Before Thursday, federal employees received pay for 10 federal holidays, 13 sick days and 20 vacation days per year on average.

Most people have federal holidays off. As for sick and vacation, I get around 20 days total, so they have me beat there. I work in a VA hospital where a large percentage of employees are vets and have carried over their military service into federal service. That drives up the number of vacation days that they get.

One thing to consider is that federal pay is significantly lower than what someone can make in the private sector. For example, the local IT department makes GS-9 pay starting at $53,691. My previous job in 2015 started in the $65,000 range. The trade off is that once they get their 20 years of federal service, they get federal retirement.

Sick leave can only be used during sickness. They can be carried over within certain limits but they are not a given. Federal employees start with 13 days vacation for the first five years or so. That is a lot of holidays but do they really get all of them off?
