• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

What should we demand of a church?

I don't know where this belongs, but it's prompted by the "Battered Sheep" thread, so I'm putting it here.

Every church I have ever been in has let me down in some way. If I had not kept my focus on God, I would have given up on churches long ago. But with so many flawed churches to choose from, it seems prudent to define priorities. Here are mine:

1. It has to help me seek and save the lost.
2. It has to help me grow spiritually.
3. It has to at least try to go by the Bible, even if its interpretation is a bit off.
4. It has to be within travel range.

As long as these criteria are all met, I can overlook a great many faults. If they're not, I'll move on with few regrets. The sooner I move on, the fewer the regrets.

The first two criteria are special, because they require me making effort on my part. If I make the effort, and it doesn't pay off, I move on. How much effort should I make before giving up? It's a judgment call. I try to stay a while after I'm feeling the itch, because the heart can be deceitful. But when I've felt a sense of futility for a year or more, I know I've given it a fair shot.

The last thing i do before giving up is I start pushing the envelope of what might be acceptable, in order to make it work. I risk angering people, because:

1. It's what many of the heroes of the Bible did.
2. There's much more to gain than there is to lose at this point.

I'm getting close to this point where I am attending now. The trends I'm seeing I've seen before, and they lead nowhere good.

Thoughts?

I don't know if we can "demand" of any church gathering, but there is a way to achieve the goals you mention. Every true believer in the Lord Jesus can seek and preach the Gospel message to souls wherever they are, and if one seeks a Bible-only fellowship they will be on a sound path for learning and study and blessings; thus growing spiritually. Write me if you wish to discuss this further, friend.

We don't need 'church' for personal evangelism. We can get out, meet and befriend others and build up sufficient trust that we can share your life with Christ.

The NT Christians never went to church. They were the church and would gather together to experience the life of the Spirit making known to each person the life of Jesus.

That is essentially true, John; however, it should be noted that while the Church universal is the mystical/spiritual "body of Christ" (all true believers), there were collective gatherings in many places of saints to worship and study together, and to commend each one to other assemblies, etc. I suppose we can say the NT saints were both a collective fellowship locally and with assemblies elsewhere; and were also individually responsible to minister Christ to the world in all their personal walk ---would you say?

I agree. The NY says "the church gathered" not "went to church". The former expresses the community nature of their times together rather than 'turning up' to a formal presentation of a religious ceremony.
