Seventh-day Adventists have claimed that they were the remnant church of Rev. 12:17, because they follow the Spirit of Prophecy and have the inpired writings Ellen G. White. Ellen White was given visions and inspiration which is seen as the testimony of Jesus, according to Rev 19:10, as it refers to the manifestation of the Spirit of Prophecy among the remnant. Here are the three texts that most point to as the designation of the remnant:

Rev 12:17 And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.

Rev 19:10 And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.

Rev 14:12 Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.

There are some who attack the the claim made by Seventh-day Adventists that they are the only body of Christians who have the spirit of prophecy, but what is there purpose. Is to lay aside Ellen G. White as a messenger of God or to obscure the Spirit of Prophecy as the Holy Spirit opens our eyes in the last days. They want to destroy that which points to the Adventist movement which has accepted the Spirit of Prophecy light on end times as the remant. Those who fight against it feel they are right, by are helping only hide the plans of the Evil one as they can then resist more powerfully the arguments to 'come out of Babylon and its daughters' by obscuring the Spirit of Prophecy and its message.....

The remnant are a special people in the last days as we read in the following:
"..The manifestation of the gift of prophecy is accorded a prominent position among the marks of identification of the remnant church. It is one of the two major indications of the identity of the remnant. “And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.” Revelation 12:17. The attitude of the remnant church toward the commandments is indicative of its attitude toward the entire Bible, and the gift of prophecy is intended to aid in gaining a right understanding of the Bible and in developing right relationships to it. “God has seen fit in this manner to bring the minds of His people to His word, to give them a clearer understanding of it.”—Testimonies for the Church, vol. 5, p. 663. The Bible and the spirit of prophecy writings serve different purposes, but they serve as a unit to convey God's will to His people. “God is leading out a people and establishing them upon the one great platform of faith, the commandments of God and the testimony of Jesus.”—Ibid., vol. 3, p. 447..." http://www.whiteestate.org/

The pillars that the remnant hold true to is "commandments of God and the testimony of Jesus" and the evil one wants to wipe out these pillars and attack those who follow these foundations of truth and call out those in Babylon to come out of her. Many are fiercely trying to pull down the pillars of truth and change the concept of who are the remnant so they can falsely try to put the distinct mantle of the 'remnant' on whatever path they decide on, not God.

At the right time, God raised up a people who came from all denominations (a remnant) to preach the gospel in its fullness, 'the everlasting gospel', to the whole world. This is the remnant that the dragon would persecute at the end of time, those:
which keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus Christ. Revelation 12:17

Here are brought to the fore the attributes of this remnant which rouse the ire of Satan, obedience to God's commandments and the testimonies of Jesus Christ. The Reformation had restored faith in the merits of Jesus Christ as the only means of salvation, but the importance of the law and obedience to God as well as the significance of the High Priestly ministry of Jesus were largely misunderstood. The fullness of the gospel and ministry of Jesus, together with the prophetic chain of events from the fall to final restoration, were truths which were to be proclaimed in the final hours of probation by a remnant responding to the call of grace. To this end, the testimony of Jesus or the spirit of prophecy was restored to assist in the unraveling of truth. The attributes of the remnant are so clearly defined in Scripture, the remnant should base its beliefs on the whole scriptures, which are the recorded will of God:
All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness. 2 Timothy 3:16 NKJV

In the light of the almost universal apostasy, which according to the Scriptures, would exist at the end of time, it is also logical that the remnant would constitute a minority in spite of its universality. There is only one movement, which meets all the criteria, and that is the Seventh-day Adventist Church, which arises on the stage of history at precisely the right time to fulfill prophecy. Only the Seventh-day Adventist Church preaches the three angels' messages to the entire world and for this purpose, the Seventh-day Adventist church is the single most widespread Protestant denomination in the world. Moreover, the Seventh-day Adventist Church traces its roots to the unsealing of the scroll of Daniel and the great advent awakening. The movement preaches the everlasting gospel 'saved by the blood of the Lamb together with obedience to His precepts', and points to the creator of all things as the only one worthy of worship. The Church officially upholds the creation account as the only true source of origins and since God's memorial of creation is the Seventh-day Sabbath, they endeavour to keep the Sabbath, thereby acknowledging the seal of authority of the creator.

Only the Seventh-day Adventist church complies with all the attributes of Gods remnant as given in the Scriptures. Satan may counterfeit one or the other of the attributes, but he cannot counterfeit them all. The Adventist church:

  1. Arises at the right time
  2. Preaches the three angels' messages
  3. Has a worldwide distribution
  4. Keeps the commandments of God. (Rev 12:17; 14:12; 22:14)
  5. Has the faith of Jesus. (Rev 14:12) They have a Christ-centered religion and believe that through trust in God, the believer will obtain grace to overcome as Christ overcame. (1 John 5:4; Rev 12:11; 1 John 2:6; 3:3,7)
  6. Has the testimony of Jesus (Rev 12:17) which is the spirit of prophecy, (Rev 19:10)
.....Excerpts From The Chruch in ProphecybyProfessor Walter J. Veith Phd.

