Polycarp1,
So you, having posed the question, and me given my opinion, can you respond with yours please.

That's why I bumped the other thread from 2008 - because I'd done a pretty good job of summing up where I came from in it. Also see my response to Duckybill's last question to me, which I'll be writing and posting immediately after hitting "submit reply" to this.

Which commandments would that be? This maybe? :

Exodus 31:14-15 (NKJV)
14 You shall keep the Sabbath, therefore, for it is holy to you. Everyone who profanes it shall surely be put to death; for whoever does any work on it, that person shall be cut off from among his people. 15 Work shall be done for six days, but the seventh is the Sabbath of rest, holy to the Lord. Whoever does any work on the Sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death.

You don't really want to keep ALL of His commands, now do you?

Well, if you want me to sum it up in a few words, I'll refer you to what Jesus said summed it up in a few words:

Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together. 35One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question:

36"Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?" 37Jesus replied: " 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.'[a] 38This is the first and greatest commandment. 39And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' 40All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments." (Matthew 22:34-40)

So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets. (Matthew 7:12)

How do we show this love? Well, Jesus didn't teach the Summary of the Law, the Two Great Commandments, only once. Here's the setting where Luke shows Him teaching it, and the example He gave of applying it:

25On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. "Teacher," he asked, "what must I do to inherit eternal life?"

26"What is written in the Law?" he replied. "How do you read it?"

27He answered: " 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind'[c]; and, 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'[d]"

28"You have answered correctly," Jesus replied. "Do this and you will live."

29But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?"

30In reply Jesus said: "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he fell into the hands of robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. 31A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. 32So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. 34He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, took him to an inn and took care of him. 35The next day he took out two silver coins[e] and gave them to the innkeeper. 'Look after him,' he said, 'and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.'

36"Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?"

37The expert in the law replied, "The one who had mercy on him."
Jesus told him, "Go and do likewise."

Remember that the Samaritans were half-caste outcasts from Jewish society who were heretics from Pharisaic and Saduccee-ic Judaism. It would be equivalent to today suggesting that Cardinal; O'Connor and Senator Imhofe ignored the guy needing help, who was then helped by Mubarak Dahir, an Arab-American gay activist, in terms of the impact the "Good Samaritan" would have had on His Jewish listeners.

Or if you want to get down and dirty on what He judges by, try this:

31"When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his throne in heavenly glory. 32All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.

34"Then the King will say to those on his right, 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.'

37"Then the righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?'

40"The King will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.'

41"Then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.'

44"They also will answer, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?'

45"He will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.'

46"Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life."
(Matthew 25:31-46)

We are warned (not commanded) not to judge:

"Do not judge, or you too will be judged. 2For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you." (Matthew 7:1-2)

Notice this is phrased as a monitory, not a prohibitory commandment. Jesus was aware there are times when we must render judgment, for one reason or another -- and tells us that our righteousness must exceed that of the Pharisees. The clue here is in the second verse, which is re-emphasized ten verses later in the Golden Rule (quoted above). If you must judge, judge in that manner in which you yourself would wish to be judged: with mercy, forgiveness, compassion, acceptance, and love. We are shown the consequences of not giving these things as we have receved them:

21Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, "Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother when he sins against me? Up to seven times?"

22Jesus answered, "I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.[f]

23"Therefore, the kingdom of heaven is like a king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants. 24As he began the settlement, a man who owed him ten thousand talents[g] was brought to him. 25Since he was not able to pay, the master ordered that he and his wife and his children and all that he had be sold to repay the debt.

26"The servant fell on his knees before him. 'Be patient with me,' he begged, 'and I will pay back everything.' 27The servant's master took pity on him, canceled the debt and let him go.

28"But when that servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii.[h] He grabbed him and began to choke him. 'Pay back what you owe me!' he demanded.

29"His fellow servant fell to his knees and begged him, 'Be patient with me, and I will pay you back.'

30"But he refused. Instead, he went off and had the man thrown into prison until he could pay the debt. 31When the other servants saw what had happened, they were greatly distressed and went and told their master everything that had happened.

32"Then the master called the servant in. 'You wicked servant,' he said, 'I canceled all that debt of yours because you begged me to. 33Shouldn't you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you?' 34In anger his master turned him over to the jailers to be tortured, until he should pay back all he owed.

35"This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother from your heart."
(Matthew 18:21-35)

When you refuse to listen to and accept the word of your gay brother or sister concerning himself or herself, and instead claim that, since your sins have been forgiven, you may judge his or her sins, you are being just like the unforgiving servant and can expect the same condign punishment for your own sins. Including that of climbing up into God's Bema judgment seat as though you were anything but a sinner like the rest of us, saved by His grace alone and nothing of yourself.

