Hello brothers and sisters,

I guess the recent release of Microsoft Windows 10 had many of you either liking it very much or fuming with anger. If you belong to the second category and want to change badly to a good OS which has similar interface to Windows and has many useful program the answer is .............. not a mac. You see Apple and mac OS X and iPhones are costly and restricts your freedom so much. You should not need to spend way too much to get so little. And you should definitely need not to spend a fortune to do your everyday daily tasks. Do not buy a mac. Get a linux instead.

Fear not, when I say linux because modern linux have improved so much, it is almost indistinguishable from windows in functionality and does not need to type anything or remember anything. Here is how you do it.

Best User Friendly Linux: Linux Mint Cinnamon
Go to the below link and choose the appropriate processor bit of your computer (32bits or 64bits), and download an iso DVD image.
http://www.linuxmint.com/download.php

Now you need to make an installation image. For an easy way, simply insert a blank DVD in your DVD drive and write the iso image to that disk. Or with a little extra effort you can use your thumb drive, USB stick or SD card (via USB card reader) and write the iso image to that using either UNetBootin or pendrivelinux. The instructions are given in the following pages.
https://unetbootin.github.io/
http://www.pendrivelinux.com/

After you have created the installation media, boot your computer or laptop with it. As the installation media is a live media, you will be booted into a fully functional linux desktop. On the desktop double click on the shortcut named "Install Linux Mint". The installation procedure is similar to Windows XP or 7. You may wipe everything clean on the disk and install it or you may choose to partition your disk. Everything is done in GUI. After the installation reboot into your fresh Linux Mint Desktop.

You can install many useful softwares from software manager using mouse. Many popular softwares are entire LibreOffice Suite, VLC, Firefox, Opera, Filezilla, Wine, Thunderbird, GIMP, Skype, Audacity, Pidgin, Blender, Dropbox, Cheese, Picasa, Steam, Amarok, Avidemax, Pitivi, Rythmbox, Openshot, simple-scan, eVince etc. and many more. It also has many games and other things.

Here are some screenshots.

I just installed linux on two friends' machines and they both absolutely love it. Both of these users have only very basic skills, and for 95% of what they do there is no difference from Windows at all. In fact, the distro I use, LinuxLite, is closer to Win7 in its interface than is Win8 or Win10.

For those who do delve under the hood, though, there will be a learning curve in adapting from Windows. But it's not unreasonable. Usually.

Linux has indeed come a long way. The distro you prefer, Mint, is one of the best. I have used cinnamon's sibling, Mint Mate, and rate it #2 among the many I've tried. But then I found its cousin, LinuxLite, which is superb. I agree that this is the time to jump the MS train and switch to linux.

Since I've never had luck with Mint Cinnamon I wouldn't recommend it personally. If you have an older computer go with Mint XFCE or even Ubuntu MATE. If you have a more powerful computer I'd go with Mint KDE (which is what I use). I actually find it faster than most (on my system).

And yes, there is almost an indistinguishable difference from Windows...in appearance. If you need or want a specific program make sure you check out to see if it's for Linux as well, otherwise stay with Windows. There are alternatives to popular Windows/Mac programs you can use (even on Windows), but try them out first.
Maybe it's because I've been using Photoshop for over a decade but GIMP simply cannot measure up to it (even though I despise Adobe). I was running Linux for about 6 months exclusively with no other OS and found photography work to take longer to do and also required more programs and steps.
Office wise, LibreOffice should get the job done and I'd actually recommend using/trying it on Windows to replace MS Office anyway.

The one area I believe the Linux community needs to come together on and work on ASAP is a better installer for programs. While Debian based systems can easily install .deb files just like an .exe, not everything is available in .deb. Unless you stick exclusively to the software centre for programs, at times it can be annoyingly frustrating to track down ways to install programs.

Having said all that...I love my MacBook Pro and OS X far more since I got it.

