• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Olive oil is very beneficial for the health and fitness. It is very effective to control the cholesterol level and keep the heart heal and healthy. It burns the fat quickly and loses the extra body weight without any side effects. It's also very good for removing the muscles and joint pain.

Thank you for the information. I agree that cold pressed, extra virgin olive oil benefits our health. However, i have seen recent headlines that what is being sold as healthy olive oil is NOT healthy at all, but a blend of less healthier oils, making what is sold as olive oil, un-healthy.

Do you have any information on it?

Thank you kindly.

Hi brinny, what you saw is correct, a lot of olive oils are blends of different types and this keeps costs down to manufacturers. It will say on the bottle "blend" so if you stick to straight virgin olive oils you are generally ok. They are more expensive but the health benefits out way the cost IMO.

Yes, I agree. Olive oil burns the fats which reduces all health issues. It keeps heart safe. It is really very beneficial. This was suggested by my doctor also.
Really? I hadn't heard that. I shall have to remember this.

The only problem with Olive oil is that it has a high fat content. The whole idea of "to much of a good thing, isn't a good thing". Our bodies are only ment to take in 35g of fat per day, healthy or not. So be mindful of how much you use when cooking :)

Does it depend on the kind of fat? For instance does it apply to extra virgin coconut oil?

I would say on an average day I have more than that. What is important is eating good fats, not processed - empty calories and trans fats. Will unprocessed oils, nuts, natural yoghurt, oily fish etc make you unhealthy? of course not, on the contrary. Moderation is key.

The real enemy is sugar.

That certainly does play a role, you can get it into the debate of saturated fats, trans fats, omegas, mono-saturated, etc. etc. But an easy way to remember is stay away from saturated and trans fats. They are very difficult for your body to break down and can cause cholesterol to elevate over time. They others, found in olive oil (pure/extra virgin), fish, egg yolks, those are healthy fats but those are the ones you want to keep below 35g per day. It adds up quick if you look at peanut butters, olive oil, even egg yolks have 3g fat per yolk. It seems like "whoa, there is no way to control that" but making the right nutritional decisions becomes easier the more you do it!

Moderation as the key, sounds good.

They do eat a lot of olive oil in southern Europe.

Seems to be almost staple for the diet in the region.

The enemy is refined sugar. Fruits, especially dates, raisins, bananas have a TON of sugar in them, but I can assure you, you will not gain wait from eating a banana. You are totally correct that moderation is key. Fats are not the enemy. Really nothing is the enemy if eaten in moderation. I eat Ice cream here and there and am in perfectly good shape.

Unless we're really careful, nearly everything we consume is just downright bad for us, with the GMO's etc. I buy only cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil, but i had heard that even that is "blended" in the US.

It's disturbing.

Indeed. People are unaware of just how much sugar is pumped into everyday products. Many of which have none of the fibre or digestive properties of natural sources. As a result, big jumps in blood sugar and fat deposits. Not to mention being more addictive than cocaine, and the prevalence and increase of diabetes and childhood obesity. Eating a few pieces of fruit a day is healthy, drinking fruit juices is not.

It is just crazy to think about. Like Brinny said, it is disgusting. Just try to do the best we can!

Roman gladiators used olive oil as salve for their wounds. It has the same type of benefits for internal injuries/illnesses. Definitely good for ya!
