Is this the start of women's rights? I would to own a bumper sticker saying First at the Tomb with women there.
An interesting topic. The Lord prophesized that man would rule over women. It was one of the consequences of the original sin:Is this the start of women's rights? I would to own a bumper sticker saying First at the Tomb with women there.
Actually, God ordained it. It wasn't an inevitable result of sin. It was a direct result of Eve tempting Adam.An interesting topic. The Lord prophesized that man would rule over women. It was one of the consequences of the original sin:
I think the Lord enjoys seeing women stand up for their rights.
No, the Lord doesn't play favorites. Men are no better than women.Actually, God ordained it. It wasn't an inevitable result of sin. It was a direct result of Eve tempting Adam.
Pridefully standing for ones "rights" is not what God asks us to do... to have a humble, meek and contrite spirit is.
Who said anything about men being better than women? The curse placed upon Adam was to till the soil in sweat his whole life just to live... the curse God placed on Eve was that she should have difficult childbirth and be ruled over (subject to) her husband. No, the Lord doesn't play favorites. Yes, that was the curse, but the Lord didn't will those things to happen. He just knew that they would. It is not his desire that women be subject to men.Who said anything about men being better than women? It could be that it was just customary that women typically prepared and wrapped bodies for burial. It seems that given the approaching Sabbath, Jesus' body wasn't prepared according to custom. So the women go back after the Sabbath with oil and perfume.
There's nothing abnormal about the women being present. What is probably abnormal is using them as key eyewitness testimony to an extraordinary claim about resurrection. You can see the gospel authors wrestling with this as well as they all emphasize that "the women saw where he was laid" (Matt 27:61//Mk 15:41, 15:47//Lk 23:49, 23:55) You can hear them answering an objection in the background: women's testimony wasn't really reliable...they must have forgotten or not known where he was buried.
The presence of the women at the tomb wasn't abnormal, but it seems it may have been uncomfortable yet unavoidable that they were the first key witnesses to the empty tomb and resurrection. The gospels seem to answer objections that may have arisen because the women were the key witnesses: why the women where there (to prepare the body properly or to "look at" the tomb), why they body hadn't been prepared properly (the Sabbath was fast approaching), they must have forgotten or not known where he was buried (no, they were present when he was put in the tomb by Joseph).
