Hi all,

So before I start, a little background on this. Long story short, in Bible Class when I was in High School a few years ago, one of my classmates stated that Mary was nothing special, and God could have chosen anyone to bear Christ.

So please forgive me if I sound ignorant in discussing, theology isn't my strong suit at this point. :D

With that said, I was thinking today while at work, certainly something stuck out about Mary for her to be chosen. So I wanted to ask the GT/Mariology scholars about this. :)

I agree with the second half of her statement

God is sovereign, God operates with freedom
He could have choose anyone to have been the Theotokos

that being said, while God COULD have chosen anyone
looking at scripture, and tradition, we can see that the Blessed Virgin is special

the Bible shows us how special the Arc of the Covenant was
it was covered in gold, greatly valued, greatly esteemed, treated as holy
even touching it was punishable by death

the Arc carried "types" of Christ, it carried the tablets of the Law and Jesus came to fulfill the law
the Arc carried the rod of Aaron, Jesus is the Great High Priest
the Arc carried the manna, Jesus is the Bread Come Down From Heaven

so if someone says "Mary was not special"
ask them if the Arc was special?

the Bible CLEARLY shows that the Arc was special
and the Arc only carried shadows of what was to come
Mary carried the Lord

I think you might ask, does God force anyone to receive him? Even the story itself makes it clear that Mary gave assent to the situation - she chose not to refuse.

What kind of person, in her circumstance, says yes to something like that? It potentially could have had a pretty awful effect on her life - I am sure she was aware that God can ask people for some very difficult things. That yes meant real obedience, real faith, real self-giving.

Actually, if you follow the geneaologies in Matthew and Luke the answer is provided for us. Mary was the direct lineal descendant of King David and God, who cannot lie, had sworn that there would be a descendant of David ruling on his throne forever. One of the huge difficulties within Judaism is this eternal promise. For Christians, as explained in the book of Hebrews, the dilemma was solved by Jesus Christ who alone is God's anointed King and Lord of all creation.

Mary was chosen to be the mother of our Lord even before she was conceived in her mother's womb. With God there is no past, present, and future. What God knows and wills exists in the immediate present beyond time which is eternity. Thus God does not look into the future to decide who He will predestine to grace or glory by taking their merits into account. He simply knows when He fashions a soul what its destiny is in the order of grace and within His providence. In this way God decreed that Mary be the mother of His Only-begotten Son. It was because God infallibly knew that Mary would be the mother of our Lord that she certainly was after the angel Gabriel had visited her. Until then her Divine motherhood existed as an idea in the mind of God which presupposed Mary would be our Lord's mother through the efficacy of divine grace: "Hail, full of grace. The Lord is with you!" Thus God did not necessarily have to choose Mary among all the maidens of Judah. Nor did God have to look into the future to determine which young woman would best co-operate with His grace. He simply knew from all eternity that He would choose Mary by no initial merit of hers, and by choosing her He would already know that she would be most worthy to be the mother of the Son through His grace. If it hadn't been Mary, it could just as well have been another young woman of marriageable age. Mary had found favour with God before the angel appeared to her (cf Lk 1:30). God "looked upon the lowliness of His handmaiden" before she was ever created. God's knowledge does not determine the destiny of any soul, but infallibly confirms it. Each soul created in the image of God is free to choose their own destiny in the order of grace. Mary chose to be the mother of Jesus when she freely gave her consent. And God already knew that she would give it with the help of His grace without having to look into the future and draw comparisons with other women. He simply knew when He created her. God is not constrained by the three dimensions of time existing beyond it. He does not execute His will by asking Himself what are His options in the face of future uncertainties.

For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.
My frame was not hidden from you
when I was made in the secret place,
when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.
Your eyes saw my unformed body;
all the days ordained for me were written in your book
before one of them came to be.
How precious to me are your thoughts, God!
How vast is the sum of them!

I don't think the reply to this has anything to do with whether God could have actually chosen another. The crux of your classmate's comment is his desire to summarily dismiss Mary as blessed.

It absolutely throws me that many Protestants are so kneejerk anti-Catholic that they will embrace unBibilical positions (such as Mary was nothing special rather than that she is blessed among women) rather than give an inch toward Catholic teachings.

