Opinion: Democrats can still jettison Biden as an ‘August Surprise’

At a certain point, none of this makes sense.
“This” being President Joe Biden officially becoming the Democratic nominee for president come the convention in August. The number of Democrats who are honestly thrilled by that eventuality would not fill a Mini Cooper.
A growing number of Democrats see Biden as becoming the political version of “Groundhog Day.” Every night they go to sleep dreaming of having a new nominee, and every morning they wake up to the same old Biden. A president many now see as gaffe-prone, needing to be told where to stand, where to walk and what to say.
What is being offered up as a “worry” or a “concern” to the public is being treated as a “blind panic” by the Democrats I speak with on a regular basis. As left-of-center Jonathan Chait recently framed it in New York Magazine: “The point here is that Democrats have a Joe Biden problem, not a partywide problem.” Nightmare may have been a more accurate description.
Regarding Biden being a drag on the Democrats chances to hold the Senate in November, a Democratic strategist told The Hill: “Let’s cut through the BS, on the three top issues — inflation, immigration, and the war in Gaza — he’s in the toilet. The polls show he’s not doing well with some of the key voting blocs: young voters, Black voters, Hispanic voters.”

Or will they hold onto him like grim death?

He has been unbelievably competent, with long lists of successes that conservative media is doing double propaganda disinformation duty to suppress.

But people believe the lies, and that's scary. I'm sure Breitbart has propaganda dossiers on potential replacements as well.

Whose RW fever dream is this? (The MSN link opened a blank page for me.) At this point, why should we take seriously anyone who writes or posts such things? Joe Biden is no more or less infirm than he was in January or last year and those were far better times to do that if the Democrats really thought it needed to be done.

From the piece:
Douglas MacKinnon, a political and communications consultant, was a writer in the White House for Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush, and former special assistant for policy and communications at the Pentagon during the last three years of the Bush administration.

Also a press secretary for Bob Dole:

From the OP:

But the truly troubling news for the Democrats does not stop there. Biden is badly losing a three-front political war, and every single person who works in that arena — Democrat or Republican — knows it.
He is losing, or has lost, the confidence of much of the Democratic political class, who fear he is permanently off his game. He and the Democrats are getting rocked weekly by an ascending Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who is getting on one state ballot after the other. The latest is Texas, where Kennedy just turned in an astounding 245,572 signatures — twice as many as are required — to gain ballot access in the Lonestar State.
If one were to extrapolate that number based on basic statistics, it’s easy to imagine that Kennedy could have more than 10 times that number of voters in Texas. Voters who many Democrats believe — especially given the full-on assault on Kennedy from the Democratic National Committee and the Biden White House — RFK will drain from Biden.

It's easy to imagine that Kennedy could have nearly 2.5 million voters in Texas? lol, is that guy out of his gourd? There were about 11.2 million people who voted for President in Texas in 2020. Trump got 5.9 million and Biden got 5.3 million. This guy is proposing that RFK Jr. would pull 42% as many people as Trump and nearly half as many as Biden? A guy who's polling at 13%?

In 2020, third party candidates only garnered 2.9 million votes, combined, across the entire country.

2.5 million votes is more than the total of all 2016 third party votes that weren't for Gary Johnson. (i.e. more than Jill Stein and Evan McMullin combined)

This is some ascendance:

The Democrats like Biden. At least the vocal ones do.

Both parties are not for me, and both are not helping our society. In 2024, I am about ready to vote for a different Joe, one from 2000 years ago. Just need a time machine, preferably one from Doc Brown that can go 88 mph., or maybe borrow some tech from the Xa'na (ethics study on sci-fi tech, not relevant to the current thread).

The hyperbole would be better suited in a sentence that didn’t have “thrilled” and “Biden” in it.
“Thrilling“ has neither an attribute nor a response of/to Joe Biden.
Yeah, he’s boring, after four years of Friday night news dumps, I was ready for “boring”.

I have thought for months that Biden will get dumped, especially if the polls are down. There are two ways they can do this. First, the delegates can do it at the Democratic convention. Many delegates can switch and if that occurs the nomination can go to any Democrat that meets the qualifications of the Constitution. The second way is to declare him incompetent. 25th Amendment: How do we decide whether the president is competent? | Brookings
The reason they are waiting is that Harris is unlikely to be the nominee. So no need to give her an edge by Biden stepping down now. Newsome or Michelle Obama have been floated. I am sure Hillary would like a chance too. An interesting possibility would be to select Michelle as P and Barack as VP. She could step down in two years, and Barack could finish her term. The 22nd Amendment says if you fill in for another President you can have up to a total of ten years. It seems that Trump is going to win though. There are too many negatives and I think there are more to come.

I think delegates can only switch on second ballot, so the first ballot would have enough committed Biden delegates.

He's definitely not incompetent.

I do believe he is a patriot, and given the looming and catastrophic threat to.our nation he would choose to drop out, citing poor health, if necessary.

A lot hinges on whether justice is done in the NY trial.

Sadly, Bush 41 and 43 appointed corrupt and anti-democracy judges to the Supreme Court, who may grant lifetime immunity to someone who shares their oligarchical ideals.

If it were not for half of the country liking Joe Biden as their savior from Donald Trump he would have been dropped like a hot potato already.

St. Joseph, as a member of the House of David, would have made a good politician, but I suspect he would have echoed his Son in saying 'My kingdom , where I serve, is not of this world'.

As you may know, I am a 'never trumper'. Who didn't vote for Hillary and didn't vote for Joe and will not vote for Joe. I find the Joe to stop Donald and the Donald to stop Joe sides absurd. Neither party has a lick of sense any more in picking such awful candidates. I will cast my lonely vote for the American Solidarity Party, a centrist pro-life party. And either Joe or Donald will be our next president but I will not be complicit in the victory of a bad president elected because the other one is also bad.

Hey look it’s the weekly “no really this time!” thread about Bidens imminent removal.
Have they kept up with the "no really this time!" Trump’s going to jail threads?

Yeah, recently, I have realized that even Biden is not good for our country, especially after what he did on Easter 2024. Trump is just as bad, or even worse, by adding to the Bible, and what he did three years ago. I might cast my vote for a 3rd party also, but we will have to prevent another Jan 6, so I have no idea what to do. Once Joe and Trump get too old, in 2028 I will definitely try a 3rd party.

I can respect that. Thank you. No hyperbole, no evil people placing judges etc. clear concisely written. Well said

Conservative media is dwarfed by liberal media.
No, it isn’t. Fox news, for example, consistently crushes its competition. In prime time slots, it often has more viewers than CNN and MSNBC combined.

Talk radio, likewise, has been dominated by conservatives for over 30 years.

Libs win in print media because conservatives don’t read as much.
I never would have heard of "Breitbart" if I didn't see liberals, and only liberals, mentioning it so often.
Then you haven’t been paying much attention. They might be past their peak now, but they were a big enough deal for a while that their Executive Chairman, Steve Bannon, became Trump’s chief strategist at the beginning of his term.