Oh and when it comes to different Linux distros, check out DistroWatch.com. Take your time and look through the different ones, read up on them and see how easy or difficult they are. Are they light on resources or are they a resource hog...Otherwise you just end up with our own personal opinions and experiences which may or may not work out for you.

Thought I'd just add something. If you have some knowledge with Linux I'd recommend checking out SparkyLinux. I'm running their XFCE version now and it's honestly the single best Linux OS I've used. I'd actually rank it equal to my OS X for favourite system. I'm actually quite glad to be rid of Mint now.

Mac OS X is the most costly, buggy, vulnerable and useless operating system there is.

Nope, it's been the best system I've used yet. I haven't encountered any bugs and all systems have vulnerabilities (and please don't act as if linux doesn't have any).
Honestly Linux fanboys are the reason I often avoid talking linux on the internet.

I did and actually made a comment on there a month ago. It was in no way enlightening then and isn't now.

I get it, you have a thing against Apple. I've encountered plenty of people who are religious about hating Apple (most of whom have never actually even owned or used their products). It doesn't mean their software or hardware is bad. As matter of fact I've yet to encounter (personally) a laptop whose hardware is even remotely close to that of a MacBook Pro. My secondary laptop with Linux on it is actually quite expensive (over $1000) and the hardware is a joke compared to my MacBook.
Not everyone cares about being able to hack their systems to customize things. I have not encountered a single issue with my MacBook or OS X. It works for me and is far superior then my laptop with linux (for my photography needs) and I'm quite happy to be rid of Windows.

I hate Apple for good reasons and I am proud to say I never owned any Apple Mac or i product in my life. Unfortunately, I cannot say the same thing for using them. For those moments when I was forced to used a mac, I wanted to scream and punch it. The whole point of me making this thread is to stop people from rushing out and buying a mac when they throw away their Windows 10. Then you come along and sing paeans of mac. How does that achieve the purpose of this thread?

My first response [X].
I stated I personally have never had luck with Mint Cinnamon and wouldn't recommend it. I suggested Mint XFCE or Ubuntu MATE, or even Mint KDE (which at the time I was running). I didn't say go get a Mac.

I also pointed out that if you require MS Office or Photoshop, linux is NOT for you. Sorry to say but for many GIMP and LibreOffice are simply not good enough. You should also have told people to make sure the programs they use and like will work with linux. There's no quicker way to turn someone completely off of linux then to have them install linux and discover their favourite program isn't for linux.
Yes, most programs have alternatives. No, alternatives don't always work for people. WINE also isn't always the answer either.

THEN I said in one short sentence how I prefer my MacBook and OS X more since getting it, but never suggested to people to not consider linux and instead get a Mac.

I then provided a link to distrowatch so people could check out to see which distro fits their needs.

My second response [X]
I suggested a distro which I recently installed and fell in love with, saying it's the best linux distro I've used even ranking it equal as a favourite to OS X (which idk, would sound like high praise for the linux distro to the average user who would consider a Mac).

I talked about linux far more than I did Mac's or OS X, but I was being honest with people in some of the draw backs they *may* very well encounter. I never pointed them away from linux.
You are also naive if you believe people are going to dump Windows 10, especially for linux. Most will return to what they were using. If Windows 8 didn't drive people to linux en masse, 10 won't either as for the average user, it's much better than 8.
The city in which many linux fanboys praised for years, is now switching back to Windows. Linux isn't for everyone, just as spending $1000+ on a MacBook is not something everyone needs to do either.

GIMP and LibreOffice are good enough. It's just that they are not subsidized as Microsoft. MS is subsidized by Gov (open source to a lesser extent...especially gimp and libre).

Example:
Postgresql makes SQL Server seem like a joke. However, SQL Server is popular cause it is subsidized more.

My desktop had Mint on it but Linux has no drivers for the high end Creative audio card in my system. I use the machine as an audio workstation.