Seems like you missed the point. The OP was asking what about Mary DID recommend her to God. That's not to agree with the idea that she was nothing special.

If you could answer the question that person asked, it might be different. Carrying on in an antagonistic way like this probably isn't going to change many minds, though.

Unfortunately half the post had to be deleted given there were too many characters Albion.

Our Blessed Virgin Mary lived and breathed God The Most High as a young Child already chosen as God The Most High's "Favoured One" well before our Blessed Virgin Mary was born on Earth.

The Blessed Virgin Mary was taken out of public view, lived Her Life in God's Holy Will at all times, learning being educated in one of His Holy Temples and Convents at that time and all through Her Life. Similar to Nuns/Sisters being educated within Convents AD.

God The Most High in His Holy Will did not want His Favoured One liaising with the general public as a Child/Teenager nor Young Woman. The Blessed Virgin Mary was following God The Most High's Loving Holy Wisdom, Guidance, Discernment and Guidance during Her Life, obeying His Commandments, following His Teachings through Abraham and His Holy Prophets, Moses included.

This is one of the reasons that little was stated about The Blessed Virgin Mary, our Heavenly Mother, Queen of Heaven and Earth.

God did not want, in His Holy Will, exposure of His Blessed Virgin, to the outside world while our Blessed Virgin Mary was living here on earth.

When The Holy Spirit descended upon Jesus' Disciples (as Jesus had foretold them all), The Blessed Virgin Mary was Present in God's Holy Will and received The Holy Spirit with The Disciples at the same time. The Blessed Virgin Mary and Saint John looked after one another in our Blessed Virgin Mary's Home after Jesus died and ascended into Heaven. Our Blessed Virgin Mary further spread Jesus/God/The Holy Spirit's Loving Holy Word/Scriptures and Jesus' Holy messages to mankind/people around them for many years prior to being 'Assumed Body and Soul into Heaven' then receiving Her Holy Blessed Crown of Twelve Stars from God The Most High in Her Holy Coronation.

There is a great deal more to be said, however, that is not my place, it is for our Blessed Virgin Mary to inform the world, in God's Holy Will.

People are making the gravest mistake on their Soul journeys back to Jesus/God/The Holy Spirit Blaspheming The Blessed Virgin Mary our Heavenly Mother of Whom has been working through hearts/Souls around the world for Centuries, converting souls back to Her Son Jesus Christ our Saviour, encouraging people to pray Her Most Holy Rosary the greatest weapon against satan and its evil spirits, and whom is trying to deter people from praying The Most Holy Rosary to The Blessed Virgin Mary, trying to deter people from trusting in Jesus and The Blessed Virgin Mary, trying to deter people from repenting sins to Jesus in remorse, trying to deter people from receiving Jesus/God/The Holy Spirit's Blessed Holy Eucharist/Host/Flesh and Blood.

Many souls saved in past generations of whom have prayed to Jesus and The Blessed Virgin Mary because this allows Jesus and The Blessed Virgin Mary to lead souls back into the Abyss of Jesus' Divine Mercy - His Mercy - not facing God's wrath in His just judgement. And this is happening as we post, as we go about our work and every day activities. Souls of whom have not turned to Jesus and/or The Blessed Virgin Mary nor any intercessory Saints, face God's wrath with little Mercy or no Mercy at all in His strict punishment and hurt that people did not turn to His Son Jesus after He suffered the worst Pain, Agonies, Sorrows, Tortures, Humiliations with 5,475 Blows to His Body prior to carrying His Cross and prior to the blunt nails being driven into His Flesh.

And our Blessed Virgin Mary in Her Loving Presence, for Jesus/God/The Holy Spirit, Her Son, every step of Jesus' Sorrowful Stations of His Cross, at the time of His Crucifixion, dying on His Cross (our Lady of Sorrows), and when Jesus was taken down from His Cross (then taken away by two friends of Jesus Christ our Saviour's to be wrapped and anointed).

Love, Respect and Trust in God The Most High in our Hearts received, through and by God and The Holy Spirit, will never have any person doubt the Most Holy Role of our Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God in Heaven and as our Loving Holy Intercessory

Love and kindest wishes your Sister in Jesus Christ our Saviour.

