Continued from: YHWH's Table (Part 3)

In our study of the previous chapters we find no mention of korbanim in reference to sin. There has been no mention of a High Priest being active with the korban. The person approaching, is the one who slays the animal. A korban does not necessarily involve blood. Korbans can be voluntary. It seems that a Korban can be independent of a sacrifice, as sacrifice (זבח) wasn't mentioned until chapter 3.

Let's continue in this study.

(CLV) Lv 4:1
Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying:

(CLV) Lv 4:2
Speak to the sons of Israel, saying, When a soul sins inadvertently, departing from any of Yahweh's instructions of what should not be done, yet does one of them:

We now have now covered three types of korbanim, one of them specifically mentioning sacrifice (זבח); and now, for the first time, we see a reference to sin.

(CLV) Lv 4:3
If the anointed priest should sin so as to bring guilt on the people, then he shall bring near for his sin with which he has sinned a flawless bull calf of the herd, to Yahweh as a sin offering.

We now see the first reference to the Anointed Priest; but he is the one who has sinned. What does he bring forth, a lamb? No, a bull.

(CLV) Lv 4:4
He will bring the young bull to the opening of the tent of appointment before Yahweh and support his hand on the head of the young bull and slay the young bull before Yahweh.

The Anointed Priest slays the bull for his own sin.

(CLV) Lv 4:5
Then the anointed priest, who is consecrated, will take some of the blood of the young bull and bring it to the tent of appointment.

(CLV) Lv 4:6
The priest will dip his finger into the blood and spatter some of the blood seven times before Yahweh, before the curtain of the holy place.

(CLV) Lv 4:7
And the priest will put some of the blood on the horns of the altar of the incense of spices before Yahweh, which is in the tent of appointment. All the rest of the blood of the young bull shall he pour out at the foundation of the altar of ascent (עלה) offering which is at the opening of the tent of appointment.

So far we haven't seen any mention of korban nor sacrifice (זבח).

(CLV) Lv 4:8
All the fat of the young bull of the sin offering shall he raise up from it, the fat covering the inwards and all the fat which is on the inwards,

(CLV) Lv 4:9
the two kidneys and the fat which is around them, at the hips, and the protuberance on the liver; along with the kidneys shall he take it away,

(CLV) Lv 4:10
just as it is being raised up from the bull of the peace offerings (Sacrifice זבח (Zebach)). Then the priest will cause them to fume on the altar of ascent offering.

The CLV takes pride in translating the same word, the same way, each time.

I caught this mistake today 7/23/22, as I do deeper study.

(CLV) Lv 4:11
Yet the hide of the young bull and all its flesh with its head and with its shanks, its inwards and its dung,

(CLV) Lv 4:12
namely all left of the young bull will he bring forth outside the camp to a clean place, to the pouring out place of the greasy ash, and he will burn it over the sticks with fire. On the pouring out place of the greasy ash shall it be burned.

It's interesting that in Leviticus 1, remains were placed near the alter; but in this case they are removed from the camp.

(CLV) Lv 1:16
Then he will take away its craw with its filthy contents and fling it beside the altar eastward at the place for the greasy ash.

(CLV) Lv 4:13
If the whole congregation of Israel, they should err inadvertently and the matter is obscured from the eyes of the assembly, and they do something departing from any of Yahweh's instructions of what should not be done, and they realize their guilt

Notice that the word "inadvertently" doesn't appear in the Hebrew Manuscripts. However, in the next verse we can see why the translators felt at liberty to add it.

(CLV) Lv 4:14
when the sin with which they have sinned becomes known, then the assembly will bring near a flawless bull calf of the herd as a sin offering and bring it before the tent of appointment.

Notice that they (plural) have sinned.

This bull, (not a lamb) is to be brought for sin that wasn't an intentional transgression of the Torah.

There is an interesting parallel in Hebrews:

(CLV) Hb 10:26
For at our sinning voluntarily after obtaining the recognition of the truth, it is no longer leaving a sacrifice concerned with sins,

(CLV) Lv 4:15
The elders of the congregation will support their hands on the head of the young bull before Yahweh, and one will slay the young bull before Yahweh.

Notice that the Elders, not the Priests, nor the Anointed Priest, slay the bull.

(CLV) Lv 4:16
And the anointed priest will bring some of the blood of the young bull to the tent of appointment.

The Anointed Priest sprinkles the blood, in places apart from the alter, as done by the Priests with the voluntary korbanim.

(CLV) Lv 4:17
The priest will dip his finger into the blood and spatter it seven times before Yahweh, before the curtain of the holy place.

(CLV) Lv 4:18
And some of the blood the priest shall put on the horns of the altar of the incense of spices before Yahweh, which is in the tent of appointment. All the rest of the blood shall he pour out at the foundation of the altar of ascent offering which is at the opening of the tent of appointment.

(CLV) Lv 4:19
All its fat shall he raise up from it, and he will cause it to fume on the altar.

(CLV) Lv 4:20
So he will do to the young bull just as he did to the young bull of the sin offering; thus shall he do to it. The priest will make a propitiatory shelter over them, and it will be pardoned (סלח) them.

Notice that this is the first time that we see the word pardon (סלח) salakh, in reference to YHWH's table, in this book.

