Mark 1:

40 a leper [L1] came to him, imploring him, and kneeling said to him, “If you will, you can make me clean.” 41Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand and touched him and said to him, “I will; be clean.” 42And immediately the leprosy left him, and he was made clean. 43And Jesusi sternly charged him and sent him away at once, 44and said to him, “See that you say nothing to anyone,
Why did Jesus tell L1 not to tell anyone about the miracle?

but go, show yourself to the priest and offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded, for a proof to them.” 45 But he went out and began to talk freely about it, and to spread the news,
L1 disobeyed Jesus.

so that Jesus could no longer openly enter a town, but was out in desolate places, and people were coming to him from every quarter.
Jesus didn't want too much publicity provided by L1 at this point.

Peter, James, and John saw Jesus transfigured in Matthew 17:

9 as they were coming down the mountain, Jesus commanded them, “Tell no one the vision, until the Son of Man is raised from the dead.”
The secrecy had to do with timing.

But then, on another occasion, Jesus healed a man with a demon in Luke 8:

39 “Return to your home, and declare how much God has done for you.” And he went away, proclaiming throughout the whole city how much Jesus had done for him.
In this case, Jesus wanted him to tell. Jesus wanted to control the timing of the publicity.

Jesus fed the five thousand in John 6:

14 When the people saw the sign that he had done, they said, “This is indeed the Prophet who is to come into the world!”
15 Perceiving then that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, Jesus withdrew again to the mountain by himself.
Jesus wanted to avoid too much publicity and too much misunderstanding on the part of the people.

People thought that Messiah Jesus would introduce a geo-political kingdom, Matthew 11:

12 From the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven has suffered violence, and the violent take it by force.
Jesus often told the people, his disciples, and the demons to be quiet because he needed to balance between publicity and timing.
