There was a book (by JB Philips, I think) called Your God Is Too Small. It talked about the way everyone has a different image of what God is like in their heads, even though they're probably aware intellectually that it's only an image. It affects the way they see God, often unconsciously. If taken too seriously or too literally, it becomes a kind of idol in itself.
A God who needs a big universe to show how grand he is seems to me to be one of those images. God is the ground of all being: the uncaused cause of all that exists. Why would God need a big universe to show how big he is?