This is what is sometimes called a "pious opinion." Most of this is just a charming story, as these details about her early life are actually unknown.

Here is a little article that may be of interest on our Blessed Virgin Mary - our Heavenly Mother working in our lives by God The Most High and many of us at times quite oblivious.

The Entry of the Most Holy Mother of God into the Temple

Commemorated on November 21 Troparion

According to Holy Tradition, the Entry of the Most Holy Theotokos into the Temple took place in the following manner. The parents of the Virgin Mary, Sts Joachim and Anna, praying for an end to their childlessness, vowed that if a child were born to them, they would dedicate it to the service of God.

When the Most Holy Virgin reached the age of three, the holy parents decided to fulfill their vow. They gathered together their relatives and acquaintances, and dressed the All-Pure Virgin in Her finest clothes. Singing sacred songs and with lighted candles in their hands, virgins escorted Her to the Temple (Ps. 44/45:14-15). There the High Priest and several priests met the handmaiden of God. In the Temple, fifteen high steps led to the sanctuary, which only the priests and High Priest could enter. (Because they recited a Psalm on each step, Psalms 119/120-133/134 are called “Psalms of Ascent.”) The child Mary, so it seemed, could not make it up this stairway. But just as they placed Her on the first step, strengthened by the power of God, She quickly went up the remaining steps and ascended to the highest one. Then the High Priest, through inspiration from above, led the Most Holy Virgin into the Holy of Holies, where only the High Priest entered once a year to offer a purifying sacrifice of blood. Therefore, all those present in the Temple were astonished at this most unusual occurrence.

After entrusting their child to the Heavenly Father, Joachim and Anna returned home. The All-Holy Virgin remained in the quarters for virgins near the Temple. According to the testimony of Holy Scripture (Exodus 38; 1 Kings 1: 28; Luke 2: 37), and also the historian Josephus Flavius, there were many living quarters around the Temple, in which those who were dedicated to the service of God dwelt.

There are accounts in Church Tradition, that during the All-Pure Virgin’s stay at the Temple, She grew up in a community of pious virgins, diligently read the Holy Scripture, occupied Herself with handicrafts, prayed constantly, and grew in love for God. From ancient times, the Church has celebrated the Feast of the Entry of the Most Holy Theotokos into the Temple. Indications that the Feast was observed in the first centuries of Christianity are found in the traditions of Palestinian Christians, which say that the holy Empress Helen (May 21) built a church in honor of the Entry of the Most Holy Theotokos into the Temple.

St Gregory of Nyssa, in the fourth century, also mentions this Feast. In the eighth century Sts Germanus and Tarasius, Patriarchs of Constantinople, delivered sermons on the Feast of the Entry.

The Feast of the Entry of the Most Holy Theotokos into the Temple foretells God’s blessing for the human race, the preaching of salvation, the promise of the coming of Christ.

DISCOURSE ON THE FEAST OF THE ENTRY

OF OUR MOST PURE LADY THEOTOKOS

INTO THE HOLY OF HOLIES

by Saint Gregory Palamas, Archbishop of Thessalonica

If a tree is known by its fruit, and a good tree bears good fruit (Mt. 7:17; Luke 6:44), then is not the Mother of Goodness Itself, She who bore the Eternal Beauty, incomparably more excellent than every good, whether in this world or the world above? Therefore, the coeternal and identical Image of goodness, Preeternal, transcending all being, He Who is the preexisting and good Word of the Father, moved by His unutterable love for mankind and compassion for us, put on our image, that He might reclaim for Himself our nature which had been dragged down to uttermost Hades, so as to renew this corrupted nature and raise it to the heights of Heaven. For this purpose, He had to assume a flesh that was both new and ours, that He might refashion us from out of ourselves. Now He finds a Handmaiden perfectly suited to these needs, the supplier of Her own unsullied nature, the Ever-Virgin now hymned by us, and Whose miraculous Entrance into the Temple, into the Holy of Holies, we now celebrate. God predestined Her before the ages for the salvation and reclaiming of our kind. She was chosen, not just from the crowd, but from the ranks of the chosen of all ages, renowned for piety and understanding, and for their God-pleasing words and deeds.

