For a website that bills itself as intelligent discourse...this was a pretty dumb article.

I couldn't find the numbers for 2017...but in 2016, 44 unarmed people were killed by police. In a lot of nations, that would be a lot of unarmed people...since the police there almost never confront an armed citizen. Our police have a much more difficult job...and 44 isn't a lot when you consider the tens or hundreds of millions of times police confronted the public.

As for training...de-escalation is nice...but if the numbers for 2017 look anything like 2016, the vast majority of police shootings occurred when they were threatened by armed citizens. If it's a choice between shooting someone threatening your life with a weapon, or getting killed...most people would shoot in self defense.

In short, there's nothing in the article to suggest that cops in the US are particularly "brutal" nor is there anything in the data to suggest police violence of any kind is a problem.