(CLV) Lv 4:21
Then he will bring forth the young bull outside the camp and burn it just as he burned the former young bull. It is the sin offering for the assembly.

No mention of a lamb. A bull is brought forth with regards to this pardon of sin.

(CLV) Lv 4:22
When a prince sins inadvertently and does something departing from any of the instructions (מצות) of Yahweh his Elohim of what should not be done, and he realizes his guilt

Any instructions (מצות)!

(CLV) Lv 4:23
when his sin with which he has sinned is made known to him, then he will bring as his approach present, a hairy goat, a flawless male.

Again, this isn't willful transgression. For a Prince, a goat is brought forth, not a lamb.

(CLV) Lv 4:24
He will support his hand on the head of the hairy goat and slay it in the place where one should slay the ascent offering before Yahweh. It is a sin offering.

The Prince will slay it, not the Anointed Priest.

(CLV) Lv 4:25
The priest will take some of the blood of the sin offering with his finger and put it on the horns of the altar of ascent offering. The rest of its blood shall he pour out at the foundation of the altar of ascent offering.

No mention of the Anointed Priest.

(CLV) Lv 4:26
All its fat shall he cause to fume on the altar like the fat of the peace offerings (Sacrifice זבח (Zebach)). Thus the priest will make a propitiatory shelter over him for his sin, and it will be pardoned him.

CLV did it again.

Still no mention of the Anointed Priest for this sin pardon.

(CLV) Lv 4:27
If one soul of the people of the land should sin inadvertently when he does something departing from any of Yahweh's instructions (מצות) of what should not be done, and he realizes his guilt

(CLV) Lv 4:28
when his sin with which he has sinned is made known to him, then he will bring as his approach present, a hairy goat, a flawless female, for his sin with which he has sinned.

Now this scripture addresses an ordinary individual. He may bring forth a female goat, not a male lamb.

(CLV) Lv 4:29
He will support his hand on the head of the sin offering and slay the sin offering in the place of the ascent offering.

The individual slays the animal for his sin pardon.

(CLV) Lv 4:30
And the priest will take some of its blood with his finger and put it on the horns of the altar of ascent offering. All the rest of its blood shall he pour out at the foundation of the altar.

No mention of the Anointed Priest.

(CLV) Lv 4:31
All its fat shall he take away, just as the fat is taken away from the peace offerings. Then the priest will cause it to fume on the altar as a fragrant odor to Yahweh. Thus the priest will make a propitiatory shelter over him, and it will be pardoned him.

(CLV) Lv 4:32
If he should bring a sheep as his approach present for a sin offering, a flawless female shall he bring.

He may also bring forth a female sheep, not a male lamb.

(CLV) Lv 4:33
He will support his hand on the head of the sin offering and slay it as a sin offering in the place where one should slay the ascent offering.

The individual will slay it, not the Priest.

(CLV) Lv 4:34
And the priest will take some of the blood of the sin offering with his finger and put it on the horns of the altar of ascent offering. All the rest of its blood shall he pour out at the foundation of the altar.

No mention of the Anointed Priest.

(CLV) Lv 4:35
All its fat shall he take away just as the fat of the sheep is taken away from the peace offerings. Then the priest will cause them to fume on the altar on top of the fire offerings of Yahweh. Thus the priest will make a propitiatory shelter over him, for his sin with which he has sinned, and it will be pardoned him.

Still no mention of the Anointed Priest concerning the sin pardon of an individual.

In summary the only place we have thus far seen the Anointed Priest involved with a sin pardon, is that for the pardon of his own sin, or for the sin of the whole congregation. The word sacrifice (זבח) was not mentioned in this chapter.

What we see in this chapter doesn't quite fit the narrative that has been preached at all of the many churches that I have attended.

How does one sin inadvertently?

Did you know all of this before reading it?

Avoiding Unclean Ingredients in Commercial Products

If so, not all of us were raised in the truth. Have you researched the source of every ingredient, that went into every meal that you have eaten? If the answers to both of these questions is yes; this is just one example, of how we can sin without knowing.

Isn't all sin intentional?

No.

How many times can one sin inadvertently until it's intentional?

For as many times as we can execute an act in ignorance, or absent mindedness. I would not know how to count the unknown, nor what have might not have noticed nor remembered.

(CLV) Lv 4:3
If the anointed priest should sin so as to bring guilt on the people, then he shall bring near for his sin with which he has sinned a flawless bull calf of the herd, to Yahweh as a sin offering.

It appears that this is the context spoken of in Hebrews 7:27.

(CLV) Hb 7:27
Who has not necessity daily, even as the chief priests, to be offering up sacrifices (G2378) previously for their own sins, thereupon for those of the people, for this He does once for all time, offering up Himself.

θυσία thysía, thoo-see'-ah; from G2380; sacrifice (the act or the victim, literally or figuratively):—sacrifice.

G2378 - thysia - Strong's Greek Lexicon (KJV)

One can't very well sin; if he has become the victim.

Isaiah might provide us with greater context:

(CLV) Isa 53:6
All of us, like a flock, we stray; Each to his own way, we turn around, Yet Yahweh Himself causes to come upon Him. the depravity of us all.

(CLV) Ro 12:1
I am entreating you, then, brethren, by the pities of God, to present your bodies a sacrifice, living, holy, well pleasing to God, your logical divine service,
