Well, the date has been set. This December 1st, I will be baptized into the Orthodox faith, to receive Communion on the 2nd for the first time. On that same day, my girlfriend is becoming a catechumen!

I am nearly jumping out of my skin in nerves and planning the reception afterwards. I have invited several people over, but since this is a small venue (our church is in a basement), there is a possibility that the service may be in a different Church across town.

Besides that, I am having both good news and bad news on the reception afterwards. My boss is donating money to provide a fruit dip (fast-appropriate, since my Baptism is during the fast) given through Pioneer Caterers. Unfortunately, Pioneer's other options are pricey, at least for me (honestly they are among the cheapest caterers we have here, and though not Orthodox, they service exclusively in Christian events). I don't have the backing of my parents to provide food for this, so I have few options on this. What are ways to deal with food for the fellowship afterwards?

Many years.

Food options:

Almond butter and banana sandwiches

and/or Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches

or go Arabic with:

Salad with pita bread and humus

or go American with

Meatless spaghetti with salad and garlic bread

Often people in the parish will help with the meal.

How do I explain fast-friendly food to protestants?
Just tell them it's fast food. ;)

Seriously though, tell them that it is a spiritual discipline for those who are able, with the purpose of strengthening the willpower of the one who practices it. The goal is that as we get stronger in resist that which is good (meats, dairy, etc), it is easier to resist that which is evil. I have found this to be a good introduction, and then you can add other information, if they are interested.

I can just imagine them bringing Kentucky Fried Chicken. Hey, it's fast food.

Funny because many Baptists do not consider chicken and turkey to be meat, but fowl.

how Proto said to do it. just explain that this is a spiritual discipline within the Church. and I would tell them not to worry, the Orthodox have figured out amazing things with vegetarian and vegan dishes, and I say this as a committed carnivore.

they won't go away hungry.
