Why is religion such a hot button topic? Why is one's belief in God considered personal to some but not to others? Is it a personal and private matter to any of you? Is it something that goes against God's Word as far as sharing our faith publicly or no? Should expressing our religion be just a private thing between the believer and the Lord in your humble opinion or not?

The god of this world (the devil) hates the One True Creator and Jesus and the born again ones, children of Yahweh.

Yahweh did not take away free will - the right to choose to sin and to be wrong and to do wrong.

    See previous post (Scripture there).

Most of the world's population goes against God's Word every day.

Opinions won't change Scripture. See Scripture in previous post.

You do know what holy wars and "wars of religion" are, right? One of the bloodiest wars prior to WWI was fought between Protestants and Catholics and it lasted a long, long time.

Religion can touch off nerves because very little is more personal.

The political elections are not of Yahweh. Oh, He directs the hearts and lives and steps even of kings,
but He punished His people in Scripture for choosing a king/ the way of the gentile nations,
and many , many multitudes have suffered greatly for trusting man's government instead of trusting Yahweh.

"reaching voters" ...... as in for votes ? Yahweh never said to decide anything that way. It (doing things man's way) led to abortion, war, oppression, malpractice (widespread and worse every year) , poor education , etc etc etc

First of all, Christianity is personal belief in Jesus as Savior. It is not "religion." Secondly, we are called to be Jesus' witnesses. Each person's witness will be examined at the JSoC.

I doubt I'd do the cause much good if I ran around telling everyone I'm a Christian what with being the most fallen of the fallen and lower than straw in the street and all that.

I wouldn't deny it if asked but it has certain connotations so I suppose I'd have to be one of those ''I'm a Christian but not the type that....................'' sorts of Christians. Nobody ever asks me; Dutch people would never voluntarily open up a can of worms like that :D
They sure as Shirley want to know about my previous relationships though

It is because religion deals with ultimate values. They relate to all of us, no matter where we fall on the spectrum of belief. This is obviously different from something that centers on sport or fashion or similar pursuits.

You really should read your Bible brother and not make such contentiously false statements... there is a true "religion" that involves humility, repentance and the fruits of the Spirit.

    James 1:27
Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.

Yes, I wonder where that notion about religion being incompatible with a community of believers came from in the first place? It certainly has impressed a lot of people by sounding wise even though it means nothing. I say impressed, but it seems mainly to function as a cover for people who do not want to go to church.

Religion requires us to do that which is anathema today, that is to throw away our personal beliefs in favor of a corporate belief system. The extreme individualism that is so prevalent today (especially in the US) considers this subsuming of self to a larger system to be the ultimate evil. Interestingly, Satan approached Eve when she was alone to insert the worm of untruth into the apple. So in this sense, religion is the opposite of personal belief. This is what marks our age as so different from previous ages, where the battle was not about corporate belief versus individual belief; but about what that corporate belief should include.

It is my theory that religion is a hot button topic, because Christianity has shattered into a million individual belief systems and any effort to tell someone about your own comes across as trying to say that your system is better than theirs. That has become the unpardonable sin in today's society, trying to actually change someone's beliefs.

Religion is the incorporation of required ceremonies, formulae, procedures, obligations, rituals, policies, systems, created lines of authority outside of THE creation / Creator, and so on. Fractured Christianity has shattered into a million belief systems known as denominations and/or cults. Authentic Christianity remains as Faith, Hope and Trust in our Savior and nothing else. There is NO structure in authentic Christianity.

We argue because we care about the subject. The more we care about it, the more particular we become, the more prone to debate we are.

You got that backward. Christianity shattered because it was a hot button topic. It's easy to keep a global religion together when people don't care enough about it to form their own opinions. Yeah, whatever...whatever the priest says is fine by me.

Sad for humanity /mankind/ though - so many people "care about the subject"
    but never know the truth.
The more they care about it, the more resistant to the truth they become - that's all mankind in general , and the way human work (badly, sinfully).

The Scripture tells quite about about true wisdom, and it's not found by debate, nor determined by the crowd, nor even accomplished by study, no,
it begins with quiet seeking Yahweh, and turning to Him, and learning from the Good Shepherd Jesus.

Thank God for the Reformation... sad that today's Protestants don't even know the history of who or what they were protesting against.
