Just thought I'd pop in and see how things are going. :) It's been awhile since I was posting steady here. I see a few familiar names and a lot of new ones; hope everybody had a nice Thanksgiving and is looking forward to Advent and Christmas.

As for me, well, I moved about a year ago to a big house way back in the woods; the driveway is about 1/3 of a mile from the road, and we're surrounded by US National Forest on three sides....very quiet. :) I'm a bit further north and east than I was before, but still close to my old haunts. We found a parish we like; it's small, but Momma has made more friends than she ever did at our previous parish, which is a good thing.

My health has kind of taken a nose-dive over the last year; the degenerative disc disease in my back has gotten much worse, and for a while I was walking with a cane, but the VA fitted me up with a back brace that helps a lot; it takes enough of the pressure away to allow me walk without the cane and without too much pain as long as I don't overdo things. They have me on combinations of different painkillers, including some narcotics, but I only take the narcs when I'm in screaming, shrieking pain that can't be controlled any other way. The arthritis in my spine, shoulders, and neck is gradually getting worse as well, but I'm not exactly a spring chicken any more---what can I say? I'm still taking meds for PTSD, anxiety, and depression; and VA put me on Trazodone last spring because the nightmares I was having were getting out of hand; I'm sleeping somewhat better now, although I still have the dreams, but I don't usually remember then once I wake up now.

Other than that, not much going on; as a disabled veteran, I am retired, so I have a lot of time to read and work on little projects at home. Momma is mostly retired and runs a little business of her own, and the kid is doing very well at his new school; he's taller than I am now and is still writing books like mad. Hopefully someday he'll write a best-seller. :)

Anyway, I hope everybody is enjoying the late fall weather and I hope you're all happy and healthy; I will try to drop by more often.

Blessing to all,
---Wols.

Hi there! I don't think we've interacted before, but I've been on the forums for about seven years and in and out of OBOB for the past four. It's nice to meet you.

Nice to see you Wols! I was just thinking of you, as we had family from Cadillac and Grand Rapids over for Thanksgiving. I have a good friend who suffers from a degenerative disk condition, I've seen how hellish it can be. I hope your experience with the VA has been better than the ones I read about in the press. I'm happy to hear you like your new parish.

Very cool that you spawned a budding author! What kind of books does he hope to write?

Yes, it can be quite painful, but I don't need surgery (yet) thankfully; I had to go down to the VA Medical Center in Battle Creek and have an MRI run, and they decided the best course of treatment for now is painkillers and gentle movement exercises followed by hot baths in the Jacuzzi that came with our new house. :)

As for the VA, I really can't complain. I know a lot of guys have had bad experiences, but they have taken very good care of me; and if it hadn't been for the VA, there is no doubt in my mind whatsoever that I would be dead right now. The PTSD by late 2010 was getting really bad---enough to the point that I was lying awake for hours every night, staring down the barrel of a loaded .40 caliber automatic pistol, and literally wrestling with squeezing the trigger. I look back at how close I came---numerous times---and I literally blanch. I think the only thing that kept me from taking the plunge was that I hated the idea of what it would do to my family, and I was worried that God would judge me harshly if I did actually do the deed. But VA immediately put me on medication and got me into therapy at a VA hospital and then with a weekly therapy group with other vets at my local CBOC, and I am sure that's the only reason I am here talking to you today. :)

He writes sort of combination sci-fi/horror/thriller-type books; some of them are quite lengthy---he's always either writing his stories, thinking about them, or talking about them. I try to encourage him as much as I can, because if he can get to be a best-selling author, he can write his own ticket in life, and not have to sweat the rent the way his old man always had to. :)
