This was originally a response to another thread but it was posted in the wrong area so I posted it here:

Good question. I believe that the Bible is free from error but I also believe that women should be accepted into church leadership. Rather than believing the Bible has error, I believe that people misunderstand and misinterpret the Bible. This can come to light when we see varying contradictions. Women have been in leadership in the Bible and yet there are those few verses that make us question this very issue. I believe we need to see all scripture in context and see the truth of it. After all, it was Jesus (God) who stood up regarding the woman who was being stoned and the woman washing Jesus feet but man (people) who were in err.

Typically, people don’t want to know the truth if it means they will have to change. The Word speaks of ears itching to hear.

    2Tim.4
    1. [3] For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itchingears;
Women have a central role in teaching other women as I understand it. The Bible Speaks of women prophets and also great women of Faith. I’m not anyone’s judge but myself.

    1Cor.11

    1. [31] For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged.
All you can do is pray about it.

So, this is how you can keep your belief about inerrancy and still do whatever you like? Interesting.

No, I don't believe I can do whatever I like. On the contrary, I think out of our (people) own desire to feel comfortable in our set place we hold on to views / interpretations that 'may' be false. I think we need to examine and really ask ourselves why we believe what we believe and is it really what God wants and is saying or is it out of my own discomfort that I'm hanging on to people-made ideas / misinterpretations rather than what the Bible really means.

The inerrency aspect was part of the other thread this first post originally responded to.

IF the topic is actually as stated--women in leadership--not, women in the ordained ministry, then there probably is some connection between the negative side of the argument and Biblical inerrancy.

Was either of those women a leader in the church? I think the answer is No.

If it is No, then neither of them sheds any light on the answer to the question before us.

Why do you think that your interpretation is not false? There are so many places saying that women should be submitted to men, so how can women be in leadership over men? Does not make sense, unless you really want it to be so and so you "interpret" it.

If we look to the spiritual as a reflection of the physical. It is obvious that men are physically stronger than women. If women were as strong as men are physically, statistically there would be at least 25 women winning Superbowl quarterbacks. There aren't.

If the spiritual is a reflection of the physical, then men are spiritually stronger than women. We cannot rule that out. It may well be that it takes that additional spiritual strength to be a priest.

I think parts of the bible can be called sexist if you apply the current definitions. The bigger question is, is it wrong. Why is there so much effort to sanitize what the bible says so people can feel more comfortable about it or themselves?

I could flip the question around and say... why are you so eager to believe women should be subservient to men? Were there not women in leadership / valued roles in the Bible. Why would this topic make us feel uncomfortable.

Not sure what "subservient" means. But women should be submitted as the Bible says.

Not all men are created the same. Nor all women created the same. Neither am I sure why we should consider physical attributes to being equated to spiritual / intellectual attributes. Separate issues.

Did you ever consider that maybe these policies were put in place due to the weakness of men, specifically, lust? Maybe it was/is for men to keep from being distracted...you know how they say "men are more visual". I think this is, at least, part of it.

Physical attributes, spiritual attributes, intellectual attributes, some of us have all three.

For me, personally, the issue is not to feel more comfortable by attempting to sanitize scripture. Rather I think the more important question is, are we as christians stifling the work of the Holy Spirit. Please note, I think God is bigger than us and can work miracles but I think of the scripture that says:

    I Thessalonians 5: 19-20
19 Do not quench the Spirit. 20 Do not treat prophecies with contempt 21 but test them all; hold on to what is good, 22 reject every kind of evil.

I did not say anything about intellectual attributes. I only hypothesized regarding spiritual attributes. In sum, those attributes cannot be ruled out.

Here's a thought... Not sure if the above is pro all male leadership or against all male leadership... :)

Men should be in leadership (Pastor, Elder, Deacon), women should be in leadership (Sunday School Leader, Chief Cook, Head Cleaner-Upper). There are enough leadership positions to go round.

The idea that Scripture can be trumped at any time by a claim that "the Holy Spirit has changed his mind" troubles me. Just sayin'