In the beginning, there was one who rose up against us: the author of evil, the serpent, who dragged us into the abyss. Many reasons impelled him to rise up against us, and there are many ways by which he enslaved our nature: envy, rivalry, hatred, injustice, treachery, slyness, etc. In addition to all this, he also has within him the power of bringing death, which he himself engendered, being the first to fall away from true life.

If Adam had been sufficiently strong to keep the divine commandment, then he would have shown himself the vanquisher of his enemy, and withstood his deathly attack. But since he voluntarily gave in to sin, he was defeated and was made a sinner. Since he is the root of our race, he has produced us as death-bearing shoots. So, it was necessary for us, if he were to fight back against his defeat and to claim victory, to rid himself of the death-bearing venomous poison in his soul and body, and to absorb life, eternal and indestructible life.

It was necessary for us to have a new root for our race, a new Adam, not just one Who would be sinless and invincible, but one Who also would be able to forgive sins and set free from punishment those subject to it. And not only would He have life in Himself, but also the capacity to restore to life, so that He could grant to those who cleave to Him and are related to Him by race both life and the forgiveness of their sins, restoring to life not only those who came after Him, but also those who already had died before Him. Therefore, St Paul, that great trumpet of the Holy Spirit, exclaims, “the first man Adam was made a living soul, the last Adam was made a quickening spirit” (1 Cor. 15:45).

Except for God, there is no one who is without sin, or life-creating, or able to remit sin. Therefore, the new Adam must be not only Man, but also God. He is at the same time life, wisdom, truth, love, and mercy, and every other good thing, so that He might renew the old Adam and restore him to life through mercy, wisdom and righteousness. These are the opposites of the things which the author of evil used to bring about our aging and death.

As the slayer of mankind raised himself against us with envy and hatred, so the Source of life was lifted up [on the Cross] because of His immeasurable goodness and love for mankind. He intensely desired the salvation of His creature, i.e., that His creature would be restored by Himself. In contrast to this, the author of evil wanted to bring God’s creature to ruin, and thereby put mankind under his own power, and tyrannically to afflict us. And just as he achieved the conquest and the fall of mankind by means of injustice and cunning, by deceit and his trickery, so has the Liberator brought about the defeat of the author of evil, and the restoration of His own creature with truth, justice and wisdom.

It was a deed of perfect justice that our nature, which was voluntarily enslaved and struck down, should again enter the struggle for victory and cast off its voluntary enslavement. Therefore, God deigned to receive our nature from us, hypostatically uniting with it in a marvelous way. But it was impossible to unite that Most High Nature, Whose purity is incomprehensible for human reason, to a sinful nature before it had been purified. Therefore, for the conception and birth of the Bestower of purity, a perfectly spotless and Most Pure Virgin was required.

God is born of the spotless and Holy Virgin, or better to say, of the Most Pure and All-Holy Virgin. She is above every fleshly defilement, and even above every impure thought. Her conceiving resulted not from fleshly lust, but by the overshadowing of the Most Holy Spirit. Such desire being utterly alien to Her, it is through prayer and spiritual readiness that She declared to the angel: “Behold the handmaiden of the Lord; be it unto Me according to thy word” (Luke 1:38), and that She conceived and gave birth. So, in order to render the Virgin worthy of this sublime purpose, God marked this ever-virgin Daughter now praised by us, from before the ages, and from eternity, choosing Her from out of His elect.

Turn your attention then, to where this choice began. From the sons of Adam God chose the wondrous Seth, who showed himself a living heaven through his becoming behavior, and through the beauty of his virtues. That is why he was chosen, and from whom the Virgin would blossom as the divinely fitting chariot of God. She was needed to give birth and to summon the earth-born to heavenly sonship. For this reason also all the lineage of Seth were called “sons of God,” because from this lineage a son of man would be born the Son of God. The name Seth signifies a rising or resurrection, or more specifically, it signifies the Lord, Who promises and gives immortal life to all who believe in Him.

