    Statues

Great question, my friend. I'm looking forward to knowledgeable responses on this topic. I've actually wondered when the tradition of statues developed in the western church, and why icons fell into disuse in the west.

Non vernacular services in Orthodox countries

So your parish worships in the vernacular? Interesting! Hmm...I'm starting to wonder about my Belorussian coworker's experience. She said that her old parish and other Belorussian parishes worshiped in old Slavonic.

Non vernacular services in Orthodox countries

Wow this thread has become amazing! :) I wasn't expecting so many responses to this topic! So from what I have gathered, in most predominately Orthodox countries the liturgy actually is celebrated in the vernacular? That seems to be the case so far, from what I've read.

I completely agree with you. I'm from the southern US (South Carolina to be exact) and we are predominately Protestant, with a smattering of Catholics thrown into the mix. Orthodoxy, even with English services, is still bewildering to your average American who goes to liturgy for the first time...

    Orthodoxy and small town America

Hey man, what area of the south do you live in? I'm from the upstate of South Carolina so I know what you mean by the lack of Orthodox churches (though I'm blessed to live in an area where, though we are small towns, we have a choice of three different Orthodox churches). I would tell you to...

HAha so in this case, the Slavonic actually served as a language BRIDGE for you guys, huh? :) Cool to hear! And...CHRIST IS RISEN!

I'm actually not EXACTLY sure if the liturgy in predominately Orthodox countries is in the vernacular or the traditional 'liturgical language'. That's why I made this thread, in the hopes of getting responses from Orthodox currently residing in Orthodox countries! :) And since it is Sunday...

    Rod Dreher-Article post Christian

Indeed...I sit back and wonder sometimes how our country got into this sad state of affairs. In much much better news, as it is early Sunday morning here in China...CHRIST IS RISEN! INDEED HE IS RISEN!

Non vernacular services in Orthodox countries

Really? I didn't know this! I thought all predominately Orthodox countries worshiped in the liturgical language of their particular church (Koine Greek for the church in Greece, church Slavonic for all the 'Slavic' churches, etc). And everyone, can we please keep this thread on topic? This...

Hey, thanks for the amazing post! Seems we are both 'transplants' at the moment..I'm living and working in China as an English teacher right now! What do you do in Russia? :) I have to say, I AM sympathetic to the language issue when people bring it up...I'm of the kind that thinks the...

Non vernacular services in Orthodox countries

First of all, a blessed Holy Friday to all! It is Saturday morning in China, so technically Holy Saturday here. :) I was having a discussion with a coworker of mine who is from Belarus and was brought up Orthodox, but is sadly now Hindu (she's of the 'spiritual, not religious' crowd). We were...
