It’s proven that people who live in warmer climates live quite a bit longer. I think life expectancy in Florida is about seven or eight years longer than in Northern states. That being said I really wish that I could go south for the winter. When it’s warmer I am a lot more active and I lose a lot of weight. When it’s warmer I feel better and my health is better and I have less anxiety. Unfortunately I am not financially stable enough to afford a winter home. The winter is coming here soon and I really hate it. I wish that I could go somewhere warmer. A few years ago I spent my winters in Florida and Arizona but I had to live out of my car. I still loved the warm weather though. I really wish that I could go South. It’s going to be 81 degrees tomorrow in Miami and 86 in Yuma. Here where I am tomorrow will be 44 degrees. I really like to walk outside so I hate this cold and the winter blast is coming soon.

Alabama and Mississippi have a worse life expectancy than New York and Minnesota.

I wonder about the accuracy of this Wikipedia article. These aren’t the same numbers I have heard in the past. Honestly I would not go to Alabama or Mississippi. I have traveled through those states and I don’t care for them. They are poorer states and that is probably why the life expectancy is lower there. In the past I have heard that life expectancy in New York is 74; so I am confused by these numbers that you provided.

You may need to develop better research skills. Part of a person’s health is linked to dietary choices. Nitrite processed meats like bacon, ham, bologna and hotdogs increase your risk of getting cancer. Eating red meat increases risk of cancer. People who eat diets high in fat and cholesterol are more likely to get heart disease. Exercise is important. Avoiding a high salt, high sugar diet is important. Some people who lived long avoided smoking, alcohol and caffeine. Air pollution is bad for your health. Morbidly obese people died earlier.

I am well aware of what is required in order to maintain health.

The fact of the matter is that warmer climates have been proven to lead to longer lifespan. Vitamin D from the Sun is extremely good for maintaining health. The heat also increases blood flow which is why people who use saunas live longer.

I moved to Florida in 2012. I live in a 55+ community. It seems like people here are dying all the time. I worked on the security committee. The chairman and his assistant have died. Neighbors have died. My neighbor across the street got cancer and moved back to Vermont to die. Jesus is the way to eternity. Jesus said, “Do not worry about tomorrow, tomorrow will take care of itself.” Matthew 6:34.

Many people wished they were in better locations, but have to put up with things where they are. I am not sure I could find a better location if I tried. My parents are in long term care 45 mins away and I must stay. Home insurance and hospitalizations cost more in Florida. The cost of real estate is soaring. There is black mold and toxic algae. Snowbirds forgot to leave their air conditioners on all summer and came back in the autumn to find their homes full of mold and mildew. Unless I turned my A/C way down, my books stank from mildew. There are above ground termites. Florida is lightening capitol of the US. They say lightening rods are not practical in this sandy soil. Citrus groves have been destroyed by the citrus greening disease that started in China. I can not plant an orange tree as I tried then it soon got the disease. Hurricane season makes people nervous as global warming intensified. People retired here and were doing fine until they got the medical bills that aging brings. It is sad.

It is nice to go to the pool and get a tan in November. My pipes will not freeze. I do not skid on black ice. I saw a sign by the road, “You do not have to shovel sunshine.”

Sounds like you may have a slight case of SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder). HERE is some advice on how to deal with it. My favorite is to take a warm winter vacation. Even going to say Arizona for a week could do wonders.

I have the same problem (live in the PNW). Every year around January or February I go to Tucson for a week. It doesn't have to cost much and does wonders to wake up to warm sunshine in the morning! I don't need to be gone all winter (I like the snow too.) but getting away for a few days is great therapy. I thought about trying the "Happy Lights" they don't cost much, but haven't yet. Since I haven't been traveling because of Covid, maybe I'll try them this year. (I'll tell my wife it would make a great Christmas gift!)

I have went to Yuma for a couple of winters and I loved it.

On a side note, do you know what the crime rate is in Tucson? I believe that I read somewhere that it is horrendous.

I don't know the crime rate, we have never had any problems. We usually go travel around Bisbee, (great turquoise mine.) Phoenix (seems more crime ridden) and a town called Tubac. Tubac is a tourist town, but it is so hot there that it is only "open" in the winter. The summers would melt your tires!

Sightings Over Sixty: Does Cold Weather Help You Live Longer?

"According to an article in U. S. News, you are most likely to live to age 100 if you reside in North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa or Nebraska. These states are indeed cold, but they also share another common denominator. They are all Midwestern states where people may have old-fashioned Midwestern values such as hard work and clean living."

I don’t buy it. Hawaii was the state with the highest life expectancy in the Wikipedia article that was posted and California was number 2. If people lived longer in colder climates that would not be the case.

I have lived in California, Arizona, Florida, and Las Vegas and I love the warm weather in the winter in those places.

Florida is a really nice place and I would love to go there again.