Npw, there are reasons for believing that the half dozen or so "clobber passages" used to condemn gays speak, to be sure, of same-sex sex acts -- but not all of them in all circumstances, just as the prohibitions on rape and adultery do not mean all heterosexual sex acts, but only ones violating the marriage vow or forced on an unconsenting 'partner'. But whether or not these arguments are valid doesn't matter. Because you are told how to treat your brother or sister, your neighbor -- which means all human beings, not just other Christians or those you happen to like -- and sitting in judgment over their sins, even if you pretend you're not doing it and it's really "just pointing our God's word", is most empghatically not it. Until you can submit photographic evidence that Jesus showed up bodily next to your computer, said "Move over", and made those posts in your name, it's you who is quoting the clobber passages in an effort to condemn gays, not "God's Word". The devil, as has been pointed out for centuries, can quote Scripture to his own purpose. And breaking God's own explicit commandments yourself to hold up the cloober passages out of context as grounds to condemn gay people is doing his work, and not our Lord's.

But we still have to deal with this:

1 Corinthians 6:9 (NKJV)
9 Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites,

Right. Because the translators who rendered arsenokoites as "homosexuals" were divinely inspired to do so and could not possibly have gotten it wrong -- even though I've been pointing out for several years, and Mike Wood has showed up to give the thorough analysis, that the word really referenced those who hired for their sexual services the young enslaved boy prostitutes devoted to the Temple of Aphrodite, just as the Leviticus passage references those who had sex with acolytes of Ba'al as idolatrous fertility rituals. Which is why Paul coined a word echoing the Leviticus passage instead of using one of the dozen or so words Greek had for gay sex, which was common in Greek culture.

I believe there will be those who claim that the current translation of aresenokoites to mean homosexual is right because translators always know what they are doing and are divinely inspired.

But earlier translations of arsenokoites to condemn kidnappers, slave traders, wearing the color purple, and masturbation were obviously wrong because the translators didn’t know what they were doing and were obviously not divinely inspired

Like the way condemnation for homosexuality was added to the bible…because man wanted the bible to conform to his ways

Got that quote about how you can tell when man has made god in his image handy?

Phinehas and Duckybill, I've answered you at length. Kindly address my comments.

I find it interesting that 'your side' continually cites sources external to the English translations we have. You also insist on re-writing our English translations. If our English translations are so terribly unreliable you must find it very difficult to even read them at all.

Polycarp1,
That's why I bumped the other thread from 2008 - because I'd done a pretty good job of summing up where I came from in it. Also see my response to Duckybill's last question to me, which I'll be writing and posting immediately after hitting "submit reply" to this.
well you have mine view. Good luck with
yours.

Now the passages you cite are totally irrelevant to the issue. Its like observing for the love of the Fatherland the Nazi’s persecuted the Jews. First you have to know what love means.
The two greatest commandments which sum up the law and prophets, to love God and to love ones neighbour are written in the OT law and has the punishment of stoning for sexual immorality.
Of course Jesus was speaking to someone who were looking at the law, which you seem to be doing, Jesus gave a new command to His disciples, to love one another as He loved so the world will know who His disciples are. Jesus also explained to love Him is to seek to follow His teaching and demonstrated His love on the cross and in the resurrection.
You concentrated on love your neighbour, Lev 19. Why would you believe that summed up the law include Lev 18 & 20 that a man shall not lie with another man as with a woman? Seems you like the idea but not what it entails.
Jesus tells that the Kingdom is like the seed, Satan seeks to remove the word.
The teaching of the good Samaritan means that anyone, whether we like them or not, whether society likes them or not, deserves not to be passed over but to be attended to. That means if the man on the street was identified as gay, the disciple of Christ is still to help him in his need.
If it was a known thief, the disciple of Christ is still to help him in such a need. It doesn’t mean the disciple should then approve of theft or same gender relations.

When you refuse to listen to and accept the word of your gay brother or sister concerning himself or herself, and instead claim that, since your sins have been forgiven, you may judge his or her sins, you are being just like the unforgiving servant and can expect the same condign punishment for your own sins.
Firstly the word of God doesn’t allow for ‘gay brother’ God created woman for man, ‘gay’ is at odds. Your claim ‘gay brother’ must refer to those who agree with you rather than God’s word. Its baseless, you have been shown what the Bible says.
The word of God says homosexual offenders shall not enter the Kingdom, the Christian in love will attempt to restore their brother from error, you may accuse them but they are only acting out of God’s love.

