Gosh I wonder what ppl think of me with my green hair, ripped jeans and piercing.

A couple of old ladies cornered me after mass once they were giddy over my hair and made me come back for tea in the church hall.

I hope jesus comes back wearing hats and piercings..

Because all it matters is what's in your heart

So shun the people into not coming to church over a baseball cap...not knowing if there is more to the story?

I can't remember if my husband ever wore a baseball cap in church...if so, he would have removed it for prayer. He wasn't a "good" "proper" Christian and I was happy anytime he actually went because something in his childhood made him hate church with a passion even if he was a Christian. Like I said, when he was going through radiation and chemo, he often slept in his hat...a soft skull cap...and if he was awake, he had dark sunglasses on too. He actually kind of looked like a thug part of the time but aside from the practicality of protecting his head, keeping it warm...it also made him feel more manly after losing his hair and 50 lbs. Be careful who you judge.

I have attended Cowboy churches and we worshipped in a barn. A barn is considered "being outdoors" so I suppose the cowboy hats were appropriately when they were worn on their heads....no different than hats are proper at graveside funeral services...for the same reason, hats are to be worn outside.

I come from the south....where being "proper" matters. So women who don't have time to have their hair and makeup perfect after getting all the rest of the family ready for church stay home so nobody gossips about how disrespectful they are to come to church "looking like THAT". The story is simply "mom wasn't feeling well." But if things were that hectic, she probably needed a few hours of worship more than on those perfect days.... God doesn't care...only the gossips do.

Oh my goodness, really? I'd attend in a jogging suit with my hair uncombed lol just to annoy them.

I would wear ripped shorts lol
Lol I once went to church in pink hotpants. I had no idea they'd consider that to be weird. My mom took a guy to church from her work who always tried to flirt with her and gave stupid comments lol and he said to her when he saw me: Hey the girls look hip here!
Lol but he did give his heart to the Lord that day.

Exactly. It's like an interview -- Part of it is tradition that you dress prim and proper, the other part is presenting yourself well to those who host you.

I can't think of anywhere more appropriate to try and present myself well than church.

Does God care? Probably not. But it's a personal thing. I personally am not comfortable with the idea of dressing down for church.

Yes. This.

It's more or less a 'personal' thing in my own case. Maybe it's just me, maybe it's the way I was brought up, maybe it's because I attend a very 'high' church. Who knows. I just personally find it appropriate.

I suppose it really depends on you, and perhaps your experiences.

There are different views on respect, politeness and all that fun stuff. Really it's no different to the shock people who were brought up believing handshakes are appropriate for all genders in all circumstances, trying to introduce themselves to someone who was brought up believing unrelated members of the opposite sex should not physically touch. Both can become confused and feel insulted/shunned, purely because the other does not understand the background behind those decisions.

My family have always been of the opinion that showing respect for God (regardless of whether He cares or not) can be done through selecting clothing that, if not formal, is your best. In that way it's less about doing it because God wants us to be sitting like cookie cutters in a row, but because that is how one person believes respect is shown.

If someone turned up dressed in hot pants, boob tube and heels would I want to talk to them? Yes. To find out their view on church attire. You learn a lot from discussing things with those who hold a different view, even if it doesn't change your own it helps you understand theirs.

Edit: I need to stop thought splurging, and actually use notepad to form a proper response.

Oooh now I understand what ripped jeans is. My kid always goes to church in ripped jeans. If I buy it new within a week it's ripped lol. I thought you meant this, ripped off:

When I just got saved and wore denim you'd get a preaching about it that you should wear a dress. One enthousiastic guy who did the worship left, because they said he couldn't do the worship without a tie.

We are trying to put our rules into Gods mouth.

Nowhere in the Bible do I know of that says you cannot wear a hat inside a church.

I know the Jews had little hats that they wore inside.

If we cannot wear hats then what are the rules on the shirt they should wear. How many buttons does it need? What about their pants, do they have to be made of a specific material or are all materials ok? Maybe we should stop wearing hats on Saturday so by Sunday our hair will have no flat spots from wearing a hat. Lets make a bunch of rules that nobody can follow.

Just 50 years ago people wore suits to go out for dinner even if it was a diner. Now people wear shorts to church.

Its the way it is. Your military training is just that, military training and as you know once you become a civilian things change.

I believe that the only place you have to look nice at is court.

Maybe its cos the OP isn a fan of baseball?
I dont know.
I dont know why guys wear them outside of the sportsfield...really it must be the fashion or something. I guess its kinda odd, like wearing a motorcycle helmet to church.

Hoodies in church are fine for women. Because our long hair is too glorious, and men get distracted. But if men wear baseball caps, that prolly shows theynlove baseball more than God?
Women dont wear baseball caps unless they trying to be like a guy or something.

I think it has to do with location and up bringing more than anything else. Where I grew up we were taught it was disrespectful for a man to wear his hat during prayer or in the church building.
