The story goes back long before the creation of man, a place in non-time where entities first created the foundation for future rebellious mankind by way of their own original adversarial ways to the will of God. The blinded were preparing to create the blind. For mankind, being adversarial by nature since the Garden means all of us do not have the will of God first and foremost within our thoughts, but instead simply thinking about what there can be in it for us. Our original sin. Contrary to God's will, we seek self-satisfaction rather than focusing on the well-being of all.
So obviously these little human satans, many Christians included, would avoid truly seeking God as the further they seek, the more they come to realize we have it all backwards in the world we have made in our own image. As a result, they often fear becoming outcasts in this world of man. Their theology can even seek loopholes, which can sound wise to man as we fool ourselves and draw attention away from the hypocrisy. Claiming to represent God while seeking to protect ourselves.
Self-interest is very protective of 'self'. It is only a narrow path that is needed for the few who actually reject the ways of man for the ways of God and the Kingdom... as we were advised to do. This repentant attitude causes rifts from the very top of society right down to within an immediate family. Being in the world but not of it can be a rocky ride if improperly applied, unless one learns the art of neutrality. That, of course, is the purpose of loving all as self.
However, the more one comes to understand the will of God in comparison to the contrary will of man, the more attractive rebellion to mankind becomes. This, even along with the adverse reactions from those absorbed in 'self' who fear anything outside their burgeoning box of misdirection. Ironic that this path of 'self' destruction on the part of the repentant is the path to salvation.
