There probably are some Latinos leaving Christianity for Islam, but more have left Catholicism for Pentecostal churches. What this shows us seems to be that the faith that almost all of these people started with--Roman Catholicism--has been jettisoned by them after they reached the safety and diversity that characterizes the USA but is not typical of the countries that most of them or their parents came from.

Incidentally, it's always fun to notice how publications with an agenda try to push some notion but also avoid being caught in a verifiable fib.

To read the headline here...and read most of the article following, one would think that some migration of American Latinos to Islam is a really big development, complete with the obligatory photos, of course. But then we get to the fact, included almost in passing, that the phenomenon being written about involves LESS THAN 1% of American Latinos!

A significant number of Blacks and Latinos in prisons identify Islam as their religion.

We have a word for those people in Spanish: Malinchistas.

In Mexico there are less than 5,000 Muslims total (less than 0.01% of the population), despite having an Arab-descended population of over a million. I know Mexico is definitely not all of Latin America, but it does shed light onto how most people view Islam. If I recall correctly, the largest single population of Muslims in Latin America is in Argentina, where they (not surprisingly) have a much larger Arab-descended population (over 3 million), though the majority of those people are Christian, just like in all of Latin America. Nevertheless, Islam represents roughly 5% of Argentina's population. (But it's very new; the first mosques there were not even built until 1983.)

This is not some wave, and if it were it would be because of community-internal factors (I suspect more related to life in the USA than anything, as that's where the story is coming from), rather than something to do with Latinos suddenly being attracted to Islam as a religion. You don't name your cities Matamoros for nothing! (Actually it's from an appearance of the St. James the Apostle in Spain, but the point is that they keep it that way.)

If the life of cultural Catholicism and the abandonment of all actual authority and community in the modern Roman Catholic Church to which the majority belong is not fulfilling (and I understand why they'd feel that way; I was Roman Catholic too, so I've been there), they are far more likely to turn to Pentecostalism or something else than to Islam. Notice how the figure in your link was an ex-gang guy? Yeah. That's because Islam does its best recruitment from among criminals.

A growing number of Latinos are also turning to Orthodox Christianity. Undoubtedly more than are turning to Islam (particularly if we look globally, as Orthodoxy is arguably stronger in Guatemala and Bolivia among indigenous people than among Latinos in the USA).

    Which form of Islam?

Conversion to Islam in U.S. prisons - Wikipedia

If you look at many of the notable converts, it'd be pretty clear that the version of Islam they're converting to isn't any of the longstanding traditional forms:

    upload_2019-12-4_17-17-36.png
...most of these guys wouldn't fare too well in the eyes of the government of an Islamic state given some of their other lifestyle preferences.

If you look at the teachings of Malcolm X with regards to his view of Islam, that will explain why many in minority communities see it as a viable group to join.

When you have an environment (like prisons) where there are a disproportionate amount of minorities locked up, many times...for victimless crimes thanks to over-prosecution by the state, a lot of Malcolm's messages are going to sound pretty appealing to people in that situation.

It's not 'condescending' to note that Islam does well with prisoners. I didn't write the Wikipedia article on conversion to Islam in U.S. prisons, but you can read there about the disproportionately high percentage of prisoners of that faith relative to the outside (18% in prison, compared to 1% outside.)

If I wanted to post in the trashy way that you have I could say with a fair bit of empirical backing that your religion attracts criminals and gangsters in U.S. prisons. Maybe you should come up with a better prophet to begin with.

The article's observations are not surprising. America is a more religiously diverse society and we have tended to have a tradition of spiritual seekers, going all the way back to New England Unitarians and Transcendentalists. This is different from traditional Latin countries, which tended to have religious hegemony by the Catholic Church.

So what is really happening here is that Latinos are assimilating into the overall society and embracing its values and moving away from traditional values.

Islam, like Evangelical Christianity, is often presented as a simple way to deal with life, and so is appealing to people facing psychological and existential pressures. But all sorts of religious conversions can be represented in prisons. For instance, Jarvis Jay Masters is an award-winning author on death row in California. He converted to Vajrayana Buddhism decades ago after he was accused of participating in a plot to kill a prison guard and sentenced to death.

American Muslims actually supported gay marriage far more than white evangelical Christians. There's even a gay imam in the Washington, DC. area now.

There are many American Muslims that are educated, cosmopolitan people. Dr. Mehmet Oz and Reza Ashlan, for instance. Not all Muslims are religious fundamentalists.

That's odd, since I didn't write that. That was written by another poster, "Grasping The After Wind".

I guess all us non-believers in Muhammad are the same, right?

In other words, "I'm wrong, but I'm still right."

And there wouldn't have been any replies from me to you if you hadn't made that mistake in the first place. I was only alerted to your reply because you quoted my post, and I had no way of knowing that this was in error until you showed it to be. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
