I think the answer to both your questions is "it depends".

Lets go back to say 1785.

A pastor of a big church in Philadelphia (the most populated city in the US at the time) is probably going to have most of his physical needs (food, clothing, housing) met by the church and would likely have a good bit of time to do the things you say.

The pastor of a tiny church out on the frontier is likely going to have to make sure his cows are milked, chickens fed, wood chopped, crops taken care of etc. in addition to being a pastor and that's going to cut into his time quite a bit.

Not unlike today between a pastor that is full time vs. one that is bi-vocational.

I agree there is a lot of variation in how pastors spend their time. I know pastors to spend a good portion of their week preparing Bible studies and pastors who council many hours. Some clean the church building and some don't have to do any of that. Some have every word of their message typed out some just a few words for an outline. Some spend a quite a bit of time with the music of the church and some that is turned over to someone else to look after. One pastor told me he had a church were he did every funeral in the area and took up most of his time.

It depends on the time they made for those things. Periodically it changed, even in the old days.

I remember being told that John Wesley rose at four every morning to pray and thought to myself, I could never do that. Today I rise at 4 am every day to pray. A respected friend said to me many years ago, the first thing I do when I wake is pull the Bible to me and read. He was greatly used in evangelism with signs following.

I think the real question is, how was their relationship with God and does it differ today?

How is yours, too? I keep working on mine and find time spent with the Father is most instructive and enjoyable. Sometimes its almost all day because I just want to be there and hate it when the duties of the flesh get in the way, but I don't believe in "chucking sickies" to spend time with God. Its not a good witness to the world.

In my humble opinion-past and/or present pastors, teachers, evangelists, etc... the following was/is true:

The individuals that walked (and walk) in the authority of their inheritance in Christ Jesus (powerful anointing-Holy Ghost) truly had/have a hunger, thirst, and zeal for the things of God-intimacy (seeking His presence), hunger, thirst, and zeal for His Word- praise and worship, prayer, service, being in the House Of God, fellowshipping with fellow saints. Truly living under the audience of One (Abba Father, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. Being a God pleaser not a man pleaser. Thanking God daily that He is making His desires our desires. Passion for the things of God!!! Going from glory to glory-accepting the refiner's fire when needed and/or pruning (dispensing with the dross).

My apologies for the short answer but they were on their knees in prayer more than anything. Yes they had a life but many of today's proclaiming preachers are seeking profession rather than it being a passion and burden for the lost. The clarity of Gods voice is better heard on ones knees. A mans relationship with Christ must be on point before he can appoint.
