  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Let me ask what draws you here Squirrel? What is it that lures an atheist to seek debate with Christians? I believe you told me your atheism is not set in stone and you are open to proof.

Gerry, be nice, Squirrel hasn't offended anyone that I am aware of, just the fact that Squirrel is asking why, is an indication that there is a void and his belief or lack thereof isn't complete, sometimes we all feel this way whether we are atheist or theist.

Squirrels name may still be written in the book of life, it is possible God may see fit to touch Squirrel at a later time, just maybe God needs Squirrel to take a journey into the concept of disbelief.

Squirrel, while you don't believe now and you may never believe, keep up the search!

Of course I am open to proof. But what a christian uses as proof is basically faith. And as I said before, that is not going to cut it. May make a few of the christians here angry, but hey... that is the way it is. I believe faith to be nothing more than wishful thinking.

As to what "lures" me here.... I like to talk to others about many different things, theology, religion, belief, philosophy and other topics. I was alerted to this board by another board I am a regular on. I also enjoy reading debates between believers and non-believers. The debate thing is fun every so often. But it does get old, I see the same old precanned arguments from both sides for the most part... old. I am firm in my atheism, I really do not need the debate thing.

 

 

There is no void Sean. My lack of belief is complete. As to "god" in the deistic natural sense, I would have to say I am agnostic, to say anything else would be a lie. For the christian god I am a solid atheist, no doubts to this one. I could easliy walk away from the forum, and my webpages and my radio show and other things within the realms of religion and the like... and not miss it in any way shape or form. Seriously.

 

As for the offending of others... I am a very reciprocal person. I give as I get. And I do not bandy words when I give. I will call a spade a spade, and then some. Regardless of whether that person is on the net, or on my face. It is just how I am. Partially from my military days I would imagine. When someone comes across as anything less than a rational person... well I have had messages deleted here before. That is just how I am.  


Also I notice that one verse a lot of christians seem to ignore is 1 Peter 3:15



 

Sure. I will always look for the answers. But, I am convinced they do not lie within the bounds of christianity.

Well, I believe that "once saved, always saved". and if Squirrel from his heart truly accepted Christ as his personal Lord and Savior, then he's saved. And Christ may still "do good work" in him. Whether or not Satan has decieved him is of no concern. Where the saved are concerned, Satan can only hurt us and take us out of the fight, not take us off God's "team".

That's the way I see it anyway....

Really? are you really being honest and objective with this? 100% sure? I think the best that you could do is say that you don't "believe" its real. You can say you don't believe that God is real, Jesus, Buddha, whomever. But honestly, it sounds foolish to say that you are 100% certain. How can you be 100% certain? How can you even be certain that you exist? How can you be 100% certain of anything, unless your own mind was the source and basis of all truth?

Well my personal experiences have told me this is so. And sionce I have a personal realtionship with myself, I have knowledge this is the truth.

Now, can you say with 100% certainty, the "christian" god exists? Would it not be foolish as well to say this? If a person cites personal experiences as any indication of knowledge in this matter... then what?

As far as a god goes... no one can prove it either way it goes.

 

Why does this feel like it is heading into a "you would have to know everything there is to know before you can say there is no god" type of discussion?

well, i am glad that you at least admit that.  you can't know for sure that GOd doesn't exist.  i can't know for sure.  i can't even know for sure that i am sitting here in boston, ma typing you this response.  the more i think about it, i assume a lot...but i don't KNOW anything for certain.  i can't even prove to myself that i can think...after all, i can't see my own thoughts.   remember that you can't hide behind "my personal experiences" to say that GOd isn't real.  you choose to believe he isn't, just as i choose to believe he is.

God is perfectly just, and yet he sentences the imperfect humans he created to infinite suffering in hell for finite sins. Clearly, a limited offense does not warrant unlimited punishment. God's sentencing of the imperfect humans to an eternity in hell for a mere mortal lifetime of sin is infintely more unjust than this punishment. The absurd injustice of this infinite punishement is even greater when we consider that the ultimate source of human imperfection is the God who created them. A perfectly just God who sentences his imperfect creation to infinite punishment for finite sins is impossible.

Life in Christ is different from a life without Christ. We get a taste of what it is to be with Christ in heaven when we truly believe in Him and are given the Holy Spirit. It is a love relationship, that no matter what circumstances we're in, God loves us and He's continuously at work with us. It is to be able to face the world's fear and danger through Jesus, and find real joy and peace in Him.

Everlasting Life with GOd, is not the same as on this earth. God created you. He knows EXACTLY what will give you joy for the rest of eternity. He created you for that purpose. He created you also to enjoy him forever. Everything good that we have a small glimpse of now comes from Him. Love, Peace, Joy, Happiness, Faithfulness, Fellowship, Forgiveness, etc etc etc. you asked, why should you believe in Jesus? because Jesus and his Father call you to happiness and joy and purpose beyond your wildest dreams for all eternity.

In an technicality, the "wages of sin is death." Therefore when dealing a onetime punishment of death, the same effect takes place. A finite offense with infinite consequences, gets a finite punishment with infinite consequences. Not too hard a concept if worded right.

And squirrel (since you know Bible Basics) I'm assuming you need an Elijah experience?

You need to believe in Jesus because you were made to worship God. Like my pastor said, we all were made with a God consciousness in us. If you're not worshipping God, you'll worship other things - money, self, other people.

Worship can also mean something you focus on, put a lot of importance on, make life-altering decisions based on.. Your love of that thing/person can be the compass that guides your life.

Ask yourself honestly (just by yourself), who occupies that throne-room in your heart? And is that thing worth it? Is it perfect? Will it let you down? Will you one day look back and think....it wasn't worth it....it was meaningless, meaningless.

I believe in Jesus because I needed meaning in my life. When I got to know Him, I believed He is real. So now , I believe in Him because He is real and I need Him.

The only real distinguishing matter between heaven and earth is accepting or rejecting Jesus's gift of salvation for you. So if you reject this Jesus, then you reject God. If you reject God, seeing as how He is God Almighty and can do whatever He wants, He is perfectly just in punishing you forever. He cannot accept anything less than Holy. And once you sin (which invariably you will-"all have sineed") the only way to become holy again is to "pay off your debt." the wages of sin being death, you must pay with death, either your's or an acceptable sacrifice. The only acceptable sacrifice now is God Himself who gave Himself for the salvation of the world. it's still your choice either way. Free will allows that. And along with free will invariably comes the decisions to reject or accept God. Both choices must be invariably (sorry i use the same word over again but it works) be chosen. This would justify God allowign some to choose Him, some to reject Him.