And how precisely exact is this parallel! Seth was born of Eve, as she herself said, in place of Abel, whom Cain killed through jealousy (Gen. 4:25); and Christ, the Son of the Virgin, was born for us in place of Adam, whom the author of evil also killed through jealousy. But Seth did not resurrect Abel, since he was only a type of the resurrection. But our Lord Jesus Christ resurrected Adam, since He is the very Life and the Resurrection of the earth-born, for whose sake the descendents of Seth are granted divine adoption through hope, and are called the children of God. It was because of this hope that they were called sons of God, as is evident from the one who was first called so, the successor in the choice. This was Enos, the son of Seth, who as Moses wrote, first hoped to call on the Name of the Lord (Gen. 4:26).

In this manner, the choice of the future Mother of God, beginning with the very sons of Adam and proceeding through all the generations of time, through the Providence of God, passes to the Prophet-king David and the successors of his kingdom and lineage. When the chosen time had come, then from the house and posterity of David, Joachim and Anna are chosen by God. Though they were childless, they were by their virtuous life and good disposition the finest of all those descended from the line of David. And when in prayer they besought God to deliver them from their childlessness, and promised to dedicate their child to God from its infancy. By God Himself, the Mother of God was proclaimed and given to them as a child, so that from such virtuous parents the all-virtuous child would be raised. So in this manner, chastity joined with prayer came to fruition by producing the Mother of virginity, giving birth in the flesh to Him Who was born of God the Father before the ages.

Now, when Righteous Joachim and Anna saw that they had been granted their wish, and that the divine promise to them was realized in fact, then they on their part, as true lovers of God, hastened to fulfill their vow given to God as soon as the child had been weaned from milk. They have now led this truly sanctified child of God, now the Mother of God, this Virgin into the Temple of God. And She, being filled with Divine gifts even at such a tender age, ... She, rather than others, determined what was being done over Her. In Her manner She showed that She was not so much presented into the Temple, but that She Herself entered into the service of God of her own accord, as if she had wings, striving towards this sacred and divine love. She considered it desirable and fitting that she should enter into the Temple and dwell in the Holy of Holies.

Therefore, the High Priest, seeing that this child, more than anyone else, had divine grace within Her, wished to set Her within the Holy of Holies. He convinced everyone present to welcome this, since God had advanced it and approved it. Through His angel, God assisted the Virgin and sent Her mystical food, with which She was strengthened in nature, while in body She was brought to maturity and was made purer and more exalted than the angels, having the Heavenly spirits as servants. She was led into the Holy of Holies not just once, but was accepted by God to dwell there with Him during Her youth, so that through Her, the Heavenly Abodes might be opened and given for an eternal habitation to those who believe in Her miraculous birthgiving.

So it is, and this is why She, from the beginning of time, was chosen from among the chosen. She Who is manifest as the Holy of Holies, Who has a body even purer than the spirits purified by virtue, is capable of receiving ... the Hypostatic Word of the Unoriginate Father. Today the Ever-Virgin Mary, like a Treasure of God, is stored in the Holy of Holies, so that in due time, (as it later came to pass) She would serve for the enrichment of, and an ornament for, all the world. Therefore, Christ God also glorifies His Mother, both before, and also after His birth.

We who understand the salvation begun for our sake through the Most Holy Virgin, give Her thanks and praise according to our ability. And truly, if the grateful woman (of whom the Gospel tells us), after hearing the saving words of the Lord, blessed and thanked His Mother, raising her voice above the din of the crowd and saying to Christ, “Blessed is the womb that bore Thee, and the paps Thou hast sucked” (Luke 11:27), then we who have the words of eternal life written out for us, and not only the words, but also the miracles and the Passion, and the raising of our nature from death, and its ascent from earth to Heaven, and the promise of immortal life and unfailing salvation, then how shall we not unceasingly hymn and bless the Mother of the Author of our Salvation and the Giver of Life, celebrating Her conception and birth, and now Her Entry into the Holy of Holies?

