A few years ago, I went for a long walk in western new York to meditate on the question of how to energize my church's worship service. Then Austin Miles's "Dwelling in Beulah Land" suddenly began to play in mind--a song I had heard only once decades prior. I (a UMC pastor) suggested it to my music director, Jon, a Jewish jazz band leader and he loved it. But when we introduced it the next Sunday morning, the effect was electrifying. The congregations sang it at the top of the voices, wearing big smiles on their faces.

I used to say that "In the Garden" is the hymn with the most beautiful poetic lyrics. But when I heard the mental tape recording of "Dwelling in Beulah Land" playing in my head during that long walk, I decided that these lyrics were even better. Only years later did I realize that Austin Miles composed them both! "Beulah" is a biblical term used as an image of marriage with God. So "Beulah Land" conjures the image of a 2nd honeymoon with God through a fresh commitment. Here are the lyrics:
