiving business? And I found the gifts to give to Christ, and also how to give to others - corny though it may be.

Plus, they are gifts to be giving all throughout the year, and "presented" on Christmas. What I decided is to do all manner of various Charity work, helping in soup kitchens, food pantries, and homeless shelters - then presenting that time, to various people as their Christmas gift.

Presenting the gifts like : I worked "however many hours" at "such and such shelter" in your name.". and really do it, and offer the work to/for Jesus in someone elses name.. rather than our own..

I think it works! So its what I will do I believe... I know that we have no control over whose account it gets accounted... but it IS for HIS birthday supposedly so I think it should be at least what He wants - and its just a way for me to combine my belief, with the traditions of others.

For me and my family, Christmas has been a day for the family, far flung as we're becoming, to get together, spend time with each other, enjoy some good food, and renew our bonds. We have de-emphasized the gift giving to a minimal level, not going for quantity, but quality.

We do honor Christ, in that we are nearly all Christians, but in keeping with a less secular and more reverent view and attitude. It's not about what we can give and get from each other, but rather about what Christ has done for us. We're just not big on the secular side of it all.

A few years ago I read "God and Charles Dickens" which outlined Dickens theology. In essence Dickens was a moralist. He could only affirm the very basic tenets of Victorian Anglicanism which, at the time, were founded upon liberal Romanticism, pietism and a moralistic Gospel. Few sermons mentioned the need to believe in Christ for salvation.

Several books I have read since then have given Dickens credit for essentially creating Christmas. As you can easily see from a cursory glance at Christmas it has all the marks of unbelieving Anglicanism. When we celebrate "Christ's Mass" as a "holy day" are we not encouraging unbelievers to accept this presentation of Christianity as true?

Just a few thoughts...

Old English Crīstesmæsse means “Christ’s Mass.”

As the London Baptist Confession clearly points out, the Mass is “the cause of manifold superstitions, yea, of gross idolatries.”

“Abstain from all appearance of evil.” (1Th 5:22)

I'm going to Walmart tonight. It's a little jaunt for me and the wife. I like the Xmas trees and stuff, I look forward to that.

Christmas is my fav non-biblical holy day! I get paid to have it off.

"The climate of Palestine is not so severe as the climate of this country [England]; but even there, though the heat of the day be considerable, the cold of the night, from December to February, is very piercing, and it was not the custom for the shepherds of Judea to watch their flocks in the open fields later than about the end of October" (Alexander Hislop, The Two Babylons, 1959, p. 91).

Should Christians celebrate Christmas?

"Got Questions" is pretty weak on reasons why some Christians do not celebrate Christmas as a Christian holy day. The biggest reason I hear from Protestants is simple, the Bible doesn't command it.

Yours in the Lord,

Well...it's happening again! And earlier than last year. I have friends on Facebook that have already posted pics of their Christmas Trees...

“WE HAVE NO superstitious regard for times and seasons. Certainly we do not believe in the present ecclesiastical arrangement called Christmas: first, because we do not believe in the mass at all, but abhor it, whether it be said or sung in Latin or in English; and, secondly, because we find no Scriptural warrant whatever for observing any day as the birthday of the Saviour; and, consequently, its observance is a superstition, because not of divine authority.” – Spurgeon

I try to avoid adopting a particular brand of tradition in any of my religious observances. That being said, I love xmas!

Although I personally do not follow the "Jesus is the reason.." crowd, I can understand their devotion.
In spite of its origin, Providence has afforded a prime occasion for all men to give special consideration to the incarnation of the Christ. This season is a mixed bag. God is blasphemed in the hearts of the formalists, but His people are blessed and honor Him greatly which observe in spirit and in truth.

I just don't get how someone will claim sola scriptura then borrow from a competing authority (Tradition) when it comes to practice.

Well - from a Romans 14:5-9 standpoint I get it.