Therefore, in such manner our songs and prayers to Her will gain entry, and thus through her mediation, we shall be heirs of the everlasting blessings to come, through the grace and love for mankind of Him Who was born of Her for our sake, our Lord Jesus Christ, to Whom be glory, honor and worship, together with His Unoriginate Father and His Coeternal and Life-Creating Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Mary has a single circumstantial quality - and it lays in her lineage and to whom she was betrothed . Joseph !...both of the tribe of Judah and he of the line of David ..
IF some other lady named Jane or sue was of the tribe of Judah and got betrothed to Joseph.. then it would have been Jane or sue chosen .

outside of this she has absolutely no attribute to differentiate her from any other human being born of the line of Adam - she was just one of us .
in no way sinless, in no way divine . and no more then a surrogate mother .
albeit, blessed to be so by grace .. but not attribute .
Claims of sinlessness or divinity are contrived , delusional and enforced only by those who insist on giver her "worth " above her station .to give a thing "worth" above its station is to worship it . to give that which is created by God worth and cal it the mother of god is to elevate it above God for we all know a son is subject to a mother (a stance the lord Jesus rejected when he said "woman what have i to do with you ) thus the term mother of God is elevation of that which is created ,over the creator , is the highest form of idolatry and the title mother of God is blasphemy of the highest order .

There are other Interviews prior to Sister Lucia dying and from the other Fatima Children.

God The Most High our Heavenly Father has given mankind His Blessed Virgin Mary as the last means of Salvation.

Love and kindest wishes your Sister in Jesus Christ our Saviour

there is no other name given by which mankind may be saved ... but the lord JESUS .. to say Mary is a means of salvation is to directly call God a liar.
for he ha stated .. no one comes to the father but by me .
and no one means no one .

im not totally sure about the rules in this forum .. but i don't think the rules anywhere should allow the promotion of doctrine which blatantly contradicts the direct unambiguous words of the Lord Jesus himself .

now instead of being all judgmental you could have said something like this

"wow, that sounds VERY questionable and dangerous, what do you mean by these statements. I have to be honest with you, they sound very over the top"

but nope, you did not ask us what we meant, you just condemned us
accuse us of calling God a liar

yup .. no ambiguity with me . what the lord Jesus has stated- he has stated .

to impose what men have contrived as authoritative over or replacing what the Lord Jesus has said .. is to declare him as liar .

He is LORD . not us not you not me not rome .His word is final .

Open your Heart and receive Jesus then you will know in your Heart as opposed to your mind, that The Blessed Virgin Mary is Queen of Heaven, Queen of Mercy, Queen of the Universe and Queen over the Earth, Queen and Mother to Her Catholic Religious and Children.

It is through our Blessed Virgin Mary that mankind over the Centuries have received God The Most High's Blessings, Gifts and Graces through Her Loving Holy Intercession whether one be aware of this fact or not.

Those of whom have 'received' Jesus Christ our Saviour have 'received' in their hearts The Blessed Virgin Mary, our Heavenly Mother of Whom is our Loving Holy Intercessory to Jesus, God The Most High and The Holy Spirit, God our Almighty Holy 'ONE' and it is through The Hail Mary's prayed and of course The Most Holy Rosary

THE SECRET OF THE ROSARY

THE MAGNIFICAT

The Magnificat, taken from Luke’s Gospel (1:46-55), is the Blessed Virgin Mary’s hymn of praise to the Lord. It is also known as the Canticle of Mary in the Liturgy of the Hours, a special collection of scripture readings, psalms, and hymns that constitute what is known as the prayer of the church. (Priests and other religious are required to pray sections from the Liturgy of the Hours each day.)

My soul magnifies the Lord
And my spirit rejoices in God my Savior;
Because He has regarded the lowliness of His handmaid;
For behold, henceforth all generations shall call me blessed;
Because He who is mighty has done great things for me,
and holy is His name;
And His mercy is from generation to generation
on those who fear Him.
He has shown might with His arm,
He has scattered the proud in the conceit of their heart.
He has put down the mighty from their thrones,
and has exalted the lowly.
He has filled the hungry with good things,
and the rich He has sent away empty.
He has given help to Israel, his servant, mindful of His mercy
Even as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his posterity forever.

Within my relationship with Jesus, God The Most High and The Holy Spirit, God my Heavenly Father LOVES hearing people pray The Blessed Virgin Mary's Holy Magnificat to Him. I try and pray The Blessed Virgin Mary's Holy Magnificat to God The Most High x thrice daily from my "Heart" not just mind. And God's Love and Peace flows through my Heart with God being SO Happy!

The Magnificat provides great material for meditation on the Visitation, the second Joyful Mystery of the Rosary, pictured above. When the angel Gabriel informs Mary that she is to be the Mother of God, he also tells her of her relative Elizabeth’s pregnancy with John the Baptist.

After Mary gives her famous consent to becoming the Mother of God, -- “Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it done to me according to thy word” (Luke 1:38) -- she goes “with haste” (1:39) to help Elizabeth, who is delighted to see her. Our Lady then expresses her joy in the Magnificat.

Clearly Mary, in hastening to help her cousin, is focused on service to others. In this way she glorifies the Lord in reflecting (and “magnifying”) His goodness and love. And, of course by becoming the Mother of God she will help Him redeem us for our salvation in His Passion!

Speaking of magnifying, Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen once referred to our Blessed Mother as being like “a magnifying glass that intensifies our love of her Son.”

Note that Mary’s joyful claim that “all generations shall call me blessed” in no way takes away from her humility. If she seems to boast here, it is much as St. Paul does later on in scripture when he says “whoever boasts, should boast in the Lord” (2 Cor 10:17), that is to say, in God’s work being done through us.

In this regard, the Magnificat is more than a prayer of praise. It also reminds us about the essential link between humility and holiness. Just as God has “regarded the lowliness of his handmaid” and “has done great things” for Mary in making her the Mother of his Son, so too “he has put down the mighty from their thrones (with his own might!) and has exalted the lowly.”

Note also our Blessed Mother’s humility in referring to Herself in this prayer, as she does in giving her consent to Gabriel mentioned earlier, as the Lord’s Handmaid, His servant!

As Her Divine Son later stressed “Whoever exalts himself shall be humbled, and whoever humbles himself shall be exalted” (Matt 23:12, also in slightly different words in Luke 18:14 and Luke 14:11).

Jesus wasn’t saying anything new here, either! We read similar thoughts in throughout the Old Testament such as in the Psalms and in this example from the book of Sirach “Humble yourself the more, the greater you are, and you will find favor with God.” (Sirach 3:19)

The line about God filling “the hungry with good things” resonates later in the Gospels as well, when our Lord says “Blessed are they who hunger and thirst after righteousness for they will be filled” (Matt 5:7). This serves as a good reminder for us to “stay hungry” for God’s graces in praying and in reading His word in scripture.

And as for the rich being sent away empty? This line refers to those who live for wealth and power and feel they have everything figured out. These people in, effect wish to be Gods rather than God’s. How can our Lord fill those who are already full--of themselves?

How about you? Does your soul magnify the Lord? We may never be able to approach Him from Mary’s level of sanctity as the Mother of God. Still, we are all called to be saints nonetheless.

Your good example, like our Blessed Mother’s, can help others in their spiritual growth. Do people see Christ’s love and goodness in you? Are you letting God work within you to accomplish His will? Let Mary help give you the graces you need to follow her Son and His Church in praying the Magnificat.

As St. Ambrose once said in referring to this wonderful prayer, "Let Mary's soul be in us to glorify the Lord; let her spirit be in us that we may rejoice in God our Saviour."

I advise you to read The Blessed Virgin Mary's Holy Magnificat to God The Most High in Her Love and relationship with God The Most High. The Blessed Virgin Mary is 'the' Holy Favoured Daughter of God our Heavenly Father and one would be doing their Soul a favour eternally by not Blaspheming The Blessed Virgin Mary as it is our Heavenly Mother Mary of Whom is our Holy Intercessory to receiving Jesus into our hearts whether aware or oblivious to the fact.

Blasphemy against The Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, i can tell you, is not tolerated with God The Most High of Whom has bellowed in His wrath at times about the degradation of our Blessed Virgin Mary and Her most Holy role in Heaven.

We Love Thee, we adore Thee, we Respect Thee, we Praise Thee Most Holy Mother Mary our Holy Theotokas, our Holy Mother of Sorrows, our Holy Mother of all Nations and all peoples.

Thank You God my Heavenly Father for Thy Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, for creating and choosing Thy Most Holy Favoured One. We Love Thee, we exalt Thee, we Thank Thee and we Praise Thee our God on High now and for eternity. Amen.

Happy Holy Mother's Day my Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God from all of Thy Childrens Hearts and myself.