Falsehood! As there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus passages do not condemn believers. The only people who could feel condemned are those who are convicted to know same gender relations are wrong and who haven’t received the revelation of freedom and repentance through Christ.
Gays is an oxmoron, God created woman to be united with man, gay is same sex attraction which the Bible does not describe as people.
First show from scripture where your ‘gay’ comes from.
Secondly, men with men instead of the natural with women is condemned, what men with men instead of women do you think is not covered by men with men instead of women?

The fact of the matter is that the Bible translations for arsenokoites say homosexuals or sodomites. That’s fact and what the Christian churches believe. The compound arsen and koites mean men/male bedding (fam.) It also mirrors the septuagint Leviticus. It is also in line with God’s creation purpose for man and woman and in line with the other condemnations of same gender relations such as Genesis 19, Romans 1 etc.
Some of you are trying to suggest it doesn’t mean homosexual or man with man, yet the more you suggest a doubt the more evident it becomes there is no viable challenge.
The bottom line is that Christianity as a whole does not accept the revision you are saying.

Homosexual did not exist as a word until quite recently. To take a 2000 year old passage and insert a 20th Century word into it to fit a certain agenda does not good Christian translation make. You just want to believe it's accurate so you can continue to judge and condemn people you don't like under the guise of proper Christian righteousness.

Sodomite also meant nothing related to sexuality until quite recently. I believe, even in the 17th Century KJV Bible, the word was translated to mean general wickedness (in correlation with the true sins of Sodom, not homosexuality). It's the anti-gays who have distorted scripture to align with their personal prejudices. Translators can't be trusted.

As to Christianity as a whole. Christianity is the most divided religion on Earth. With 35,000 denominations having differences in dogma, interpretation and belief, we can hardly claim "Christianity as a whole" means diddly squat. Christianity as a whole also used to believe the Earth was at the center of the universe and the sun revolved around it because of what the Bible said. Good thing we didn't listen to Christianity as a whole!

As there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus passages do not condemn believers.

Look again at those passages Polycarp1 quoted. In the parable of the wicked servant, the servant had already been forgiven at the time he failed to shew mercy to his fellow-servant, and in the end he was given the same treatment he gave his fellow servant, just as Matthew 7:1-5 warns.

In the "least of these" passage, Jesus tell us that many who believe they are Christians are not of Christ, so just having had an altar call or a conversion experience is not evidence that we are Christians.

So how do we know if we are truly Spirit-filled Christians?

Two ways (though ultimately they are the same way):

1)
By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.
John 13:35

If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but do not have love, I have become a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge; and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. And if I give all my possessions to feed the poor, and if I surrender my body to be burned, but do not have love, it profits me nothing.

Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant, does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered, does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

Love never fails; but if there are gifts of prophecy, they will be done away; if there are tongues, they will cease; if there is knowledge, it will be done away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part; but when the perfect comes, the partial will be done away. When I was a child, I used to speak like a child, think like a child, reason like a child; when I became a man, I did away with childish things. For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face; now I know in part, but then I will know fully just as I also have been fully known.

But now faith, hope, love, abide these three; but the greatest of these is love.
1 Corinthians 13:1-13 (NASB)
2)
Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.

A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.
Matthew 7:16-20 (See also Luke 6:43-44)

For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.

Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another.
Galatians 5:17-26
I try to live in Love, and to walk in accordance to the fruit of the Spirit; I am not perfect, but each day the Holy Spirit gives me the serenity, strength, and wisdom to do a little better than the day before.

Jase,
My side of the argument doesn’t think homosexual and heterosexual are concepts that reflect God’s purposes according to His word in the Bible.
Homosexual means having a same sex attraction. A two thousand year old passage still describes men with men instead of the natural with women as error and that mean the modern concept homosexual is error. An even older passage say men lying with men as with women is detestable to God.
It doesn’t matter how old the passage is it is quite clear what God has conveyed.
And to imply that the Bible can be replaced with modern thinking is hardly the Christian faith.

You just want to believe it's accurate so you can continue to judge and condemn people you don't like under the guise of proper Christian righteousness.
It says what its says, you we don’t hate people you should not misrepresent people in that way. If you didn’t believe what the Bible says you wouldn’t be worried.

It's the anti-gays who have distorted scripture to align with their personal prejudices. Translators can't be trusted.

I know the passages,. As I said the NT explains there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. If people are feeling condemned then they are being convicted of sin, there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, we are free from sin and shame.

