I’ve been out of work and had to find a job over 30 times in my life. Looking for a job always feels like the hardest job I’ve ever had.

And when a family is counting on you? Now the pressure’s on!

Let me tell you this: As a human being, you were meant to work. You were born with the ability do a job. You have spirit, a brain, and the will to make decisions.

Doesn’t matter what ANYBODY else has ever told you about yourself.

Every human being, every person gets to have these gifts at birth: A spirit of human energy, a brain that can plan and solve problems, and will power to make decisions. Are you now alive? That means when you were born, you had the spirit to take that first breath. You’d never breathed before. You’d never even been in the air before. And there was all that bright light, and noises, and pairs of eyes staring at you, and you were feeling cold for the first time. But by your spirit, you breathed and never stopped!

Now you need that spirit to do something very hard: Look for work. That means finding where the work is. Deciding what you can offer. Finding who to ask. Telling maybe a total stranger what you want to do for them or their company. Telling them what you want to get paid. Bargaining. But then the most fun question to ask: “When can I start?”

Let me tell you something about the world: There is always work available somewhere. Throughout all human history, everywhere where people live, there is work. Work is as much a part of human culture as breathing is a part of life. Work is the breathing of humanity. The world is meant to provide work for you, and you were meant to work in the world.

Legs. You have two legs to travel.[1] Getting work always requires travel. You have to go someplace to ask for a job. If there’s no nearby work, so what. There is work somewhere, and you must travel to where it is. The whole world is also set up for people to travel. Humanity has created this. Humanity is on your side, and wants you to get work. Humanity wants to work, and humanity has made a world where there is work for everyone, somewhere. And you were born with legs because you were meant to travel to work. Once, I had to travel to the other side of my country to get work. And once, I had to travel to the other side of the planet to get work; and in a country with a different language and religion and laws and customs from my home. And I got work there for over two years so I could provide for my family.

That brain we are born with is so smart! Every human is smart enough to do a new job never before done. Doesn’t matter what anyone has ever said to you: You are smart enough to do a new job. Doesn’t matter if you’re older, either. Humanity gets smarter when it gets older. And if you’re too old to do some kinds of hands-on work, then guess what? You’re now experienced enough, and smart enough, to lead younger people to do it, and for them to do a much better job than if they didn’t have you guiding them; you’ve already learned what’s best.

My friend! Everything is so set up for you to get work. You are made for it. Humanity has made the world for it. But there’s one thing that only you control. It’s the one thing no one else can do for you. It’s the one thing that is the most important thing to getting a job. But fortunately you were born with this one thing.

You can make decisions.

And you can make any decisions. Ever stop to think about that? You can make any kind of decision you want. No animal can do that. Animals can be pretty smart and solve some amazing problems. But only a human being can make any decision they want. This is YOUR GREATEST POWER. And what is the greatest decision a human being can make?

The greatest decision you can make; the most powerful thing you can ever do is this: To decide to commit. Commit means deciding never to un-decide something. When you decide to get work, you must also decide not to un-decide this. When you decide to get work, you also decide to keep trying till you get work, no matter what; no matter what bad things others tell you; no matter how many places say they don’t have work for you. Hold your decision to get work! Commit with all the will power and spirit that you were born with! Seek, knock, and ask! You will get work.

Everyone who has a job tried no matter what until they got that job. You can too. Billions and billions of people have gotten jobs. Each and every one tried and tried until they got work. That’s the way the world works. You are part of the world. It will work that way for you!

Other people often tell us bad things. Don’t listen. When someone says you can’t get work, then in your head tell yourself: “They are wrong! I will get work!!” Then, go talk to someone who is on your side and who will encourage you. Listen to them.[2] People will say bad things; don’t listen to them.

And we tell ourselves bad things. If your head tells you bad things, then think about the best person you have ever known. In your head, ask yourself what that person would say to you right now.

In the over 30 times I’ve had to look for work, sometimes I’ve talked to the best person I’ve ever known or I’ve remembered what that person said to me before. I also had an uncle who is long gone now. When he was young, he went to Germany to find work, and was thrown in jail by the evil Nazis because he would not fight for them. He got out, and decided to travel to a distant land. He didn’t speak the language, didn’t know anything about the place. But he had decided to get work and he never stopped deciding. He became a very rich man with a family and many friends. He gave me lots of advice. One thing he said always made me feel brave when looking for work; when calling on the phone or meeting people that were strangers. He said: “Remember, nobody is better than you!”[3]

There were the most evil people of all time against him. He almost died. But he was meant to work. And the human world has been created by humanity for us all to work and live and love.

And what’s the secret best thing about getting work? Your next job may just be the best job of your entire life. Your next job always has the possibility of being better than the last, or better than ever before.

It’s waiting for you now! Decide. Travel. Knock. Ask! It will be given to you!

[1] If you cannot walk, there are other methods for you to get around. This is because you are meant to work.

[2] Sometimes finding a person who is on your side and who will encourage you is hard. But, the world is full of friends you have not met yet. Find one! Find friends who will tell you the truth, and be on your side to do good things. If you can go on-line, go to talk with people in the groups at Linkedin.com .

[3] And, that does not mean that I am better than anyone else. I am not. But no one is better than me, at being me! And no one can do a better job at deciding what’s best for me than me. And no one will do a better job at getting me a job than me.