The mission of the Remnant movement is to call a people out of apostasy or Baylon and point them to the Lamb of God, and allegiance to His authority. But the Evil One doesnt want that, so he puts it into the minds of some to go after those who have these beliefs and constitute the remant because they accept the Spirit of Prophecy as given by the Holy Spirit and the messenger, Ellen White.

There are some who attack the the claim made by Seventh-day Adventists that they are the only body of Christians who have the spirit of prophecy, but what is there purpose.

Should not the first question asked be are those claims that Adventists are the only body of Christians who have the spirit of prophecy true or not? That would probably be the most useful way of determining what their purpose is.

The problem with your analysis is that it is purely based on a specific denominational subjective view. For example the spirit of prophecy is used completely differently in the Adventist church then in the history of the Christian church.
The list you gave is also completely subjective:

  1. Arises at the right time
How is that, there is nothing in the Bible about a new denomination arising at some distant future. Even to come up with what you call the right time you have to assume things such as day for a year in prophecies. You have to assume starting dates which are clearly artificially made. True in the history of the Christian church day for a year was at times a popular idea but when the use failed in every case it naturally fell out of popularity, it simply did not work.
  1. Preaches the three angels' messages
Practically every denomination uses the Bible texts that you identify as the three angels messages. We can look back at the early Church Fathers and see them use those texts, Calvin, Luther, Wesley, Spurgeon etc all use those texts. Now they may not have the meaning that Adventists pour into them such as the way Adventists seem to see their doctrines in the three angels messages such as the sabbath even though the texts do not say anything about the Sabbath. Worshiping God is far more then sabbath keeping.
  1. Has a worldwide distribution
This one is silly because the church for most of it's history did not have world wide distribution, yet even when they were only in the U.S you can see that they still thought they were the remnant group.
  1. Keeps the commandments of God. (Rev 12:17; 14:12; 22:14)
Again the commandments of God is speaking of individuals it is not speaking of a corporation. It also assumes that the commandments of God cannot be kept unless the corporation or group professes the seventh day sabbath.
  1. Has the faith of Jesus. (Rev 14:12) They have a Christ-centered religion and believe that through trust in God, the believer will obtain grace to overcome as Christ overcame. (1 John 5:4; Rev 12:11; 1 John 2:6; 3:3,7)
This is about the only one that other Christians would accept, though with reservations about what many in the SDA church mean by being overcomers, since so many see that in a form of last generation perfection.
  1. Has the testimony of Jesus (Rev 12:17) which is the spirit of prophecy, (Rev 19:10)
Again this hangs upon the peculiar Adventist interpretation that their dead prophet represents the spirit of prophecy in some way different from those who hold to the writings of the Bible, also written by dead prophets.

This type of presentation only feeds those who already have those beliefs, it is not objective and not even realistic it is more in line with propaganda.

The true question is will the remnant be anyone who believes and follows the message that the Spirit of Prophecy gives and accepts the other attributes of the remnant such as those who follow the commandments of God, etc.., this I believe to be true as God in His love and mercy wants to include not excude. The remnant will be those who follow the Testimony of Jesus which has a special purpose and end time prophecy to prepare those worship God not another and who follow Jesus and God's commandments.

Revelation 19:10
And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.
Revelation 12:17
And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.

Now as a whole Babylon and the daughter churches certainly do not qualify on this point at all because they follow the "traditions of man" and that which comes from pagan practices, so as the SDA corporately has accepted what constitutes the remnant, the church is the 'remnant' in that context. But at the end, anyone who accepts the testimony of Jesus Christ (Spirit of Prophecy message) and the other attributes of the remnant can/will become part of the remnant.

So the Adventist movement has already met the criteria as the remnant and they are definitely calling out those in Babylon to come out. But I feel there will be a event that clearly deliniates the choice and makes everyone choose between worhiping God, following the testimony of Jesus Christ (Spirit of Prophecy message) and the commandments of God and other attributes of the remnant as a whole.

Anyone who rejects it, will most certainly not be part of the remnant, and thus anyone who fights against it or has already rejected it has put themselves in spiritual danger to say the least.

So the bottom line is, corporately the church has met the criteria and is the remnant church and singly those who follow and accept what scripture puts forth definining the attributes are or become part of the remnant.

Here is something I came across that even Satan knew what she had been given and tried to stop her directly...

"For several weeks after she got home she could not feel much. The children touched her arm, but she didn't know it. Her husband poured cold water on her head, trying to help her regain her sense of feeling. She didn't even know the water was there. Her balance was upset, too, and she staggered as she walked. Today we would call this kind of attack a "stroke."

In the midst of all this, something kept bothering her. It was the angel's command during that last vision. "Write it down, Ellen. Write it down. Satan will try to stop you, but write it down. Angels will help you."

All at once it became clear to her. Satan had tried to stop her. God hadn't let Satan kill her. She was still alive. She must write the vision.

At first she was so weak that she could only write one page a day and then she had to rest three days after that! As she kept at it the strength increased and she was able to write more. Soon she was writing 14 pages at a sitting, the words just rolling onto the paper.

That June, during another vision, the Lord showed Ellen White that Satan had tried to kill her before she could write the story of his great rebellion against heaven. The angels had surrounded her and saved her life. She could see right then that publishing this book wasn't going to be easy. And she was right...."SOP Sabbath 2004: Story