In the "least of these" passage, Jesus tell us that many who believe they are Christians are not of Christ, so just having had an altar call or a conversion experience is not evidence that we are Christians.
that’s another discussion about who you think are Christians, that’s assumption. The scripture says there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ, we don’t feel condemned, your side of the argument is talking about us condemning when we quote the scriptures concerning homosexual relations.

By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another. John 13:35 [/quote
] But encouraging others to sin in sexual perversion is not loving. Jesus said those who do not obey His teaching don’t love Him. Look at what Jesus said about those who lead others astray in sin… or is that condemning gays again?

Jase,
My side of the argument doesn’t think homosexual and heterosexual are concepts that reflect God’s purposes according to His word in the Bible.
And your side would be wrong.

Homosexual means having a same sex attraction. A two thousand year old passage still describes men with men instead of the natural with women as error and that mean the modern concept homosexual is error.
Wrong. As BBW and Ollie have pointed out countless times, the verse in question is referring to denying who you are and doing that which is unnatural for you to do. It is unnatural for a gay man to reject his nature, and sleep with a woman just to meet societies PC standard. Had Paul actually wanted to condemn modern day homosexuality, he would have used one of the countless greek words that directly refers to it, since homosexuality was quite common and accepted in Greek and Roman society.

And how you infer that what Paul is speaking of automatically applies to modern day relationships is beyond me. Sounds like you are just making things up now.

An even older passage say men lying with men as with women is detestable to God.
No, in Hebrew that passage actually says that a man shall not force himself upon another man, as he does a woman, since raping women was both acceptable and applauded by God in the OT, where as in a patriarchial society, for a man to be dominated by another man was very taboo.

And considering I'm a Jew, and most Reform, Reconstructionist and many Conservative Jews have determined that leviticus is interpreted incorrectly based on modern understanding of homosexuality, I'll side with the Jewish view on the issue. I would far sooner trust a council of Rabbis to interpret the OT over some random Christian.

It doesn’t matter how old the passage is it is quite clear what God has conveyed.
Yes, the Bible is so emphatically clear on all issues that 35,000 denominations of Christianity had to be created to encompass everyone's disagreement....

And to imply that the Bible can be replaced with modern thinking is hardly the Christian faith.
Yeah, how dare we apply modern day thinking to actually correct the errors in the Bible. Had we followed your advice, Christians would still be teaching that the Earth is geocentric, and there was a global flood 4000 years ago... Oh wait...

It says what its says, you we don’t hate people you should not misrepresent people in that way. If you didn’t believe what the Bible says you wouldn’t be worried.
Anyone who believes the Bible is to be taken word for word, 100% literally, plain as day, knows absolutely nothing about it's intention, culture, context, or audience. Anyone who condemns other people based on a shotty understanding of an ancient book, is not worth listening to.

The Bible is sound, its says what it says and it is the faith once delivered, the translators can be trusted. If you don’t like it form your own religion.
The Bible is sound in what way? It isn't sound on science that's for sure. Revelation is completely in error, as it's the wrong one, and the Bible has been used to murder, pillage, destroy, hate, and condemn everyone from blacks, slaves, women, children, muslims, witches, gays, scientists, atheists, etc. etc.

Based on the trend of how the Bible has been used to destroy humanity over the centuries, it wouldn't be hard to argue that it is the most destructive device ever created by human hands.

Jase,
And your side would be wrong.
Again that’s just empty and baseless contradiction, I have demonstrated why your side is wrong.

Wrong. The verses say what I have quoted, BBW and Ollie haven’t given any scripture to support homosexual and heterosexual, yet they still sue the terms and gay.

the verse in question is referring to denying who you are and doing that which is unnatural for you to do.
Wrong, that’s exactly what it doesn’t say. Are you blind? Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. 27In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women” Its says the natural is men and women, the unnatural is men with men and women with women. You are proposing the very opposite of what the word of God says.

It is unnatural for a gay man
A what man? Where does it say gay man?

Had Paul actually wanted to condemn modern day homosexuality,

Men with men instead of women is homosexual as opposed to heterosexual, in what way can men with men instead of women be different then to now?

No, in Hebrew that passage actually says that a man shall not force himself upon another man, as he does a woman,
No its doesn’t, he Bible doesn’t say that and neither does the Hebrew.

Yeah, how dare we apply modern day thinking to actually correct the errors in the Bible.
I dare, all scripture is God breathed and useful for teaching, rebuking and correcting so that the people of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. 2 Tim 3:16, it’s the word of God.

True we agree there, but anyone who adds and changes it so that it suits their own ideas knows nothing about God.

The Bible is sound, its says what it says and it is the faith once delivered, the translators can be trusted. Of course the Bible has been misued throughout history, and continues to be misused today, not least by you.
