Today in church we sang a hymn I'd never heard before written by Biblical scholar D.A. Carson (I had no idea he was a hymnwriter, too) and what a blessing it was. Partly because I absolutely loved the hymn and partly because I learned that the days of great hymns have not passed. The hymn was called "In This Rebel World." Has anyone else here ever heard it or sung it?

Yes, I've heard one recently that stunned me. I can't for the life of me remember the name of it, but the words were powerful and theological, and the tune was a more traditional-sounding celtic-inspired one.

I was stopped in my tracks by this hymn, and thought, "Wow, how did I miss that one growing up in church all these years?" So I looked it up online, and it turns out it was brand-spankin' new! I was surprised and delighted.

Now I just wish I could remember what it was!

Have not heard of it. I have heard of DA Carson, though.

Perhaps it was one of his. There's a link to the lyrics of his songs, but it's a Power Point, and I can't copy and paste the link, so I'll give the link to the Yahoo search page and you can click the link from there. It's the first link on the page.

I've also enjoyed some of the new tunes placed over old songs. This keeps the richness of hymns while incorporating a tune that is easier to memorize and flows better (in some respects).

If I'm already familiar with a hymn with an old tune, I tend to be annoyed with a new one, but there's a hymn or two we've sung in church where I think we were singing a new tune, but I never heard the old one, so I was none the wiser, and I could enjoy it. LOL I do love some of the old tunes, though, of some old hymns. One of my favorite hymns, because of the lyrics and the tune, is Charles Wesley's And Can It Be. I don't know if anyone has tried to change that one, but I'd really hate it if I had to sing a song like that with a new tune.

Hadn't heard of it before - looked up the words.....

http://tollelege.wordpress.com/2006/02/20/in-this-rebel-world-by-da-carson/

here's another modern hymn.... we're thinking about doing this one at my (very modern p&w) church:
http://frogg.freeshell.org/wshp/lyrics/How_Deep_the_Father's_Love.php

and another - we did this one last Sunday
http://www.seeklyrics.com/lyrics/Newsboys/In-Christ-Alone.html
(sorry, this lyrics page is not that good, the verses aren't written out very nicely....)

And this one is an older one (but not "old") and a favorite of mine. I can't find a copyright on the net right now, so I'm putting the lyrics here:

IM ABANDONED

I'm abandoned to the Captain
Of the mighty host of heaven
And I pledge Him my allegiance

Till the earth beholds His kingdom.

We've been raised for such a time
History comes to the finish line
And the saints who've gone before
Watch to see us end our course

I'm abandoned to the Captain
Of the mighty host of heaven
And I pledge Him my allegiance
Till the earth beholds His kingdom.

So lay aside each weight that binds
Enter in the harvest time
Until the kingdoms of this world
Become the kingdoms of our Christ

I'm abandoned to the Captain
Of the mighty host of heaven
And I pledge Him my allegiance
Till the earth beholds His kingdom.

Oh cool! I couldn't find the lyrics in a regular format where I could just link them like that. We sing "How Deep The Father's Love For Us" at our church. I like that one, too.

In this rebel world where we fear the light,
All our gods must be domesticated, tame;
But the Sov’reign Lord, who sees through the night
Is not threatened by pretensions built on shame.
In majestic splendor God rules throughout our days:
He is holy in his deeds and wise in all his ways.
Mighty Babylon, and the Third Reich too,
Join the dust of empires that have passed away.
Full of strutting pride, mouthing boasts untrue,
They lie crushed before the God whose word holds sway.
Surely all the nations are dust upon the scales,
So with whom will you compare this God whose will prevails?
Not the patriarchs, not the priestly clans,
Not the wise in all their learning glimpsed the cross;
Not the royal court, not the zealot bands,
Thought that God would buy back rebels at such cost.
Who has comprehended the wisdom of the Lord?
For the grandeur of his plans our God must be adored!
Who will take the scroll in the Sov’reign’s hand,
Break the seals and bring God’s purposes to pass?
While we wait in fear at what God has planned,
From the throne the Lion roars — and death has passed.
Sing to Christ the Conqu’ror a new song full of praise,
For the triumph of the Lamb means God will have his way.
I am he that liveth, that liveth and was dead;
And behold, I am alive, alive forevermore.

Is that it?

That's the one. And it's even better when sung! Whadya think?
